The Title is a little misleading, it says "Lessons in Masterful..." but it is not a set of lessons (like many of the Atelier books out there), but more of Yim's philosophy of drawing. In chapter two, he does go through his entire process, but it is a very broad overview. He never goes into details on how to actually draw, so if you are getting this to learn to draw, it is not for you. In fact, if you have watched the Fine Art Academy videos on YouTube, its pretty much a book version of that. The rest of the book is just more or less a repetition of the same thing; examples of Yim's work and a quick overview of his approach to each. While there are some tidbits in there (such as only using straight lines to block in) that are helpful, overall, this book appears to just be a quick product to sell Yim's work.Yet, that is the saving grace, and why I'm giving it four stars (instead of two for false advertising). The artwork is amazing. Even the block-ins that he demonstrates are beautiful, and the pictures are very large and very good reproductions. As an art book, it is easily worth the price.Bottom line, if you are looking for a real lesson book with detailed instruction, there are much better options available. However, if you enjoy drawing portraits and you are just looking for something to give you inspiration, or you are a fan of pencil portraiture, this book is well worth the money.

I have many books on drawing, in particular on drawing portraits, and this one is the best. Mau-Kun Yim's portrati drawings are stunning. He explains the stages he goes through clearly and thoroughly, with photos of the drawings at different stages. It's fascinating and useful, and has helped me improve tremendously with my own portrait drawings. Highly, highly recommended.

It's a different approach than some portrait artists, which is a good thing. No technique is best. There is no holy grail for artists. It all depends on what works for the person reading it. While not 100% behind all the techniques in this book, I did find some valuable nuggets of info. At times the author/artist's tone was condescending and arrogant which was distracting, especially when all it seemed like he was trying to do was to elevate his own technique and style. So if you can ignore that pompous attitude, which I did (but often found myself muttering under my breath indignantly), it's underlying info is valuable. Could be edited better for those reasons.

I purchased this book several months ago and have been consulting it for advice and inspiration. I thoroughly enjoyed Mau-Kun Yim's philosophy and approach to drawing the portrait, particularly on how he broke down the concepts and related everything to building a house, i.e. from blueprint, foundation, all the way to finishing. I also appreciate how he emphasized the importance of re-discovering the traditional principles of proportion, anatomy, perspective, light, and value - and that drawing is also painting without color. I also like that he showed step-by-step demonstrations of portraits of certain individuals wherein he shares nuggets of information regarding the type of pencil to use at different stages, planar and linear advice, transitions, and the like.Over all I think that it is a very inspirational and good book, one that does not focus heavily on the "technicalities" of constructing a head, but rather the "essentials" and the motivations behind drawing the portrait. I wish Mr. Mau-Kun Yim would also write a similar book on oil painting and mixing colors. I would definitely purchase one if he did!

This is an amazingly beautiful book: excellence on every page by a master artist sharing drawing secrets worthy of the Old Masters. Mau-Kun YIM is inspiring. The "Drawing is a form of construction" section is illuminating. The book is also a father-daughter labor of love and the final Gallery of Drawings in pencil and charcoal features a stunning range of faces... breathtaking!-Ana

"Portrait Drawing" by Yim mau-Kun & Iris YimThis book presents solid instruction by a recognized master in portraiture. It is clear, concise, easy to follow and, unusually for a book on this subject, entertaining to read. Yim mau-Kun's many years as an instructor as well as a master artist are well presented, and Iris Yim's excellent interpretation is lively and clear. The demonstrations are easy to understand, and memorable. The examples of his work, in themselves, are worth the reasonable price of the book. "Portrait Drawing" would be of value to any artist at any stage of development. We are fortunate to have such a commanding talent, still working today, willing to share his knowledge.

I love The step by step development of a portrait, written in a prose that is direct but oddly eloquent. I appreciate the very direct instructions, like “start the detail work with the nose”, the admonition to treat each phase of the drawing without anticipating too much, what needs to be done next. The advise to focus on the task at hand, to think first in simple line, then form, then planes, then light and dark.

