Subject matter, depth and breadth are just right. I work in both Perl and Prolog. Author's command of English is not perfect, but tolerable.

This book has the same scope as Speech and Language Processing (2nd Edition) (Prentice Hall Series in Artificial Intelligence), but that book flies too high over the details. This book does a good job of covering the details without getting lost in them. The author takes the approach of explaining a concept first with excellent illustrations, then explains the algorithm that implements the concept, then shows detailed code in either Prolog or PERL.This is not to say you can pick up this book without the proper background and get much out of it. Language processing is a field requiring a good background in a number of fields including the theory of computation, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and information theory to name a few. You should be familiar with all of these fields before tackling the book, although the author does introduce these topics somewhat before digging into details. One thing the author does not do much of is explain Prolog or PERL. He assumes you already know these languages, although there is an appendix at the back of the book covering Prolog. Prolog is a difficult language to learn and is not at all intuitive. However, it is an excellent choice for coding up many algorithms concerning artificial intelligence. Thus, although I do not argue with the author's choice of language, I do recommend that you become fluent in Prolog before you read this book.I used to recommend Jurafsky and Martin for people starting out learning language processing, but now I think I can recommend this book for not only the big picture but the details of this interesting field as well.

This is a wonderful, code rich, book on language processing for computational linguists and language engineers. It is both theory and example rich with considerable detail throughout. The book is clearly written and very well structured!!Highly recommended!

One more reason to like Frank Netter's imaging skill. I was a little surprised at how many detailed images of dysfunctional and pathological embryo and fetal stages were included, but found the overall layout and well sorted progression to be a good follow.

the excellent atlas of human embryology, the best illustrations explaining in detail the developmental stages in many aspects basing on the deep knowledge of the matter and realistic underground of art

very good book on clinical integrationgood illustrationsusing txt 2 speech, the speaker stops when it meets an illustration.

Excellent images! Very useful for the med student. I used it to all the embryology course and student consult access is ideal to prepair presentations.

This book makes embryology enjoyable. Great images from Netter, as usual, and simple explanations. Can go into as much detail as needed. Clinically relavent material also provided.

This was a gift so I can't judge it.

Many more pictures than commonly available in other Embryo books, which is really why anyone buys a Netter's....

This is a new and welcome addition to the Netter family of publications. IMHO, the real utility of Netter publications lies in the rendition of the plates. As an embryological atlas, this volume leaves somethings to be desired. Aside from this caveat, the images are a wonderful addition to the littany of "standard" figures that are ususally the same figure repeated with minor variations. The use of color is of particular value in understanding the development of structures where boundaries between transient elements is indistinct. These make a nice adjunct to the more conventional texts. This is a teaching book that will be of greatest use to those who have already grasped the basic elements of human embryology. They illustrate conceptually complex topics and are thus of real utility. I don't see this as a primary text, since it contains a great deal of anatomical, pathological and teratological images as well.

The Massacre at El Mozote, by Mark Danner

From Publishers Weekly

Based in large part on his extensive account published in the December 6, 1993, issue of the New Yorker , National Magazine Award winner Danner's engrossing study reconstructs events that took place some dozen years before. In December 1981, over 750 men, women and children were killed in El Mozote, El Salvador, and the surrounding hamlets. Although at the time it was covered on the front pages of both the New York Times and the Washington Post , the reports were not enough to derail Ronald Reagan's push to prove that the El Salvadoran government was "making a concerted and significant effort to comply with internationally recognized human rights." Why the government chose to ignore stories in the nation's two leading newspapers is one part of Danner's sad, well-researched book. The other is why El Mozote was attacked at all. Populated by evangelical Christians who, unlike Catholic neighbors fed on liberation theology, did not abet the rebel FMLN, the people of El Mozote believed they would be spared when the army decided to wipe out insurgents and their supporters. After several days of brutal rapes and murders, a handful of people managed to escape to the rebels, setting in motion press reports and the under-investigated, coyly couched American embassy reply that allowed the U.S. to continue its massive subsidies. Danner has disinterred an event that is an equal indictment of Salvadoran brutality and American blindness. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

