Grace: On the Journey to God, by Michael Casey

Review

“I find Michael Casey to be our present-day Merton. Grace reveals why Fr. Michael is such a beloved spiritual mentor for so many. He weaves diverse sources into his own pondering, with wisdom gained from decades of living monastic life. He has much to offer to anyone who yearns for a down-to-earth relationship with God. A gentle, spiritual master—journey with him!” —Laura Swan, author of The Forgotten Desert Mothers and The Wisdom of the BeguinesListening to the Voice of God in Your Heart A Review of Grace: On the Journey to GodMichael CaseyReviewed by Mark Jenkins in Englewood Review of BooksWith everything that Michael Casey does, I can’t help but wonder when he finds time to sleep! He is one of the most widely sought after, erudite, and respected priests active in the world of Roman Catholic monasticism. A select bibliography of his books and articles spans ten full pages, covering more than 45 years of publication. Fr. Casey has lectured and led retreats in more than forty countries on 6 continents. He was a primary force and the principal author behind the 1990 revision of the “The Constitutions and Statutes of the Order of Cistercians of Strict Observance.” He served as prior of the Tarrawarra Monastery in Australia from 1988 to 2003 and vocation director from 1998 to 2012. He has written extensively on the care and formation of novices and has contributed significant, substantial scholarship to the field of Benedictine studies.Given all this, I approached his latest work, Grace: On the Journey to God(Paraclete Press, 2018) expecting to be guided by a wise and insightful mind. And, in almost every way, that expectation did not go unmet. These chapters are drawn from various retreats Casey has led in religious communities around the world. As such, they delve deeply into matters of the spiritual life, leading the reader to focus upon fifteen discrete, yet related aspects of the spiritual journey. The opening chapter, “The Grace of Discontinuity,” is one of the strongest, reminding the reader that conversion is always the starting point for the spiritual journey. Our spiritual lives are permeated with a discontinuity that is conversion. Casey adroitly notes, however, that because conversion “has its origin outside ourselves, mostly it is unwelcome” (7).With the exception of the appropriateness of beginning with a chapter on Conversion and concluding with chapters on Community and Communion, there seems little reason for the reader to feel compelled to take this book in the order in which it is presented. There is an almost unavoidable unevenness to the chapters, likely due to their having been composed at different times and for different audiences. I was especially appreciative of the chapter on the leisure, which Casey calls “a time and space of freedom and recuperation, in which the deep self can find fuller expression and, eventually, reach its perfection” (147). Drawing upon the work of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (of TED Talks fame) and his psychological concept of “flow,” Casey builds an effective case for the essential quality of leisure for the spiritual life. “Leisure is purposeful and personal activity,” he writes, “that aspires to be marked by flow. It is not slackness or idleness or the pursuit of recreational activities. It is, above all, being attentive to the present moment, open to all its implications, living it to the full” (151).Likewise, in his chapter, “The Grace of Faith,” Casey offers keen insight into the nature of prayer. Prayer, he suggests, “could almost be defined as a period in which we deliberately give up control—and maybe that is why we are so reluctant to engage in it” (131). In many such places throughout the book Casey exhibits an understanding, not only of prayer, but also of the very human condition of the one who prays. This book is not without its share of problems. As I have already noted, it is drawn from material developed for, and aimed at, what the author calls “religious communities.” It seems likely that most, if not all, of those communities are Roman Catholic, specifically Roman Catholic monastic houses. Because of the many similarities between the author’s life and that of Thomas Merton, Casey is often compared favorably with him. There were numerous points when I found myself reminded by him of something in Merton. And, likely because of their similar ecclesial backgrounds, there was a certain je ne sais quoi about the book that felt oddly familiar. My youth was highly influenced by Merton and this was familiar terrain and comfortable territory. Still, fifty years have passed since Fr. Merton last put pen to paper and some parts of the book have an almost doctrinaire quality with a strong adherence to tradition that, as a 21st century reader, I found unsettling.