This book isn't for amateur artist, I think you need to have some type of artistic eye in applying some of the principles outlined in this book. Having said that, this book lays down the fundamental steps in approaching portrait design and drawing in general. The author provides a fine art approach to drawing, with plenty of step by step examples and images to support. What's also great is the image gallery in the second half of the book, showcasing both portrait and figure drawing. A great guide to portrait drawing, and as mentioned in the book, practice makes perfect.

Overall, this is an excellent introduction to the subject material. The author covers some basic electronics topics and gives a very down to earth discussion of various amplifier stages and the pertinent characteristics of their operation. For the do-it-yourself amp builder this is a great introduction. The text is full of practical advice and pointers to help the reader achieve a successful design.However, this is a practical text aimed at the hobbyist or electronic tinkerer. Do not go looking for in depth theory or detailed mathematical analysis here, you won't find it. The electronic hobbyist will find a wealth of practical information but a trained electrical engineer risks being put off by the lack of in depth analysis and numerous broad assumptions made while discussing design. Some chapters are much better then others. It is much more informative to address them separately.The first chapter is a basic introduction to electronic principles for both passive and simple active devices. This is probably a good refresher for the hobbyist or tinkerer, but anyone trained in electronics or electrical engineering can safely skip the first chapter. Chapter two gives a very good discussion of the basic building blocks of tube circuits. This is arguably the best chapter in the book. The content of this chapter alone is worth the price of the text. Chapter three is a discussion of distortion in tube amplifiers. This chapter contains lots of practical information, but little detailed theory. This is good information for the hobbyist but the engineer will find the lack of rigorous analysis frustrating. Chapter four covers components. The chapter covers some basic information on various types of the different passive components and a very interesting discussion of tube construction. If you're new to vacuum tube technology the latter half of this chapter is a must read. Chapter five is a discussion of power supplies. The best advice I can give on this chapter is don't read it. The author clearly has made many measurements and done much experimenting. However, the conclusions he draws tend to be very misleading. The problem with this chapter is that the hobbyist will be mislead into bad design decisions and the trained electrical engineer will be frustrated with the conclusions drawn. I have been shocked by the incredible number of truly abhorrent power supply designs floating around the internet. Chapter five of this book explains where some of the ideas for these supplies have come. There are much better texts discussing power supply design for tube circuits. For a good practical guide to power supply design, try Chapter 14 of "Theory and Applications of Electron Tubes", by Herbert Reich. Chapter six is a discussion of amplifier power stages. The text covers the basics of single ended and push pull operation and then goes on to discuss several different designs. This chapter contains lots of good practical information. Be warned however, the author is clearly of the "push-pull" camp and if you tend to favor the "single ended" designs, prepared to be insulted. The book finishes up with a chapter on preamplifiers and line stages. Included here are some good discussion on RIAA equalization. If your interest goes beyond the power amp to the entire audio chain, this chapter is very informative.Even as a career electrical engineer I gained significant information and insight by reading this book. It refreshed my knowledge of tube circuits and if I had this book when I was building tube amps in High school in 1980, my success rate would have been significantly higher. Overall this is a excellent text despite the flaws mentioned above. Whether degreed Electrical Engineer or avid hobbyist working on building tube amplifiers, this text is a worthwhile addition to your technical library.

This book is supposed to be highly recommended. I am very disappointed. I don't expect this book get deep into theory as you can use RDH4 for that. But I do expect the book should compare different circuit topologies, analyze the strong and weak point, distortion characteristics under different operating conditions so people can make a better decision. But this book has very little of that. Problem is there are very few books on tubes as it's not popular. You might get just as much if not more info by searching on the web.

I wish I had this book decades ago. It covers everything from internals of tubes/valves to circuit design. I have an EE degree and we learned some design, but not practical problems. It also covers some transistor circuits.