In October 1992, the international community was shocked to hear of the recovery from shallow graves of 25 bodies, all but two of them children, near the ruined church of Santa Catarina in the village of El Mozote, El Salvador. Shortly thereafter, another 100 corpses were discovered elsewhere in the village. After 11 years of investigation, political pressure, and intense lobbying efforts by human rights groups, civil libertarians, and concerned individuals, the truth of what really happened in 1981 in this remote Salvadoran village finally began to emerge, a flashback to the infamous My Lai massacre of the Vietnam War. The situation in El Mozote was similar: villagers caught in the political crossfire between rival groups during a brutal war, trying to remain on friendly terms with their own soldiers while fearing to alienate the opposition. Danner's well-written account, which first appeared in The New Yorker and has been expanded here, does a good job of presenting evidence based on eyewitness accounts and reveals the callousness of U.S. Central American policy (the killers were American-trained soldiers of the Salvadoran Army). Especially recommended for Latin American collections.Philip Y. Blue, Dowling Coll. Lib., Oakdale, N.Y.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Mark Danner provides a well-researched, dispassionate yet sympathetic account of the events surrounding the massacre at El Mozote. To his credit, his narrative doesn't flinch or turn away. There are no "unspeakable" horrors: each one is exhumed in detail. While the massacre itself is painted in steady, measured prose, there's no moralizing. He lets the events and survivors speak for themselves and leaves judgment to the reader. This neutral approach extends to the rest of the book. As he weaves together the story of the aftermath, the relevant actors speak for themselves in direct quotes and interviews. The reporting on the incident, both in the press and though government channels, illustrates the pervasive influence of systemic bias. While the El Salvadorian military and government actively covered-up the incident, the U.S. reporting was refracted as it passed through iterative filters of government bureaucracy and editorial news desks. Again, the author focuses on the what, why, and how; he seems genuinely disinterested in casting blame. The final half of the book consists of documentary evidence - the congressional testimony and the like - that supports the narrative. Beyond the book itself, I was reminded of the chapter in "Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media" on the press treatment of the rape and murder of the four U.S. churchwomen some months before the massacre.I read Tom Long's new (as of 2017) book, "Latin America Confronts the United States: Asymmetry and Influence" a few days before reading "The Massacre at El Mozote". Dr. Long's central thesis - that Latin American governments exercise significant but generally underappreciated influence on the U.S. in their bilateral and multilateral relations - kept ringing in my head as I read this book. The El Salvadorian government maneuvered to achieve its political and military objectives by playing to U.S. fears and concerns. So, I had to chuckle as I read the acknowledgments in this book, published some 24 years ago: "Thanks also to my colleague Thomas Long, who provided tireless assistance during my reporting in El Salvador".Finally, as someone who works with foreign militaries and the apparatus of the U.S. government, this book helped viscerally demonstrate the "why" behind the Leahy Vetting process, as tedious, glacial and extensive as its requirements can sometimes be for those at the action officer level. Leahy Vetting refers to a law requiring all foreign military units and individuals who might receive any training, awards, etc., from the U.S. Department of State or Department of Defense to be vetted for human rights abuses before said training, etc., can be move forward. On the whole, I highly recommend this book, difficult though it is to read.

When I was a college student, I majored in Latin American Studies, and many of my classes explored the functions of the military in various Central American countries. In my junior year, I joined up with a bus full of strangers from Austin, and we headed to Georgia for an annual protest designed to force the closure of the School of the Americas (later renamed the Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation). We gathered early one morning with hundreds of like-minded activists, and we carried small wooden crosses with the names of individuals (all civilians, as far as I know) who had been killed by soldiers trained at this institution. My cross was for Maria Dolores Amaya Claros, Age 5, killed at El Mozote, but I didn't really know many more details about her or what happened at El Mozote. In the ten years or so since the protest, I have become more moderate in my political views, but every so often, I have thought about that little girl and wondered about the details of what happened to her. I finally decided to buy this book, and I am thankful that I did.Danner writes his account in a journalistic style, giving the reader not just a graphic and nauseating play-by-play of a small group of Salvadoran soldiers storming into a town full of civilians and murdering hundreds of them in gruesome ways, but also a historical context of why the atrocity took place. Danner delves into the ongoing war between the military and the Communist guerrillas, and he highlights the complicated impact of the rumors and facts of the event on the new Reagan Administration in their Cold War efforts. Perhaps the most striking benefit of the book, though, is that the story is quite short - maybe 170 pages, minus full-page photos along the way - but it comes packaged with copies of actual communications and editorials and other documents, including a multi-page list of the hundreds of named victims of this military operation. Although the massacre at El Mozote occurred about thirty years ago, and the book itself is nearly twenty years old, I still highly recommend this book for readers today who are interested in the way that U.S. foreign policy has responded to human rights violations during times of war.

In December 1981 the army of El Salvador rounded up over 750 men, women and children who happened to be Evangelical Christians, herded them into a church in the hamlet of El Mozote in remote Morazan Province and killed them all. Why? They were not members of the FMNL who were fighting against them or proponents of Catholic liberation theology. They were apparently killed for no reason except that the army which was trained by its American advisers was totally out of control. The US embassy tried to cover it up, but Mark Danner got the chilling story which was first published in The New Yorker Magazine in 1993, a year after the war ended. This was a massacre in a war that we paid for, but it was covered up by our government. The next time our government wants to start another war, what will your response be? Think about it. Why do we fight? Remember, war is a profitable enterprise for many large American corporations who also own many members of the US Congress.