From Publishers Weekly

Beware of falling in love while on vacation. You might end up buying a riad. Less of a tourist center than Marrakesh or Tangier, Fez is the largest car-free urban area and the best-preserved medieval walled city in the world. While on vacation, Australian photojournalist Clarke and her husband were bewitched by the exotic city, deciding to return and begin a search for a riad (a large home with an inner courtyard) to renovate. This enjoyable narrative chronicles the couple's navigation through a puzzling new world. Readers get to tag along while Clarke deals with Kafkaesque bureaucracy, maneuvers delicately through relationships with neighbors, contractors and construction workers, and goes back to school to improve her French. She weaves this personal narrative together with snippets of the fascinating history and culture of her adopted country. This is an all too brief but enjoyable excursion into one woman's experience with a place she clearly loves. Readers will surely fall under its spell as well. A dozen years is barely a batting of an eyelash in the history of Fez. So don't feel this book is dated because it is 12 or 15 years old. Ms Clarke's reaction, and that of her husband to Fez was profound and life changing. Their decision to purchase and restore an old Riad in the heart of the Medina took a rare mix of courage, recklessness, determination and successful enterprise. My wife and I have only been to Fez once, and it was perhaps the most memorable part of a month long independent ramble through Morocco. We were enchanted by the artistic and cultural pungency of the city. The author went one better and nearly went native after a fashion. Despite the headwinds of local government bureaucracy and cultural barriers on both sides of the equation, the foreigners' dedication to respectful preservation and willingness to admire and embrace the city's customs and spirit earn respect and support. The craftsmen and workers employed in the project became their friends as well as their employees. It's a charming tale. One worth recording. While I wish there were more illustrations, one can find much that is pertinent on their websites and other Moroccan sources. Her book is not just about architecture, but weaves in a lot of her experiences in getting to know and be known by a wide range of Moroccans and a few expats. It is a thoughtful and worthwhile journey

I truly enjoyed this book, and the people in it were interesting and likable. I like Suzanna's writing style, and enjoyed the cultural information that is included throughout the book. I also very much enjoyed the descriptions of the riad and the renovations. I was disappointed that the blog mentioned in the book appears to have been reincarnated as more a commercial venture than the personal blog that I imagine it was while the book was being written. I visited, hoping to see photos of the riad and the renovations, etc., but was unable to find anything like that buried in the newish blog.As someone else mentioned, the Kindle version of this book is an absolute mess. It badly needs to be edited. Randomly interspersed throughout sentences are fragments that include the book title and page numbers. If this had happened once or twice it could be overlooked, but there are many instances where a sentence is interrupted by the title and page number. There are many missing words, and other typographical and editorial errors, as well.

I picked up a copy of 'A House in Fez' prior to traveling to Fez myself. Suffice it to say, Clarke is a brave soul for undertaking the task of refurbishing a traditional Moroccan rehab, but you can read more about that yourselves. Clarke approaches expatriate life in Morocco with care, sensitive to the many issues involved when a foreigner from a wealthier country inserts themselves into the heart of a rich culture that is in many ways under attack. At many points throughout this read, I felt as if I were at the Riad myself, experiencing the chaos alongside the author. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in traditional Morocco and/or traveling to Fez itself.

My husband and I love to travel internationally, and have traveled on our own to some pretty exotic places. We have toyed with the idea of buying a house somewhere outside the United States. This book presents pros and cons for doing so, regardless of where one is thinking of having a home abroad.I appreciate the way Suzanna Clarke describes her experiences without becoming overly self-absorbed. Au contraire, her self-deprecation is quite endearing and amusing. I particularly liked reading about the relationships she formed with all kinds of people; from expats, to her neighbors, bureaucrats and workers. She certainly got it right from the beginning – you can't buy and restore a home in a place like like Fez without an inshallah attitude, which she and her husband seemed to completely embrace. Our next trip is to Morocco, and I'm very glad I read this book. It is well written and fast paced. The enjoyment of the reading experience is enhanced by the rich and interesting context one receives into Fez and Morocco through her commentary about culture, architecture, history, and religion. And I enjoyed following up reading the book with the visuals on Suzanna's blog.Although I loved reading about Suzanna's experience, I could not in my wildest dreams ever imagine buying a house in Fez and living the drama she described. But kudos to her and her husband for their perseverance. I hope that their cultural immersion continues to be the amazingly rich and zany life experience they had hoped for, and then some!

An Australian couple visit Fez, Morocco, fall in love with the city, culture, history and architecture and decide to buy a restore an old Riad in the heart of the ancient Medina of Fez. That's where this account of a clash of cultures begins. Fez Morocco is not only geographically foreign, it is of another past time. The very essence of life is at least from the 19th century, if not earlier. Materials and skilled workers are in short supply. Bureaucracy is stifling. Graft and bribery rampant. And the prevailing attitude of workers, officials, and residents of this ancient city is best summed up by the ubiquitous phrase - "Insha'Allah", "God willing". Clarke is a good writer but she starts to repeat experiences and results again and again towards the end of her saga. I started this non-fiction story before visiting Fez, then picked it up and finished it after my visit. It was like a return visit a second time, which was enjoyable.

