Great in depth review of the first 500 years of the church and the traditions around the beginning of Christmas. This book is more academic than say Christmas: A Candid History, but if you enjoy the more detailed history and theological discussions, you will greatly enjoy this. Great read for those serious about their research.

I can't get enough of this kind of historical research. How we came to celebrate our modern holidays is fascinating and for me Christmas is the biggest of them all. Although the book spends a lot of time on Christian theology and biblical analysis, don't be put off by that. The author treats it as a historical source. The most interesting parts of the book are where the author adds in later texts, medieval sermons, chants, carols and traditions to illustrate the growth of this holiday through the sixth century. All in all a really good, easy read.

I bought this book in search of a text that would illuminate the history of Christmas as a sacred holiday in the church -- versus as a secular holiday (there are other good books on that topic). Kelly's book was a perfect fit for what I was seeking.Kelly recounts the history of the feast of the Nativity (Christmas) in the early church, examining the years from the end of the B.C. era through about the 6th century. He draws on scripture (the gospel accounts) as well as apocryphal literature to identify the sources of details for the modern day nativity story that we know. His discussion of identifying the date of Christ's birth is interesting and, frankly, really helpful for other Bible study efforts, as he explains the reckoning of time in ancient cultures. Really interesting stuff.I appreciated that the author drew not only on the canon, but on other sources, as well as taking a look at the culture of the day to explain how Christmas came to be celebrated. He illuminates the connection between Christmas and pagan winter celebrations without diminishing the significance of the Nativity.If you are interested in early Church history, particularly as it relates to Epiphany and the feast of the Nativity, you will find rich information in this text. If you are searching for the "meaning of Christmas" in the context of your Christian faith, this book may make you pause and reflect, and might possibly move you toward a richer and deeper experience of the holiday season.

While scholarly in nature, this book is not so dry that it can't appeal to the curious layman. In "The Origins of Christmas", the author gives us the historical origins of the date of the celebration of Christmas, the origins of many of the traditions surrounding Christmas (such as the names and nature of the 'wise men'), and some of the modern traditions (such as the Christmas tree) as well. Well written and well researched. An asset to the library not only of the biblical or Church scholar, but the curious layman as well.

This book contains a lot of stuff I didn't know. Perfect for history geeks of Early Christianity.

"The Origins Of Christmas" by Joseph F. Kelly, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota, 2004.This book covers exactly what the title says, "The Origins of Christmas". Professor Kelly presents the establishment of Christmas as an important feast day in the Christian Church, with both eastern and western roots. Drawing heavily on the scriptural nativity stories, found in the Gospels of St Mark and St. Luke, the author shows the roots of story of the Three Kings, then Star over Bethlehem, the Flight into Egypt and many more commonly held aspects of Christmas as the present age knows it. Using historical analysis, Dr. Kelly makes it clear that Christ was probably born between 6 B.C,. to 4 B.C., (based upon the records for the death of Herod) and that the ancient Church chose December 25th as the date for celebrating the Birth of Christ as a holy remedy to Roman extravaganzas in that month of the year. Kelly shows how Christmas and Epiphany developed as competing feast days for the Nativity of Christ in Orthodox Catholic and Roman Catholic branches of Christendom. He also devotes some little time to St. Nicholas and how that saint's feast day metamorphosed into a gift giving day in certain countries (e.g. The Netherlands).This is not, however, a book that deals with the tinsel: the origins of Christmas trees, or Christmas decorations or Christmas lights. Christmas carols are hardly mentioned, and the more modern aspects of Christmas, such Prince Albert's introduction of Christmas trees to England, are not emphasized in Kelly's book. If you want a bible-based analysis of the origins of Christmas, and how the biblical story grew into today's modern story of Christmas, then this is the book for you.

Other then the occasional Bohemian slang of the fifties, it still is as fresh as todays New York Times. Going through these verses took me back to days filled with youth, and the growing concern for where we would go and could we do any better than the last generation. This was a question that bothered many of the creative people during this time, certainly this was a type of hip poetry that reached a bit into the same bag as Ginsberg , Burroughs' and others of the "Beat Generation", the reason why this stayed fresher in my opinion, is it went beyond the hip to attract a whole audience to modern poetry.I was fortunate in a sense to be exposed to poetry in an early age, my father and I both had played with poetry in are creative formative years. I am sure it was WW II that ended his writing as much as Vietnam War an the holocaust that it was amidst ended mine.To anyone who may consider buying this work, this is a work that expanded Ferlinghetti's work to a new generation. It was cool enough for many in the 1960's bought it just to look cool as they walked through the halls of education. "I know this much, that any society that pays more attention to it's politicos than poets is one that is doomed to decay and destruction." This last line may be something I read or wrote, at my age so many of these things merge, but I do believe it is worth consideration, as it this volume. Watch out, I plan to review other American Poet's.

