Let me start by stating that I am in love with Maria Popova. I heard her at the 92nd street Y last year, and read Brain Pickings every Wednesday and Sunday. I am a fanboy. Thus I eagerly awaited Figuring. The book attempts to establish intellectual songlines of a diverse group of scientists and poets, mostly women, over some four centuries.The problem with the book (I am giving up on it at p93) is that most of the connections are slight at best; something along the line of... "and could it be merely coincidence that X and Y both use the conjunctive "and" in their writing, and as far as we can determine, both put salt in their soup, thus prefiguring FDA guidelines by a century...What seems to work well in short pieces which gesture at intellectual congruence falls apart in this more extended format, becoming a sort of intellectual ADHD.I will continue to read this most gifted and thoughtful author, and am sorry the current work fails me (clearly it hasn't for other reviewers)If anyone wants a pristine copy I will send it to you for the price of postage--you may have better luck.

I’ve never felt more grateful for the existence of a writer. This book is about science, humanity,love, ideas, beauty. There is a refreshing alignment of science with art, in that science is essentially organic art- that is if we judge art to be what inspires. And, it’s about the precious vulnerable smallness we get to feel when astounded by the wonder of the big sky of the anatomy of a daffodil or the upending of love. Maria Popova brings the scientist’s of wonder to life, especially women scientists, who are otherwise unknown (zest least to me). Maria Popova is a scientist of human hearts. She she holds out, with great care, for us to see, what is sweet and tender in the hearts of these greatest of minds. By humanizing their greatness, she lets us see the beautiful in every human, in myself. A main theme is beauty - the people she writes of are driven to genius when awestruck by beauty. And the theme of beauty is within Maria Popova’s gorgeous writing. Very gorgeous, inspiring, and a sense that every word is infused with profound respect and love for her subjects and for the ideas. You’d figure a book about science, poetry, history, love, and everything else human, would get bogged down. It doesn’t. It’s the smoothest read. It feels graciously offered.

The first sentence alone is worth the price of this beautiful work of art. I read it over and over, and then typed it up and sent it to a friend. I'm going to commit it to memory, it's that breathtaking. This book is a treasure. Thank you, Maria Popova!!

As a fan of "Brain Pickings" I sense what I'm in for, yet also feel certain I'm poised for a transformational experience amidst Ponderables, Ideas and Catalystic Tidbits.

For years I taught a course at the University of Vermont entitled " America in the Jazz Age: A History of the Roaring Twenties" and if this "Drinkable Feast" had been around at the time--I would have gladly used it in the course.The book is so well written and just "hopping" with anecdotes of the famous and the decadent of the period--including Ezra Pound, Picasso, Gertrude Stein, and Alice B. Toklas; Ernest Hemingway; (Ernest and Hadley); the Fitzgeralds, Peggy Guggenheim; Shakespeare and Company etc...the list is endless and it is buttressed by the varioushotels and bars and the drinks that they were serving at the time or rather what was in fashion and when--along with the recipes and their different variations.Some time is also spent with the expats' various eccentric members and why and where they were in Paris and France...along with all this one also meets the various famous bartenders at the various bars such as Harrys, the Ritz, Les Deux Maggots; Le Dome etc...I could not put this book down and would glady recommend it to anyone...Bravo to you Phillip Greene...and thank you very much...Prof. Rene Vallee,Grand Isle, Vermont 05458

The rafter jig idea was great, but there just wasn't enough info and detail to actually build it (I thought). I must admit, I'am not a pro as this book "by pros for pros" claims, but I guess if I was a pro, then I would probably find the information in this book to be too elementary. This book is ok for learning roof basics, but it's not enough info and detail to fully learn all that's involved with building roofs.

Good book, good explanations, valuable for the weekend warrior or professional builder i believe.

While no one article completely covered their special topic on roof framing the whole group did a pretty good job of it. Some really good pictures to go with the text and lots of good hints to help the learning builder.

Many of the chapters in this book are written by individual carpenters who "do things their own way". For instance, in the first chapter, the writer says to disregard previous techniques and use his method. In the 2nd and 3rd chapters, the writer talks about using power tools that are either outrageously expensive or not even avilable any more. Further, there is no discussion or summary of basic roof geometry and calculations. The tag phrase "for pros by pros" is quite misleading. It is merely 15 chapters of guys telling how THEY frame a roof. Anyone, even pro carpenters using this as a refresher, should start off with a tutorial on basic roof geometry, design, and construction methods. If you are looking for info on how to properly design and construct roof framing, don't waste your money on this one!

After 45 years building I have the knowlege that is in this book.I design build. I like and need time saving short cuts.I am way too busy to take time rememering a specific problem I solved several years ago so, having this book helps me visualize the perfect sollution without wasting time remembering and reinventing.It is well laid out.

Happy with this. Can teach new skills/ideas. But it is great for a quick daily activity to give your brain a break . Helps my daughter a lot when she is struggling with a certain art project. She gets a fun break and it opens her mind to go back and be productive.