Getting ready for a trip to Morocco and this gives good descriptions about buildings and people - a lot of information it will be handy to know that would be boring reading about without the "foreigner buys and renovates house" story line. The part about "we go away for months and come back to find work not done as we expected" is a little tedious and naive, but the book gives nice insight into Morocco. Of course, I have no basis for judging accuracy.

I am an experienced 3D modeler who has tried a number of times to learn Blender without success. In part, this may be due to the variety of 3D modeling programs I have used over the years: SolidWorks, TrueSpace, ArchiCAD, Revit, SoftPlan, Rhino 3D, and SketchUp. Blender is quite different from all of these programs. "The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics: Computer Modeling & Animation, Fourth Edition" is lavishly illustrated and assumes you know nothing about 3D modeling or Blender. I have found it invaluable as I make a new effort to learn this challenging program. As I write this review, a new, and hopefully easier to learn, version of Blender is scheduled for release in just a few months. "The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics: Computer Modeling & Animation" is based on version 2.79 that is still the main version in wide use. The book breaks learning Blender down into simple steps where each feature of the program is explained in just a handful of pages each. As a person who has used a variety of methods to learn 3D modeling programs: books, videos, and in-person classes, I highly recommend "The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics: Computer Modeling & Animation" for anyone interested in learning Blender.

Pure printing quality of images and fonts, but this is not main problem. I am still reading first chapter but I badly surprised about a lot of stupid mistakes which must be fixed in 2th edition of book but still here in 4th edition: like wrong left/right mouse button, Alt/Shift modifier, canceling some action by indirect way, so kind of strange. Seems "4th editions" is only to mark that is like "up to date" and not old but truth is that text looks likes directly form 1th edition. There is no even chapter names on every page, it is very inconvenient for navigation, and I cannot understand how it can be in 4th edition. Now I've realized that I had to choose other book, I just was attracted by colour print, broad coverage and 4th editions (thought all mistakes already fixed) but print not good, 4th edition is a joke and broad coverage already doesn't matter if it fails on first steps. Usually I write directly to publisher or writer about mistakes but in this case looks like they absolutely don't care.

Exactly what I was looking for.

This book gave me a deeper understanding on using blender. This book did the job that the online video tutorials could not do. Well worth the investment!!!

The reference. Well Done. Must Have. "nuff said.

So others are aware, this is kind of a preliminary review as I'm only 40 pages into the book; but so far as I'm concerned, John has done an excellent job of not just creating the de facto printed user manual for Blender but also one that includes many hints and tips that can set you on the path to becoming an expert Blender user. If, like me, you find jumping from one video tutorial to the next to be a somewhat discombobulating experience, here's the answer to your prayers. You certainly won't find a better illustrated book on the subject matter. If you're new to Blender (and maybe even if you're not) and you're serious about learning Blender, don't hesitate to buy this book. It's the perfect companion to Blender itself.

Good learning Blender book.

Audre has been a favorite of mine for years. My favorite poetry of hers addresses fear, courage and strength. She is not afraid to tackle tough subjects. She is also not so abstract as to be completely unreadable, but manages to get her message across beautifully.