This book is the beginning of the beginning of the Beat Generation. Even though Ferlinghetti preferred to be considered a bohemian poet there is no denying his integral role in the upstart of the poetry of the Beat generation. It was Ferlinghetti whose City Lights publishing that published Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl and Other Poems' which almost got him in a lot of trouble as far as the whole obscenity trial. But what most peoele don't know is that it was Ferlinghetti's 'Pictures of the Gone World' and 'A Coney Island of the Mind', published before Ginsberg's 'Howl and Other Poems', that truly sparked the sea change in the literary world of the 1950s and forever.' I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the origins of Beat poetry. This amazing book is truly the beginning of the beginning.

a long time favorite and a classic that deserves a spot on every book shelf. I bought this copy to infect my most literate granddaughter with some of Ferlinghetti's wonderful word paintings. "the pennycandystore beyond the El is where I first fell in love with unreality" The man and the book is a treasure.

First purchased in paperback in the 60's, this went missing even as my brain, 50 years later, wanted to experience it again. The CD is lovely (driving around listening to Ferlinghetti read his poetry on your car CD player ... a mind blower, for sure), the book itself is perfectly reproduced ... what's not to love? The poems themselves might seem a little dated if you are stuck in your own time zone (as would Shakespeare, if he weren't Holy) ...but you know, there's a lot of interesting stuff going on here.

More beat stuff that hipsters love. I have one question, where’s the grit in any of this? Nowhere. I also HATE the formatting of this book. It messes with the cadence and flow of the reading of it, so much that it ruins the poems for me.However if you’re a fan of Jack Kerouac, then I highly suggest this book. You will adore it.

I read this book when it was first published. Everything in it struck a chord with me. I loved it. Now I am buying it for my granddaughter, who is about the age I was when I first came across it, and asked me about my beatnik days in North beach in the 1950s. What better picture of that era than this book? She loved it. I highly recommend it.

I personally am not a fan of poetry, but since I had recently become interested in Beat literature, I felt I must read this collection of poems by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The book is comprised of three sets of poems. In the first set is a rant against the absurdities of American culture. While I wouldn't consider myself an angry young man, I found this section to be quite refreshing.The second set of poems, an Oral Message, is meant to be read aloud with jazz accompaniment. These were written in the 50's so it's sort of like a precursor to rap. I think I would have enjoyed this much more if I had seen it performed live.The final 13 poems are from his first book and deal mostly with death.Like I said I am not a huge fan of poetry, and most of these poems were case of hit or miss. Most enjoyed a great deal, some I didn't understand at all. Sometimes it was just a case of line or phrase that I found inspiring, but over all I really did enjoy this collection.

Great book to learn about jeeping with a TJ. It covers all the basics and some of the advanced. Nice!

Too pricey, but does have a lot of good info and pictures. Four stars due to price.

The author has a TJ unlimited and uses it to help better understand the book. TJ/LJ....it's worth it. Also this was very recently published so the info is current and better suited for a mid-high mileage TJ.

Jeep TJ 1997-2006 How to Build and Modify is another great Cartech book. This performance how to is by Michael Hanssen and lives up to the expectations I have with all the Cartech series. Filled with tons of full color photos and specifications. Everything you need to upgrade and modify is included. This book includes everything from brakes, suspension, steering, lifts, and much much more. Definitely a great edition to any Jeep TJ owner or enthusiast.

All I can say is outstanding! I have read and used several CarTech books and this one would be at the top of the list for me. It was detailed and informative. As with of the CarTech books the pictures accompanying the text were useful and appropriate to the topics being discussed. It is chalk full of great advise for a Jeep enthusiast or someone considering a Jeep makeover.

This is a very good guide to building and modifying a Jeep TJ! It starts with the identification of the differences throughout the life cycle of the TJ, what to look for in a good off-road platform, and maybe most importantly the reality of a project vehicle in cost and time.The author touched on all of the major areas of the TJ, some of which are universal, generally speaking, such as winches, lighting, tools, etc…If you are looking to update and upgrade your TJ, this is the guide to help you.

Love this book. Makes my first buy at sheep, much less intimidating. Full of great information and easy to understand.

We have only skimmed it so far but looks invaluable. Our local vets know little about sheep so this book should really come in handy.

I have raised Babydoll sheep since 2008. Over the years I've bought various books on sheep and this one is the best so far. Definitely a MUST have for a novice!!