This is a required text for my Modern Latin America course. I find the writing concise and quite readable, which is refreshing in something being used as a history text. I will say that it is quite graphic in its descriptions (as to be expected) but also in its photographic inclusions, so if that is upsetting to you you may want to give it a pass. I appreciate the attention Danner pays to how incredibly easy it was for officials in America to suppress the news reports of the massacre, not as any kind of ill will or theatrical villainy but just out of a 'well someone else can worry about it' sense of self preservation.

I Want My MTV is compulsively entertaining, hugely edifying, and occasionally profound.” -TIME“Hilarious. One of my favorite books of the year. I guarantee you’ll have a tough time putting it down.” -USA Today“This is my kind of book.” -Howard Stern“This colorful oral history of MTV’s early years doesn’t pull punches or waste time. A relentlessly entertaining book, an endlessly quotable volume.” -The Onion“Wildly entertaining. Music and culture fans of a certain age – you will want this book.” -Washington Post“Marks and Tannenbaum make business meetings sound as fascinating as UFC Fighting, with anecdote upon anecdote about models, midgets, and coke-fueled mayhem.” -Spin Magazine

To me the heyday of MTV was when it played videos around the clock, and this book is chock full of behind the scenes info of many singers who were hot and happening then (and in some cases even still very popular now) like Madonna, Heart, Robert Palmer, A-Ha, Michael Jackson, and many more. If you love the 80's or you want to know about what MTV was like back in the day or you just like reading entertaining books...get this book. As someone who was an 80's child, I can tell you that this book was well worth the money. The pages flew by, and I wouldn't hesitate to read this again some day.

I've seen others online mention that "I Want My MTV" is more a history of the music video than the story of MTV itself. That's a fair assessment as there are long stretches of the book where the discussion is entirely focused on the music videos and artists themselves with any connection to MTV being tangential at best.Having said that, this book is FANTASTIC. There are so many great stories in here that the book is really hard to put down. If you're a child of the music video era like I am, this is a must-read. My family got MTV very early in 1982 and for a few years after, it served as a de facto radio station for our house. It was pretty much always on. So this book and the videos discussed really connected with me.It's worth noting, as others have, that a lot of the stories deal with sex and drugs and have a very tabloid-y feel. Given the "Uncensored" part of the title and the general subject (rock & roll), that should not surprise you. Occasionally it feels like the author dove a little too deep into that type of story but it never really goes overboard.Bottom line: Buy the book, you won't be sorry.

This book covers MTV from the beginning to the end of the era of music videos roughly around 1994. I enjoyed reading all the inside information. I watched the 1st video live and saw the network grow over the years.I am one of those that miss the music videos on MTV. The book explores the transition to reality programming (Real World). Well written and immersive.Highly recommended.

This book can appeal to baby boomers as well as the intelligent youth who want to learn abut the history giant that was/is MTV. It is a fascinating look behind the curtains about the origins of MTV and music videos. Some of us remember when MTV was truly Music Video Television. We loved our music. It was exciting to see the bands without going to a concert. Fans got an insight into bands, Singers and the images they projected. The book is put together in a format that allows the reader to pick up and put down at any time without losing the story. Hence, it is easy for a non-reader to enjoy this book. At the end, older readers who watched MTV will be saddened about its demise as a source of music entertainment.

My favorite memory of family vacations was being glued to MTV, as my parents were too cheap to buy cable. if you have a similar MTV-related memory, you are guaranteed to be glued to this book.It reads like "Live from New York" and "The War for Late Night" and is equally addictive. It focuses purely on MTV's 1981-1993 music video era. A looong read, yet my only beef is that I didn't want it to end.Wish there were more said on Beavis & Butthead, MTV rivals like The Box, MTV2, and post 1993 MTV - but this still qualifies as the definitive MTV guide. Get it, you'll love it. Skip a couple chapters on 80's metal videos like I did.

This is the book that everyone and anyone who grew up in the 80s and had MTV in their house should own. Over 600 pages of the inside gems of MTV with the rise and fall of the one cable concept that was worth all of our time. Viacom destroyed the channel as did the decision to kill off a good thing at its peak. The way it all went down was as shocking and disturbing as I expected it to be...this just confirmed it.A must own.

After reading "I Want My MTV", I must say that I am profoundly embarrassed over my musical choices. The videos of the early eighties influenced me to listen to crappy music. The chapters concerning Madonna and poor Billy Squire were not surprising, but incredibly insightful. The book does a fantastic job of illustrating why MTV was successful, why certain videos were shown over and over again and why the cable station had to abandon their original format of playing videos. The book was particularly harsh to Downtown Judy Brown, but I enjoyed her antics. Buy this book. 587 pages was not enough.

Great read for anyone who is a child of the 80s MTV generation. Great insight and insider info. behind the scenes on the whole music video revolution that was MTV. Wish MTV would have stayed the same as it was back then instead of turning into a reality network but that is not applicable here.