This is a rumination on beauty in the world. Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek who is one of the most acclaimed theoretical physicists of his times brings us a chronicle of what beauty in science means. He focuses mainly on physics but does not neglect other sciences. The book is thoughtfully written and is beautifully illustrated with images from art, science and history. It reveals a mind that is as comfortable probing the deep mysteries of the cosmos as it is pondering the everyday objects of our world.Wilczek's approach is roughly chronological and one of his goals is to reveal the seamless unification of beauty in many different contexts. For instance he starts with an account of Pythagoras's theorem which pointed to a crucial connection between numbers and geometric figures. But Pythagoras also discovered simple and pleasing relationships between musical frequencies and the length of various string instruments. Remarkably, these relationships also mirror some of the relationships found in the wavelike nature of subatomic particles. Thus beauty in sound is connected to beauty at the microscopic level. Similarly Wilczek dwells on Goethe's intriguing ruminations on color. While some of these ruminations were scientifically flawed, Wilczek explores how they connect to our modern understanding of color based on the physics and biology of vision. It is when Wilczek starts talking about beauty in physics that he is really in his element. How does one define beauty in science in general and physics in particular? As we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Wilczek convincingly provides some criteria that have guided physicists' search for this elusive but still familiar concept through the ages. One very important criterion is symmetry, and Wilczek tells us how assumptions of symmetry in equations and the behavior of subatomic particles underlie almost every concept of modern physics, from relativity to the Higgs boson. The second criterion is economy: many of the most profound equations of physics can fit on a napkin. The third is unification which, as pointed out before, leads to pleasing similarities between the mundane (musical sound, color) and the deep (cosmology, quantum mechanics) as well as between many branches of physics itself. In fact Wilczek's account demonstrates why the mundane is actually deeper than we think. Stunning examples of unification in physics include Maxwell's marriage of electricity with magnetism and Einstein's marriage of space with time. The later parts of the book which talk about concepts like the standard model of particle physics, gauge symmetry, Noether's theorem and quantum electrodynamics can get a bit hairy, but even if you are not a physicist you can still appreciate how these concepts embody the core concepts of beauty that Wilczek mentions. Things get a bit trickier when Wilczek starts talking about complex systems which cannot be pithily described with simple equations. These systems are more amenable to models than fundamental laws, and the challenges of defining beauty in such cases is illustrated by a collaboration Wilczek had with a fellow scientist in which a model that they came up with had so many moving parts that ultimately it was hard to see where exactly one could search for beauty or elegance in the construction. This discussion tantalizingly hints at the existence of so-called emergent systems like the weather, the stock market and consciousness which are not reducible to the sum of their individual parts. I would have appreciated a more detailed discussion of beauty in the context of these systems since science is likely going to focus more on them in the upcoming years.Nevertheless, this is a fine meld of ruminations on beauty across science, art, music and many other aspects of the human and natural world. Wilczek is a clear guide on this journey, and although he may not answer all our questions on beauty, he certainly makes us question and think, which should be the hallmark of a good teacher. Almost two hundred years ago John Keats said, "Beauty is truth, truth is beauty." Wilczek shows us how Keats's utterance is largely true.

This is a broad, deep and mind-expanding book by a Nobel prize winning physicist covering many topics—the philosophy of Plato of the link between the nature of reality and the beauty of form, the functioning and limitations of the human sensory perception of electromagnetic waves (light) and of hydrodynamic waves (sound) relative to what is actually out there to be “seen” and “heard”, the history of science from the Greeks to the Standard Model (or Core Theory as preferred by Wilczek), the extraordinary relation between physical reality and mathematics (numbers, geometry, symmetry), the relation of beauty in the form of symmetry to physical reality, the ongoing extensions of the Core Theory using Supersymmetry. Supersymmetry (SUSY for the cogniscenti) is a form of mathematical magic that has particles being changed from one thing in one “property space” to another in another “property space” and with transformations that change quantum dimensions into ordinary dimensions without changing the laws of physics. The fallback position when things don’t agree with observation is to postulate that the equations have many solutions and the solutions that have the sought-after symmetry are unstable.Wilczec’s description of his and others’ efforts to extend The Standard Model, or as he prefers it The Core Theory, particularly around page 300, strongly calls to mind “The Glass Bead Game (German: Das Glasperlenspiel) is the last full-length novel of the German author Hermann Hesse. It was begun in 1931 and published in Switzerland in 1943 after being rejected for publication in Germany due to Hesse's anti-Fascist views.[1] The Glass Bead Game takes place at an unspecified date centuries into the future. Hesse suggested that he imagined the book's narrator writing around the start of the 25th century.[4] The setting is a fictional province of central Europe called Castalia, which was reserved by political decision for the life of the mind; technology and economic life are kept to a strict minimum. Castalia is home to an austere order of intellectuals with a twofold mission: to run boarding schools for boys, and to nurture and play the Glass Bead Game, whose exact nature remains elusive and whose devotees occupy a special school within Castalia known as Waldzell. The rules of the game are only alluded to—they are so sophisticated that they are not easy to imagine. Playing the game well requires years of hard study of music, mathematics, and cultural history. The game is essentially an abstract synthesis of all arts and sciences. It proceeds by players making deep connections between seemingly unrelated topics”.(from Wikipedia). This impression of similarity is reinforced by Wilczec’s ode to various elementary particles as avatars of corresponding symmetries on page 241.Wilczek’s book is well written, beautifully illustrated with images from the worlds of art and physics, and informative in the extreme. Not everyone will be able to follow everything, depending on their training in modern physics and fortitude, but everyone will be able to glean something from it about the search for physical reality over the years and about the world of modern physics.