The second edition of this book was the first book on tube amps I ever read. I borrowed it from the local library. I can not say that I understood all the concepts then, but for some reason whenever I had returned the book to the library there was something I had to look up, so I bought the third edition.There are not very many good tube books out there, you can believe me because I have read everything from the 1956 RCA tube manual to most of the modern books on the subject.This book is not perfect. It has the tendency to hide a lot of information in the text instead of making a clear presentation from point A to point B. It assumes that you have read all the preceding chapters and have them fresh in your head because there are explanations on things in chapter 13 that is based on stuff in chapter 3 with no references what so ever.That said, I think this is probably the best place to start. It has lots of information that is relatively easy to grasp.If you are more interested in guitar amplifiers, then I would not recommend you to start with this book. It has all the basic information you need to design a guitar amplifier, so it is not bad reading, but I would recommend you to buy "The Ultimate Tone" series (probably start with volume 3)by Kevin O`Connor instead. Because it explains more of the guitar concepts, such as how to make distortion sound good.If you want to design tube amplifiers I recommend this book. Even though I have many tube books this is the one I always come back to when I want to look something up.

I haven't touched electronics for 35 years, so I embarked on this book with a bit of trepidation. In fact, I can't put it down. Everything Morgan says makes sense, and he leads you in a very structured way in putting together all of the building blocks that go together in designing an amplifier.

Tons of great info. Helped me build my kt77 amp and 12au7 preamp.

Beyond my expectations in details, but targeted to hi fi tube amplifiers. Many details on amps circuits, tricks, do and don'ts and not for ones that looking for guitar amps. Eng. Fernando

Here's the good news: this book is only talking about big law and, as the book points out, only 15% of lawyers in the country practice in big law. So while it's true, as the book points out, that many if not most law schools lie about your prospects for getting a job, 85% of the legal world is NOT composed of lawyers in big law. This means that if you want to practice law and you want to help people there are plenty of places for you in the profession and there are any number of books and mentors who can teach you how to run a business of the practice of law.That being said, it's really dumb today to get yourself in debt by going to "famous" law schools in hopes of being in that 15%. This book should be mandatory readying for those applying to law school - not to scare you off from a great profession, but to make sure your eyes are wide open about about the lie of riches in big law firms.for most of you aspiring lawyers you will be much better off finding a reasonably priced law school, taking some business classes along the way, and figuring out how to help people, make money and have a good quality of life. There are thousands of lawyers across the United States who are leading THAT life today.

Anybody in or around the legal profession knows that there are too many law school graduates, with too few skills, vying for too few legal jobs. Some of those graduates aren't so new anymore either, having graduated years ago. At the same time, the pyramid scheme that was Big Law is collapsing as the professional services economy changes for lawyers, as it is for everybody else (physicians, consultants, etc.) The book, however, offers mostly opinion, anecdote and amateur data to support its points and thesis. It's an interesting read, but the writing is mediocre. Most important, the author fails to consider his thesis in the context of the overall professional services economy: It's changing for everybody. A better read would be one that addresses what the future of the legal profession looks like and why (for example, law firms as companies that produce legal services (like modern physician practices), more lawyers using legal skill sets in non legal jobs, etc.)

It has a lot of solid points but this book is primarily focused on "big firm" problems, which is fine as far as it goes. It doesn't go very far in several other directions, where most American lawyers practice. It really doesn't touch much on solo and small firm life. From Legal Zoom reducing the need for lawyers, to increased tort reform limiting incomes, it completely misses the total failure of the ABA and most State Bars to protect the interests of MOST of their members on these fronts---as well as the inherent conflict this lack of State Bar representation creates between mega firms and solos. It also doesn't address the law school tuition problem: Every year there is still an army of people who take the LSAT and going on to Law School at places where they will have little to no chance of getting a high paying job upon graduation. But it's an excellent start. Bravo.

I think I agree with other reviewers - I wish the author had been more concise. He repeated himself more often than necessary. Also, other than law school, the author only talks about big law, which as he often points out is only 15% of lawyers. It would have been good to hear more about other parts of the profession.

Fantastic book that should be required reading for any law firm managing partner, board or management committee member at a firm of more than 25 lawyers. It's bad news for most, but an amazing opportunity for those willing to make the tough cultural changes and put clients first--and not just claim that on their web sites...