Anyone who can make both the left and the right wingers angry is likely speaking truth to those in power. This book is extremely well-researched. It presents a balanced history of poverty in America and explains why both political extremes have no answer for solving the poverty program. His makes a persuasive case for why trying to raise taxes on the rich and simply handing over money to the poor will never solve the poverty problem (in the sense of eliminating poverty as opposed to alleviating its harms). Little progress has been made towards the goal of ending poverty since LBJ announced a national "War on Poverty." But he also takes conservatives to task for believing that all that is needed is hard work and following simple rules. (Donald Trump would choose not to work if he faced the marginal tax rates that many poor people face if they are making use of current government antipoverty programs). He makes a strong case that the trillions of dollars we have spent trying to win the war on poverty has merely institutionalized poverty. And unfortunately a huge bureaucracy that only exists because of poverty really has little interest in seeing poverty eliminated!What will be most challenging for readers is Tanner's prescription for truly ending poverty, which would begin with ending another sham "war" declared by another president - Nixon's "war on drugs." Here we have trillions more dollars spent with little success in stopping people from using their drug of choice.For anyone truly interested in understanding what would be required to end poverty in America. this book is a must-read. But it must be approached with an open mind, because its analysis and recommendations will be challenging to any on the right or left who already thinks they "know" all the answers. Libertarians though should take heart!

This book begins with a series of admissions that may shock some conservatives. Poverty is a real problem in this country, and for those affected it hurts. The trillions of dollars that have been plowed into the “War on Poverty” that was declared by LBJ in 1964 have alleviated poverty to some extent – even the federal government couldn’t spend that much money without getting something for it. And a good deal of history is cited to show that governments (as distinguished from churches and private charity) have been intervening to help the poor for many years, e.g., as by the English Parliament’s passage of the Poor Law in 1601.What are the causes of poverty. Does this condition simply show that some people are less capable of competing in the economy than others, or are cultural factors at work that put certain segments of the population at a disadvantage. Again, Tanner seemingly comes on down the liberal side of the argument. Racial repression is real and the rules of society were long rigged against women (yes, there have been some big changes, but single women are still more at risk of being poor than men are). So don’t bother arguing that it’s time to abolish the welfare state, because such a course would be morally bankrupt (and political suicide for conservatives).Tanner rejects the notion, however, that the government should seek to end poverty once and for all. Utopia is not an option, poverty reflects individual life choices as well as societal factors, poverty can never be fully eliminated. Also, economic growth has been the engine that permitted the United States and other developed nations to lift the majority of the population out of poverty, and we certainly don’t want to risk “killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.” It would be better to be unequally rich than equally poor.Given skyrocketing deficits and debt, it’s hard to believe that the US should spend even more on welfare programs than the $1 trillion per year (federal + state) that it is spending already.. And while one could argue that welfare for the poor is more important than entitlement programs (Social Security, Medicare, etc.) for the general population, the idea of eliminating the entitlement programs (as opposed to hopefully making them more affordable) is a nonstarter. Also, there is some merit in arguments that existing welfare programs treat the symptoms of poverty without helping the people concerned to improve their fortunes (or at least the fortunes of their children) through their own efforts.Some welfare program reforms are discussed, which hopefully will be pursued in an effort to get “more bang for the buck.” Combine the plethora of programs (some 100 or more) into a much smaller number - convert “in kind” benefits to cash benefits (giving the recipients more power to make optimal choices based on their specific circumstances) - make the welfare system more transparent and simpler to navigate. But at the end of the day, none of these ideas is likely to be a real game changer.The book moves on to a series of libertarian ideas that would attack some root causes of poverty without attempting to address the problem by spending more and more money. Criminal justice reform (at all stages, starting by criminalizing fewer offenses) – educational reform (promote more choice and competition vs. pouring more money into a monolithic public school system) – rethink laws that are driving up housing costs (especially for the poor) – find ways to permit the poor to accumulate savings (notably private accounts for the payroll taxes they are compelled to pay into Social Security) - prune or eliminate taxes and regulations that are curbing economic growth.Overall assessment: Excellent research, presents a lot of ideas that aren’t obviously related until Tanner points out the connections. Sensible, balanced conclusions. I plan to keep the book in my library for future reference.

This book should be required reading for everyone studying or interested in economics. These easy solution to most problems is more money but that is not always possible nor the most effective or efficient solution. I do not agree with everything the author recommends but he does make very strong arguments with extensive research and supporting data. I would add one observation that I think should have been included and that is you will never be successful or accumulate wealth if you are dependent on government safety net programs.