Review

"Friedman takes his analysis into current time, where he argues that the social changes and media developments have allowed the entertainment aspects of the didactic theater to overshadow its informative aspects."—Reviews in American History"Engaging from the beginning, at both a theoretical and a very explicit, sometimes even sensational level. Thoughtful and though provoking."—Choice"Lawrence M. Friedman, our legal historian with the widest range, explains the great variety in courtroom and related events that have attracted our attention in American history. His book is a must for anyone who becomes absorbed in a high-profile trial."—Robert A. Ferguson, George Edward Woodberry Professor in Law, Literature, and Criticism at Columbia Law School and author of the author of The Trial in American Life "Witty and engagingly written, The Big Trial sheds important light on the social functions of 'headline trials' in American history, both before and during the age of mass media. Professor Friedman compellingly shows how big trials educate the public, impart moral messages, and above all, entertain us."—Samantha Barbas, author of The Laws of Image

I’m always amazed when I read press accounts of cases I have either tried, or am in the midst of trying: the reporter’s gloss rarely reflects the complexity of the proceeding. Often, what’s reported is just plain wrong. But the public appetite for trial news appears to be insatiable. Why? My theory is Freudian: Trial is where we take the seven deadly sins – wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony – and put them on display. We identify with the accused at criminal trials: His sins are ours, only writ large; we could have done the same. The defendant must be punished or our self-restraint is mocked. Of course there are exceptions to this theory: Sometimes we identify with the alleged victim, demanding relief for him or her as though we ourselves suffered the injury. Civilization is a complex mystery. It is no wonder our discontent leaks out in morbid preoccupation with the sorrows of others. Lawrence M. Friedman’s latest book, The Big Trial: Law As Public Spectacle, is a scholarly treatment of our fascination with trials. Although he doesn’t adopt the Freudian point of view, he doesn’t contradict it either. In Friedman’s view, big trials are part entertainment and part teaching -- or, as he puts it more times than I can count, “didactic” – exercises. The boundaries of community norms are explored at trial. We teach one another what is, and what is not, to be tolerated. Studying trials are also useful social history: “Arguments and strategies in jury trials are windows into social stereotypes and norms, into what people think and believe,” Friedman writes. “They can help show us which norms, ideas, and attitudes pack the most punch, at various points in history.” His discussion of the Lizzie Borden case – she was acquitted for the murder of her father and step-mother in 1892 Fall River, Massachusetts -- prompted chilling memories of a classmates of mine in Chicago standing on my doorstep to chant:“Lizzie Borden had an axeShe gave her mother 40 whacks,When she saw what she had doneShe gave her father 41.”How did the tale of this double-murder find its way from Massachusetts to Chicago half a century later? Did the poem’s power to terrify me have anything to do with the fact that my father had recently disappeared? I knew about Lizzie Borden in a personal way before I ever learned of the crimes with which she was charged. The Internet is changing trial coverage by the media. There are websites, such as WildAboutTrial.com, dedicated to nothing but coverage of high-profile cases. Daily newspapers struggle to meet the demand for coverage – depressed budgets requires reporters do more with less.Should trials be televised? I say not. Watching another lawyer try a case is, for me, like watching ice melt on a cool October morning – I just won’t do it. I suspect most trial watchers don’t really pay attention from gavel to gavel. Television is a distraction to the participants, sometimes intimidating witnesses, other times emboldening them to seek their fifteen minutes of fame from the stand. Remember Kato from O.J.’s case? I love Friedman’s books. He’s written previously on the criminal justice system and on prisons. He’s a careful researched and has a scholar’s love of explanatory footnotes. If you are fascinated about why and how some trials go viral, why the general public adopts other people’s troubles as their own, read this brief and insightful little book. I liked it so much I will re-read it soon.

Great!

Lawrence Friedman is perhaps the most respected, and certainly the most prolific, legal historian of our day. But he’s also a great storyteller; in fact, he writes detective fiction on the side. Not surprisingly then, The Big Trial makes for enjoyable reading even if one is skeptical of the author’s categorization of big trials as (for instance) “tabloid,” celebrity,” or “worm in the bud.”My own feeling is that big trials became big because they were (in the words of the Heath brothers) “sticky.” They combined aspects of simplicity, concreteness, and the unexpected in tales that could often be expounded at length and for profit. There’s little need for Friedman’s recourse to “suppressed desires” or “didactic theater” when big trials can be more easily explained by the rise of literacy, greatly expanded leisure time, and the opportunity for a host of people to make some money.