Prof. Harper’s book clearly states that the legal profession is big trouble because the law schools are simply pumping out more lawyers than needed. The data he complied and presented is clear and compelling evidence that the law school industry is failing its customers, the students. Moreover, he makes and wins the argument that the traditional three year academic focused law school curriculum is completely out of touch with the realities and needs of the actual workplace. The book should not dissuade anyone from seeking a legal education if they really want to be an attorney, but rather, a student needs to obtain some practical skills before graduating if he or she wants a decent paying job upon employment.

Great in depth review of the first 500 years of the church and the traditions around the beginning of Christmas. This book is more academic than say Christmas: A Candid History, but if you enjoy the more detailed history and theological discussions, you will greatly enjoy this. Great read for those serious about their research.

I can't get enough of this kind of historical research. How we came to celebrate our modern holidays is fascinating and for me Christmas is the biggest of them all. Although the book spends a lot of time on Christian theology and biblical analysis, don't be put off by that. The author treats it as a historical source. The most interesting parts of the book are where the author adds in later texts, medieval sermons, chants, carols and traditions to illustrate the growth of this holiday through the sixth century. All in all a really good, easy read.

I bought this book in search of a text that would illuminate the history of Christmas as a sacred holiday in the church -- versus as a secular holiday (there are other good books on that topic). Kelly's book was a perfect fit for what I was seeking.Kelly recounts the history of the feast of the Nativity (Christmas) in the early church, examining the years from the end of the B.C. era through about the 6th century. He draws on scripture (the gospel accounts) as well as apocryphal literature to identify the sources of details for the modern day nativity story that we know. His discussion of identifying the date of Christ's birth is interesting and, frankly, really helpful for other Bible study efforts, as he explains the reckoning of time in ancient cultures. Really interesting stuff.I appreciated that the author drew not only on the canon, but on other sources, as well as taking a look at the culture of the day to explain how Christmas came to be celebrated. He illuminates the connection between Christmas and pagan winter celebrations without diminishing the significance of the Nativity.If you are interested in early Church history, particularly as it relates to Epiphany and the feast of the Nativity, you will find rich information in this text. If you are searching for the "meaning of Christmas" in the context of your Christian faith, this book may make you pause and reflect, and might possibly move you toward a richer and deeper experience of the holiday season.

While scholarly in nature, this book is not so dry that it can't appeal to the curious layman. In "The Origins of Christmas", the author gives us the historical origins of the date of the celebration of Christmas, the origins of many of the traditions surrounding Christmas (such as the names and nature of the 'wise men'), and some of the modern traditions (such as the Christmas tree) as well. Well written and well researched. An asset to the library not only of the biblical or Church scholar, but the curious layman as well.

This book contains a lot of stuff I didn't know. Perfect for history geeks of Early Christianity.

"The Origins Of Christmas" by Joseph F. Kelly, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota, 2004.This book covers exactly what the title says, "The Origins of Christmas". Professor Kelly presents the establishment of Christmas as an important feast day in the Christian Church, with both eastern and western roots. Drawing heavily on the scriptural nativity stories, found in the Gospels of St Mark and St. Luke, the author shows the roots of story of the Three Kings, then Star over Bethlehem, the Flight into Egypt and many more commonly held aspects of Christmas as the present age knows it. Using historical analysis, Dr. Kelly makes it clear that Christ was probably born between 6 B.C,. to 4 B.C., (based upon the records for the death of Herod) and that the ancient Church chose December 25th as the date for celebrating the Birth of Christ as a holy remedy to Roman extravaganzas in that month of the year. Kelly shows how Christmas and Epiphany developed as competing feast days for the Nativity of Christ in Orthodox Catholic and Roman Catholic branches of Christendom. He also devotes some little time to St. Nicholas and how that saint's feast day metamorphosed into a gift giving day in certain countries (e.g. The Netherlands).This is not, however, a book that deals with the tinsel: the origins of Christmas trees, or Christmas decorations or Christmas lights. Christmas carols are hardly mentioned, and the more modern aspects of Christmas, such Prince Albert's introduction of Christmas trees to England, are not emphasized in Kelly's book. If you want a bible-based analysis of the origins of Christmas, and how the biblical story grew into today's modern story of Christmas, then this is the book for you.

