Don't worry about the box - it's fine quality. The content of books is a treat for the bargain price! Lovely -something for the serious reader.

The Penguin Little Black Classics box set is an 80-volume collection of 55-page books issued to commemorate Penguin's 80th anniversary. They represent classic authors from ancient Greece to the early 20th Century. As such, they make an excellent introduction to writers you may not be familiar with. Most books contain excerpts from longer works. For example, the Rudyard Kipling volume contains six stories from his collection, Plain Tales From the Hills. Some shorter works are presented in their entirety. Robert Louis Stevenson's novella Olalla and the Communist Manifesto are examples.Penguin has also issued a similar set of 20th Century authors.

I was a little worried reading the comments, after I had placed my order, that I would be disappointed. As others have noted, it was not quite what they expected. When I opened my package, I was pleased that everything looked great, with no damage at all! The books were tightly packed within the set (as most good book sets come to prevent the books from moving around and ruining the edges). The quality of the design doesn't seem to be lacking to me-as it was what I was expecting from a small paperback. I was not searching for fancy books to line my bookshelfs, but rather fantastic stories to inspire my dreams. I feel like I got a great bunch of small books for less than a dollar a piece! I usually buy old classics that are falling apart at thrift stores and used book stores for more than that. It is an awesome introduction to authors that I have yet to read and a great addition to some of my favorites! Now where to begin...

I haven't read them all yet but this is a great collection filled with variety. Don't know why someone would rate this 4 stars for something of such great value that is filled with timeless classics.

Lots of reviews mentioned their box being ruined but mine was in perfect condition. However it does seem to be slightly too small for the amount of books and the white bit on the spines of the books don't match up/is jagged. It's kind of irritating to look at if you're bothered by that type of thing. But other than that- perfect.

I was not sure what I was getting, based on the mixed reviews. In short, the positive reviews have nailed it.Been awhile since you've read? Have a short attention span? Enjoy reading, even a little? Then this set is for you.The books are tiny, like maybe 5 inches, and around 80 pages each. Additionally, the variety is so diverse, it can't help but to expand personal reading horizons without having to worry about the enormity of such an undertaking.Amazing set, fun to read, $1 a book- all and all a great value.

Came in excellent condition. Totally worth what I paid for 80 books, most having 2-3 stories. It's fantastic to be able to experience so many different cultures so effortlessly.

These are very nice, good for a quick small read at night, they don't take up too much space (I place them on top of my bookshelf). Only complaint would be that the white line in the middle of all the books don't line up, but that doesn't bother me too much

Very interesting book. Opens your mind to new things to think about. Makes clear ancient thoughts that have not been exploredmuch before. A challenge to your thinking!

came really fast! one of the truly great thinkers of his time

Excellent documentation of matriarch Her-story.

Very thought provoking.

The author went at the topic balls out, even knowing he'd be ridiculed and worse. And while the author's 'conviction' was misplaced in some critical spots; he brought out enough so that, sifted through, the solid nuggets of value pan out. The author's classics scholarship - in extent and depth - is outstanding. And you get plenty of 'right to the source' in his citations. It's just his interpretation (and his obliviousness to the wonky sexism of his time) that muddle his writing. It's a great get-to-the-bottom-of-things book - same's studying alchemy takes you to the roots of 'chemistry'. Seems to me, anyway.

Great book

Johann Jakob Bachofen (1815-1887) was a Swiss antiquarian, jurist and anthropologist, and professor for Roman law at the University of Basel. This volume is a translation of 'Mutterrecht und Urreligion,' a selection of Bachofen's writings that was first published in 1926.He says, "Myth is the exegesis of the symbol. It unfolds in a series of outwardly connected actions what the symbol embodies in a unity." (Pg. 48) He adds, "Therein lies the spell of mythical representation, which shows us the great deeds of the primordial age in the muted light of distant melancholy recollection, and that is what lends them the aura of consecration characteristic of the ancient necropolises." (Pg. 50)He admits, "The present work deals with a historical phenomenon which few have observed and no one has investigated in its full scope. Up until now archaeologists have had nothing to say of mother right... The most elementary spadework remains to be done, for the culture period to which mother right pertains has never been seriously studied. Thus we are entering upon virgin territory." (Pg. 69)He argues, "The mythical tradition is seen to be an authentic, independent record of the primordial age, a record in which invention plays no part... There is scarcely a feature of the matriarchal system that cannot be documented in this way... There is still another reason why myth demonstrates the authenticity of mother right. The contrast between mythical conceptions and those of subsequent days is so marked that where more recent ideas prevailed, it would not have been possible to invent the phenomenon of matriarchy." (Pg. 72-74) Later, he argues, "All the myths relating to our subject embody a memory of real events experienced by the human race. They represent not fictions but historical realities. The stories of the Amazons and Bellerophon are real and not poetic." (Pg. 150-151)He states, "The elevation of woman over man arouses our amazement most especially by its contradiction to the relation of physical strength. The law of nature confers the scepter of power on the stronger. If it is torn away from him by feebler hands, other aspects of human nature must have been at work, deeper powers must have made their influence felt." (Pg. 85)He adds, "I shall pursue the religious basis of matriarchy no further: it is most deeply rooted in woman's vocation for the religious life... Seen in this light, matriarchy becomes a sign of cultural progress, a source and guarantee of its benefits, a necessary period in the education of mankind, and hence the fulfillment of a natural law which governs peoples as well as individuals." (Pg. 91) He contends, "Amazonism is a universal phenomenon... Amazonism, despite its savage degeneration, signifies an appreciable rise in human culture." (Pg. 105)Bachofen's writings had a HUGE impact on feminist writers of the 20th century; and it's illuminating to read his own writings, rather than just the interpretations that are given by later writers.