This is an excellent book! It presents a balanced view based on research. It is as nonpartisan as writing can be about such a politically divisive topic. The approach to poverty that is suggested has real potential for improving the lives of so many people ...and not just the poor. The writing is straightforward and simple, but not simplistic. If you have a book club that reads non-fiction, this book should generate an excellent discussion. Thank you, Michael D. Tanner.

The author, much like modern astrophysicists like C. Sagan and L. Krauss might describe space ("billions and billions..."), has quite a way with words. He embeds in the reader a sense of wonder, and of amazement, at the magic that happens when you listen to music. If you're an audiophile who does not have an over inflated view of yourself and has a generally open mind about music, then this book is for you. I am not educated in this field whatsoever, and I found the analogies, comparisons, and even the really "dense" material very enticing and interesting.I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the statements and claims the author makes because I am not educated in this field. He could be completely wrong and pushing his own agenda (although it's a little hard to arrive at that conclusion unless you have some sort of raging superiority complex). But that kind of conversation, which fills many of the lower rated reviews, is missing the point.The language, the examples, the ranges of simple description to complicated extrapolation, it is all nourishing. These are interesting things to think about. And for a layman like myself, the point is not to be right, but to be interested. After reading this book, I don't care if he's right (although I doubt his inaccuracies, if any, surmount to much). I just care that he made me think about music in a new and interesting way.And for the average reader like myself, that is all you should want from a book like this.

This is sn excellent, well-written book on a topic that deserves more attention—the interaction between human brains and music, as informed by science. This is the most current book on this topic as I write. The second-most-recent book is 20 years older, and at the present rate of advance in brain science, that is a long time. Other reviewers have complained that the author drops too many names. I disagree. His first career, before he went back to school and got his Ph.D, was as a recording engineer. It is not name-dropping when you know famed singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell on a first-name basis, have discussed musical details of recording her while doing it, and then have later interviewed her about relevant topics in this book. This is by no means the only such useful example this unusual writer provides. The book does have an uneven feel to it in some spots, because it slows down to take you, like a fly on the wall, to unexpected places, but these are worth going to. I happen to know the science of some of what Levitin discusses, as I worked in computer speech recognition for five years, built two labs, and have a couple of published papers from that work. On what I know, Levitin is spot-on accurate. He also provides thorough notes and references if you want to dig deeper. But he also is a very good explainer, which I really appreciated when he discussed music. All in all this is a fine introduction. If it has any weakness, it is that he does not try to organize and categorize as much as he could have, but he WILL keep you reading!

I recently started music therapy for my son with autism and this book explains why I think it is so good for him. Autism means "splinter skills" and sometimes I am surprised at what he can (and, sadly, can't do). When he was much younger he was good at math, almost grade level until he suffered a concussion. But I feel music therapy is bringing back some of that pattern recognition and decoding and he has begun to be able to read musical notes to play piano and change chords on the ukulele. It is so joyful and this book inspires me to help him practice more in between biweekly sessions with a trained therapist.Music therapy gives me new hope that he can still learn and grow even after his academic progress has stalled.The author has such an interesting background music combined with neuroscience. I loved his other book too entitled "The Organized Mind" ... Dan Levitin has a way of making me feel completely normal that my brain feels often on the verge of exploding as it tries to cope with modern life.... I love how the author EXPLAINS why playing/practicing music/listening to music clapping hands to a good rhythm, singing in unison, watching a familiar old musical or a newer one like La la Land is so helpful(relaxing, energizing, calming, whatever mood I seek, there's a song for it. this book is full of interesting music trivia and he uses great examples of familiar songs so you immediately get his points on how songs are written and why we like some more than others, get some stuck in our heads and others are nails on chalkboard based on our own tastes/experiences ... so interesting how the "younger generation" has been rebelling against parents but also rediscovering and enjoying prior generations' music as well.A great read that literally plays music in your head. An Ode to Joy.

This is a great book. I read it 3 times in the first week that I had it. It is gripping and interesting, and remarkably jargon-free. Some of my non-musical friends who borrowed it said that they did not enjoy it and that it was too complicated for them to understand. I have some music theory education which was helpful for understanding the book, but Levitin makes it possible for non-musicians to appreciate the book too. With that being said, it is not written for children. There is a long, complicated part of the book which focuses intensely on the neuroscience part. I found it interesting and easy enough to understand as I am interested in neuroscience and have spent many hours educating myself about it on the internet. Most of my friends did not find this part engaging. I recommend this book to musicians, neuroscientists, and anyone who finds the human mind interesting.