Very thorough, new favorite to reread each Christmas.

This book really digs into the history of how Christmas as we know it now came to be. It's a short book, but not a fast read- a lot of history to absorb and consider. Very interesting for the secular and religious alike!

Other then the occasional Bohemian slang of the fifties, it still is as fresh as todays New York Times. Going through these verses took me back to days filled with youth, and the growing concern for where we would go and could we do any better than the last generation. This was a question that bothered many of the creative people during this time, certainly this was a type of hip poetry that reached a bit into the same bag as Ginsberg , Burroughs' and others of the "Beat Generation", the reason why this stayed fresher in my opinion, is it went beyond the hip to attract a whole audience to modern poetry.I was fortunate in a sense to be exposed to poetry in an early age, my father and I both had played with poetry in are creative formative years. I am sure it was WW II that ended his writing as much as Vietnam War an the holocaust that it was amidst ended mine.To anyone who may consider buying this work, this is a work that expanded Ferlinghetti's work to a new generation. It was cool enough for many in the 1960's bought it just to look cool as they walked through the halls of education. "I know this much, that any society that pays more attention to it's politicos than poets is one that is doomed to decay and destruction." This last line may be something I read or wrote, at my age so many of these things merge, but I do believe it is worth consideration, as it this volume. Watch out, I plan to review other American Poet's.

This book is the beginning of the beginning of the Beat Generation. Even though Ferlinghetti preferred to be considered a bohemian poet there is no denying his integral role in the upstart of the poetry of the Beat generation. It was Ferlinghetti whose City Lights publishing that published Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl and Other Poems' which almost got him in a lot of trouble as far as the whole obscenity trial. But what most peoele don't know is that it was Ferlinghetti's 'Pictures of the Gone World' and 'A Coney Island of the Mind', published before Ginsberg's 'Howl and Other Poems', that truly sparked the sea change in the literary world of the 1950s and forever.' I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the origins of Beat poetry. This amazing book is truly the beginning of the beginning.

a long time favorite and a classic that deserves a spot on every book shelf. I bought this copy to infect my most literate granddaughter with some of Ferlinghetti's wonderful word paintings. "the pennycandystore beyond the El is where I first fell in love with unreality" The man and the book is a treasure.

First purchased in paperback in the 60's, this went missing even as my brain, 50 years later, wanted to experience it again. The CD is lovely (driving around listening to Ferlinghetti read his poetry on your car CD player ... a mind blower, for sure), the book itself is perfectly reproduced ... what's not to love? The poems themselves might seem a little dated if you are stuck in your own time zone (as would Shakespeare, if he weren't Holy) ...but you know, there's a lot of interesting stuff going on here.

More beat stuff that hipsters love. I have one question, where’s the grit in any of this? Nowhere. I also HATE the formatting of this book. It messes with the cadence and flow of the reading of it, so much that it ruins the poems for me.However if you’re a fan of Jack Kerouac, then I highly suggest this book. You will adore it.

I read this book when it was first published. Everything in it struck a chord with me. I loved it. Now I am buying it for my granddaughter, who is about the age I was when I first came across it, and asked me about my beatnik days in North beach in the 1950s. What better picture of that era than this book? She loved it. I highly recommend it.

I hadn't read this since high school which was a lifetime ago and it's just as good and relevant today

I personally am not a fan of poetry, but since I had recently become interested in Beat literature, I felt I must read this collection of poems by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The book is comprised of three sets of poems. In the first set is a rant against the absurdities of American culture. While I wouldn't consider myself an angry young man, I found this section to be quite refreshing.The second set of poems, an Oral Message, is meant to be read aloud with jazz accompaniment. These were written in the 50's so it's sort of like a precursor to rap. I think I would have enjoyed this much more if I had seen it performed live.The final 13 poems are from his first book and deal mostly with death.Like I said I am not a huge fan of poetry, and most of these poems were case of hit or miss. Most enjoyed a great deal, some I didn't understand at all. Sometimes it was just a case of line or phrase that I found inspiring, but over all I really did enjoy this collection.