Few gardeners who have cultivated the edible rhubarb (Rheum xcultorum) can deny that they have admired the columns of white flowers unfurling in globular splendor in early summer. But homage to such things in the vegetable garden is generally bittersweet, often but a swan song of yet another spring gone by — the end to a season of freshly picked and eaten produce. As a young gardener, in fact, I was taught to never let the blossoming stems emerge from our rather antique hand-me-down clump of "pie plant" that we grew on the far side of the vegetable patch. Advice well taken but, fortunately, not always heeded. I only recently began growing true Rheum palmatum, a species native to China and, in its typical white-flowered form, infrequently cultivated. Having brought this back from a collecting foray to England, I use the plant to good effect in my light woodland, where it produces gigantic, Gunnera-like foliage in matte green and erect flowering panicles of white rising to 6 ft. (1.8 m) or higher. Certainly the best-known of the ornamental rhubarbs is this species's red-flowering cultivar, R. palmatum 'Atrosanguineum'. With a flair for the dramatic, 'Atrosanguineum' awakens in early spring with ruby-red foliage, which conjures nothing short of pure, unadulterated anticipation for what is to come. As the jagged leaves unfurl to nearly 3 ft. (0.9 m) across, the reddish tints of the upper surfaces take on a patina of aged copper, while the undersurfaces retain an intensity of matte rose-red. I am held spellbound in the early days of May when the fresh, upwardly held leaves, backlit by sun, capture and illuminate a palette of arresting colors and textures. Yet the show has only just begun, as in early June a massive flowering stem heads skyward, carrying large, knobby buds sheathed with scarlet bracts. After the stems reach upward to 7 ft. (2.1 m), the buds unfurl to create an airy spectacle of crimson flowers with cerise overtones. If good seed set occurs, an additional season of interest continues with numerous glossy red, triangular fruit dangling from this treelike inflorescence, Several other selected cultivars of R. palmatum are available, including 'Red Herald' and 'Hadspen Crimson' (both by Eric Smith) and 'Red Select'. I should mention that the distinctive foliage shape and color is more a product of patience than of simply acquiring a good clone. Foliage on young plants is less lobed and less colorful than on mature specimens.

This is a great addition to plant exploration literature. Dan Hinkley takes us to many of the worlds cold climate botanical hot spots. Each chapter focuses on a particular genus or plant group, beginning with a relevant extract from a diary or letter written on a plant hunting expedition. The rest of the chapter covers the authors first hand experiences with the plants both in the wild and in the garden. There is explicit and useful advice about hardiness, cultivation an propagation as well. The selection of photos in excellent, but what really elevates this book is the writing style. The tone is relaxed and full of fun with out reducing the informational quality. I found myself laughing out loud at the author's self deprecating humour, while jealously wishing I lived in a colder wetter climate.

Dan Hinkley's fascination with the plant kingdom is infectious. The more I read through the pages of this book, the more I want to become a plant explorer - seeking out unknown plant species and bringing them into cultivation. As Dan travels to remote locations around the globe, often high up on steep mountain slopes, he manages to discover spectacular specimens of tropical-looking schefflera, holboellia vines, jasmine, tetrapanax, and star anise, to name a few. It is exciting to see what can potentially be grown in temperate zones, such as where I live in Seattle. If you a lover of unusual plants, this book will ignite your imagination.

A-OK

Very impressive and suggestive book to hobby gardener and professional horticulturist.Every reader become aware of how so plentiful attractive plants are living on this earth. To draw them into the garden from secret forest, desert, sea shore etc for our enjoyment is well done by this book.

This book is for the person that has an interest in rare and unusual perennials. The author shared lots of good information about each plant.

I saw him speak and got him to sign it. Everyone in the audience was jealous when I told them I didn't have to go to the expensive Bainbridge book store but went to Amazon. Good book, great pictures.

I have read many, many gardening/garden books. I read them for informational purposes, or to learn a specific talent that I need for my personal garden. As I knew of Heronswood Nursery, I decide to purchase this book, having read through one of the catalogs several years ago.I rush to this book as soon as I get home. Then I sit down in my most comfortable chair, and I am instantly transported to parts of the world I can only imagine. I know many of these plants, although I don't grow them in my yard. Now I feel as if I know each plant intimately. The scope of information available in the book is such that I believe I might actually be able to grow some of these great plants, if I am patient, pay attention to the siting of the plant, and the specific needs of the plants.I love the manner in which the book was written. It is as if you are having a conversation with an old friend, who just wants to tell you about his most recent experience with the plants he encountered on his travels. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in shrubs and vines, and something a little out of the ordinary.

This is Dan's second book on the Explorer's Garden Series. A great read, giving his perfect experiences on the way plants grow in their native lands and how he discovered them growing, often up banks or cliffs. His masterful prose is a delight to read, many fine details emerge of his worldly travels. Extremely well documented are his chapters in this book; whereby he takes a genus and gives you wonderful information on it. Take for example his thoughts on the shrub- viburnum; a great lot of info is given in this chapter and the reader comes away, actually blown away with details of this perfect shrub. The photos throughout are a delight, clear and beautifully presented. "There are few gardeners where validation of a plant's worthiness I would take so seriously", I quote Dan's words here, from his forward to Marina Christopher's recent book; definitely applies here to Dan's treasured book.Purchase and enjoy it, hanging on every word in this detailed masterpiece.
