My background includes calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and other applied mathematics, but I have not had a course in real analysis. W. A. Sutherland intended this text as the next step after analysis.After a brief foray, I retreated, placed Sutherland back on my bookshelf, and attacked some marginally easier introductory texts: Metric Spaces by Victor Bryant, Introduction to Topology by Bert Mendelson, and most recently, several chapters in Introduction to Analysis by Maxwell Rosenlicht. I periodically return to W. A. Sutherland's text to measure my understanding. I am now working on chapter five, Compact Spaces.I doubt that Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces would be foreboding to students that are familiar with real analysis. Sutherland understands that the abstractness and generalization can be difficult and shows concern with motivating the student. He repeatedly attempts to illustrate the value of generalization, especially in the study of continuity.Sutherland often uses a lengthy series of examples of increasing difficulty to illustrate abstract concepts. In his discussion of metric spaces, we begin with Euclidian n-space metrics, and move on to discrete metric spaces, function spaces, and even Hilbert sequence spaces. He introduces open sets and topological spaces in a similar fashion.The author occasionally suggests that the student might wish to make a geometrical diagram to help clarify some subtle point, but Sutherland includes few geometrical drawings in his text. His focus is clearly on proofs using the axioms of metric spaces and topological spaces.Sutherland highlights sections that either require more knowledge of abstract algebra, or for other reasons are thought to be more severe.Despite Sutherland's use of Introduction in the title, I suggest that any reader considering independent study might defer tackling Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces until after completing a more basic text. Possibly a better title might be A Second Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces.

I enjoyed reading this book because of its clarity, conciseness, and nice way of relating topological and metric spaces. This book is ideal for the student who is learning about these subjects for the first time, whether or not they intend to do more advanced work on the subject. The reader who wants to go on and learn about more advanced topics, should consult Munkres's book.

A lot of books on topology assume some basic knowledge of real analysis, which can throw a lot of readers off. This book starts from the very beginning, and thus is truly a great introduction. Each section has some good exercises, with even a few pointers at the back of the book for the more challenging ones. It starts with topological aspects, and then refers to them in the case of metric spaces (amongst many others), which is a much better approach than most other books, as the reader doesn't take the details of the specific to the general. A great little book, which is a must for most advanced maths Analysis courses.

When I finally convinced my parents that a mac would solve some of their computer issues, the next step was walking them through the transition of using it. Although I'm a fairly good teacher, I needed something stronger to make it easy for them. Especially at times when I can't be there to show them. This worked perfectly.To the point that they no longer even needed me to walk them through anything.Rather than just writing out how to do something, every step shows a photo of what your computer monitor will look like when you do and WHERE you are supposed to click on something. This saves so much time looking for certain buttons, or clicking on the wrong thing. It walks you through all you need to know to get working on an imac, no matter what experience you have had before.Whether buying it as a guide to teach yourself, as a tool to teach someone else all the really important things you need to know, or even as a instructor for the novice to use themselves, this was a really useful guide...my dad said it was like the instruction model that should have come with the computer to start.

I've been using PCs for almost 20 years, but grew tired of the bugs/viruses and continual glitches. Finally bought a iMac but had never used Apple operating systems. This book is as basic as it gets, and that's what I needed...picture by picture illustrations of various tasks. If that is what you are looking for, this is the book for you. If you have ANY experience with Macs, this is probably too basic for you and you'd be ill-served with the purchase. If you're a baby Mac user like me, this will help you get through the initiation!

I have recently started using a Mac having been a PC user for many years and although I found most things intuitive, I kept running into the occasional problem and needed help which is why I purchased this book. At first glance I must admit I thought it was too basic, but I could not have been more wrong. It is very easy to follow and understand and makes learning how to get the most from my Mac a fast process. Would strongly recommend this book to anyone starting out with a Mac, or moving from a PC. A great reference guide and something my wife who has also switched to a Mac, never leaves far from her side.

The Teach Yourself books are great. Being a PC person I needed some guidelines for my new iMac. This book provided me with tips and guidelines that I needed to make myself more proficient on the iMac. The book provides an easy and sensible way to get comfortable with this new piece of equipment. Kudos to the publishers and the people who created this.

Great book for learning about the iMac. It is easy to read and provides what I needed to get started working on my new iMac. I read and highlighted it and now keep it beside me at the computer for reference when I get stuck on something.

The book is beautiful & very educational but many Amazon customer reviews have stated this same issue: these books are DAMAGED. AMAZON, stop selling damaged books as “New” when they are obviously damaged! A picture is enclosed & I won’t go through the trouble of returning it.

This was a gift which was well received. I was disappointed in the cover as it was scratched and the sleeve had uneven creases.

The book arrived in a poor cardboard packaging, but it was in perfect conditions. The book is bigger than it seems in the pictures, but that is great, since this thing has beautiful pictures inside. Bought it as a gift and I think is perfect for any tattoo enthusiast, both for general culture and style ideas.

I've followed her history posts on social media for some time. Great researcher and I pre-ordered this as soon as I saw it was coming out.

My sister's fiancé is a tattoo fanatic, so I had hoped that this book would suit his fancy. He was blown away by the photos and descriptions. I am tempted to buy it myself.