I bought this as a gift for someone dear. She loved it! I looked through the book before I gave it too her and I was impressed with all the creative prompts.

So cool. Amazing quality, full of awesome ideas and space. I can't possibly love it more.

Honestly a super great idea executed poorly. You'd think this book would focus on principles of drawing but it is asking for use of watercolors every few pages and cut paper crafts... and the paper quality of the book cannot hold up to paints, glue or most type of artist markers. The pages wrinkle up, ink bleeds through and the back side of each pages is used for your next day... so if your colors bleed you next day or two are trashed. Lastly it's not as inspiring as I had hoped... its mark making, scribbling, and coloring on most days and the other days are flowers, trees, and leaves. Seems to be very repetitive. =/ a little upset I got both drawing and art books. They tend to repeat quite often.This would be great for small children or adults with no art background but for practice and insperation it's a bit disappointing. 3 stars for overall concept.

It’s incredible to imagine that this snowy countryside was once a tropical rainforest and that its remains are now buried deep below where I stand today. Scientific proof of what once was. Do you ever wonder about what used to be? Do you wonder about what can’t be seen.Will Hunt’s curiosity about the unknown began the summer he turned 16, when he discovered an abandoned train tunnel that ran under his neighborhood. It was this experience that eventually launched his passion for urban exploring- a hobby that allowed him to travel all over the world as he sought out abandoned subway platforms (ghost stations), dodged police officers in foreign countries, and encountered “Mole People”. While in the Catacombs of Paris, he even came across an underground library, La Librairie, where urban explorers left books for others to borrow. Oh, my soul!I saw that we- all of us, the human species- have always felt a quiet pull from the underground, that we are connected to this realm as we are to our own shadow.I must say my favorite bit may have been the story about the “Mole Man of Hackney” who decided to dig a wine cellar in his basement and never stopped. He kept burrowing until his home started to collapse. In his words, “I just have a big basement.”Underground by Will Hunt was fascinating and really well done! If you are a fan of traveling from your couch or, like me, are simply saving your cabbage and working all the side hustles so you can travel in real life, this is the book for you! Hearing about his expeditions energized my sense of adventure and learning the science of the “worlds beneath our feet” caused me to look at things from a whole new perspective. Microbiologists keep finding life deeper and deeper inside the earth and are even discovering pockets of water that are more than a billion years old. In addition, it’s estimated that more than half of the world’s caves are undiscovered! We explore outer space, but there is so much to find here- our oceans and underground landscapes are just as much a mystery.

I enjoyed this book more than anything I've read in a long time. The author takes you on a guided adventure into the subterranean world beneath your feet with passion and insight. He joins the urban explorers in their underground (and illegal) journeys through the subway tunnels and sewers of New York and Paris, ventures deep into abandoned mines and Mayan ritual caves. This was a page-turner and a can't-put-it-down kind of book. I was sad when I came to the end of it. Highly recommended.

I first heard Will Hunt on the radio in my car discussing his book. There was something about Will's affable enthusiasm toward his unlikely subject that hooked me. Once I started reading I was mesmerized by the connections with human history and mythology he lays out for the reader. Expertly interlacing his personal experience with stories of those that have gone underground before him, experiments conducted and all manner of subject matter related to what happens to our senses as we descend from the surface. The research is astounding but he invites you to imagine you're with him on an underground excursion and to tie yourself both to the skylarking aspect of jumping a subway tunnel barrier and to ancestral rituals from the dawning of humankind.

This isn’t a book I’d normally gravitate toward (my non-fiction tastes skew heavily toward politics, economics). But I absolutely couldn’t put this book down! It’s a blend of science, philosophy, mythology and New Yorker-esque profiles of fascinating characters you’ve never heard of but suddenly want to know everything about. In the end, it’s a book about mystery and self-discovery, and the beautiful way those two concepts intertwine. Highly recommend!

I was totally blown away by this book. It opened a new (and old) world that I had only known tiny glimpses of. The writing is absolutely tasty and very well researched. I can't wait to see what else he produces - I will read them all!

Will Hunt's incredibly beautiful prose and infectious sense of wonder carried me from chapter to chapter. When it was over, I wished there were another 200 pages. This book is a remarkable achievement and I highly recommend it to anyone who cares about cities, archaeology, ancient civilizations, biology, the human species, psychology, mythology -- this book has it all. And the writing is so good.

Hunt makes dirt sound like a song; he weaves poetry out of pitch black.

What a fascinating subject...in the right hands. Will Hunt is no Bill Bryson, and the intrinsically interesting topic of worlds beneath our feet is simply ground down by sparse facts interlaced with the author's not-so-interesting personal experiences. Full disclosure: I haven't finished reading the book. I gave up after the dull story of Hunt's traverse of the Paris sewers with a band of tame colleagues. Not that I can write better - I can't - but as a reader, I'm waiting for someone else to take this topic and give it the full attention it deserves.