This is an amazing book set. This series will keep you on your toes and you will not want it to end.Cursed - This book is amazing. It is filled with romance, love, friendship, heartache, forgiveness, and some surprises you never would have seen. I love the love story between Lilly and Brand. Lilly is amazing girl with wonderful friends and family. The supporting characters in this book really complement the main characters which was a pleasure to read. As a reader I like supporting characters to have as many strong traits as the main characters. I definitely found this in "Cursed" with Utha Mae, Tara, Will, Abby, and Malcolm.Blessed - In the continuation of Lilly and Brand’s story, “Blessed” brings out many emotions and tugs on your heartstrings. It is a well written and enjoyable middle book of the series. For me sometimes the middle book of a trilogy can be a bit boring, kind of like a middle movie. Blessed wasn’t. It drew my attention from the beginning and had me biting my nails during the intense parts. Brand became even more swoon worthy and Malcolm so much more endearing. Lilly becomes stronger and more confident as she adjusts to all that happens in her life in a short period of time. There are more supporting characters introduced – some you’ll love, others will have your skin crawling.Forgiven - Wow what an ending of an incredible trilogy. “Forgiven”, book three of The Watchers Trilogy by S. J. West, is a ride of emotions. You will feel everything that the characters go through and it is totally worth it. Lilly and Brand are amazing duo and with the faith in each other and in God fights to the end with the final battle with Lucifer. The supporting characters, Malcolm, Will, Tara, Utha Mae, and even Cora, Lilly’s mother become stronger characters in this final book. As a reader you really develop a sense of forgiveness, loyalty, family strength, and love in this book.S. J. West did an amazing job with the Watcher’s Trilogy. Don’t miss this series.

Loved this series! If you love reading books about Fallen Angels and them find love again. I would read this!Cursed: Loved this book from beginning to end. Lilly is an amazing character. She is down to earth and has regular girl problems like any other girl. Wish I had a friend like Tara she is crazy but so protective of Lilly. It's the type of friendship any girl would love to have with someone. I had my ups and downs with Will but I'm glad he is just friends with Lilly. Brand oh man I love Bran he is so perfect. I wish I could have someone like him. But Malcolm yum. I loved all the characters and can't wait to read the next book to see what happens with all of them.Blessed: I got a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.Wow I couldn't put this book down. I had to keep reading do I could find out more about Lilly and what she could be. I loved seeing Brand and Lilly's relationship grow. Now I can't figure out if I love Malcolm or Brand more. If you read cursed and haven't read this you need too. A lot more information is learned can't wait to read the next book.Forgiven: Omg wow! So much happened in this idk where to begin. This was such an amazing series. I laughed, cried, and smiled so much in this book. I still can't get over how it ended. I'm so happy with how everything turned out for Brand and Lily. Loved how at one point you thought something was going to happen but then it ended up being something completely different then what you thought. I can't wait to read more about the others. The best word I can use to describe my experience reading this series is 'conflicted'. I say that because there were so many times when I could do nothing but roll my eyes at some of the scenes that took place in this book. Much of it was lacking a lot of body, things happened too quickly and much of the story line was very tweenish. However, I also couldn't stop reading because I just HAD to know how the series would end. What was so special about Lilly that made all the other Watchers desire her so?The quick and instant attraction and "love" that developed between Lilly and Brand was boring and I found myself forever rooting for the old flame and childhood best friend, Will to find Lilly's heart again but it just never seemed to happen. Heck, I even started to hope that maybe Malcom would end up stealing her away. Brand was just too perfect and far too boring.The degree of cheese and common high school drama was also a lot of take in and yet there was a multitude of sexual tension brought out via the many, many makeout sessions that it was obvious this book was intended for an older audience.So, conflicted it was although I doubt I would recommend the series to any of my fellows or read it again myself other than that, it wasn't too bad.

This is an EXCELLENT read. Thank goodness it's a boxed set as I devoured the books!!!!! Lilly discovers she's not an ordinary girl and that humans are not the only ones occupying the earth. Angels, Demons, the Fae.... and everything/ everyone seems to be drawn/ centred around her! Something catastrophic is going to happen and she could be the cause... Can she prevent it..... Friendship and True Love is what keeps Lilly sane. As you read this book, the story unfolds before you in Technicolor. The author has you on the edge of your seat in anticipation of what will transpire.

The story was good and I enjoyed reading it. I wasn't happy about the fact that I read three books and still didn't reach the end of the story...technically. Essentially, without giving anything any, the world starts to end at the end of the third book but you don't know what happens unless you start reading some other series of books. And, from what I gather, the majority of people in these three books don't carry over into this other series AND the ones that do carry over, only make brief appearances. But, overall I enjoyed the writing and the building of the characters.
