This was a funny purchase. I actually received PC for Dummies circa 2002. What the???? Some poor soul doing the picking did send me a dummy book that started with the letter 'P' but that's not very close to my intended study of PERL script. The vendor processed my return very nicely and we both had a chuckle over the mix up. The correct book was sent to me. Yes it took longer than I had planned to get the book I wanted, but kudos to the vendor's good attitude. As for the PERL for Dummies book. I've worked through most of the chapters. I would not depend on this PERL book alone for study. If, like me, you are coming to PERL as a non programmer seeking to understand what is running and why, then it is informative at best. Not compendious. Not over narrow. A good blend of information that will help you move on to the weightier tomes on the subject.

I bought this book hoping to expand my knowledge of Internet programming. Having never read a Perl tutorial before in my life, I was clinging to the concept of luck that I would come out with a great book rather than one to take the hassle of returning. Not only did I come out with a great book, but I came out with a great introduction, explanation, and tutorial of the Perl language, but also a VERY useful reference source. I would never have regretted purchasing this book for an instant. The author covers many of the necessary aspects of the language thoroughly, leaving me with a clear understanding of this great programming tool. The only part that could have been covered better was DBM and relational databases, although I know that that was not one of the targets of this book as a tutorial, it would have come in handy as a reference. I strongly recommend this to any one looking for a solid introduction/reference to this great language, and also to any one with previous experience in Perl. It comes in great as a reference, and you might even learn something new!

Great beginner book for someone just getting their feet wet into Perl. The book does cover some basic stuff, but more important things can be learned online using perl and cpan network. But its a good starting point.

If you are new to Perl, this book will give you a great place to start from with the basics to more advanced topics. If you are a series Perl programmer/scripter then this book may not be for you.

I got this as a back-up for "Learning Perl" and it serves well enough: it gives a somewhat different author's viewpoint, which is always welcome.

The book is well written and useful. I've a need to write scripts anddo some coding in my job. I feel that this book will help me get past some of the disconnects, in my way of thinking, when it comes to programming. As a Hardware designer I can understand a piece of logic. But I've often struggled with interpretting or writing my own code.

Great read and recommend for those new to the subject

Don’t be put off by the title; while the book does give you an insight into the engineering wonder that is the Brooklyn Bridge as executed, day by day, under Washington Roebling’s exacting eye and enormous capacity for detail, “Chief Engineer” is also the poignant, heart-rendering and always captivating story of “one man’s tenacity in the fact of hardship beyond most people’s imagining.” Fortunately, Erica Wagner has beautifully done the imaging for use: Washington Roebling and his life stand forth as much itself an enduring monument to the human spirit’s capacity to journey through adversity to the stars as the great work that still stands as Wagner writes, “ an extraordinary symbol of nineteenth-century ideals of progress.” This is biography, science and cultural history in one cover. The book answers beautifully Hart Crane’s question in his great poem “The Bridge,” “How could mere toil align thy choiring strings!”

This was an extremely interesting book. The structure was very clear as the narrative was divided around Roebling's early life, his service in the Civil War, and then the stages of his career. I found it fascinating how his father designed the wire and then, as an entrepreneur, father and son leveraged the business from bridges to elevators and beyond. Their contribution to business, ingenuity, and US innovation are really brought to life by Wagner. I also enjoyed reading about Emily Roebling and her accomplishments as well. The level of detail is nicely balanced with a well crafted biographical and cultural narrative.

Read this book and marvel at the genius, sacrifice and courage that carried America to the pinnacle of nations. John Roeblingwas a gifted German immigrant whose fortune was built on a life of penury. Washington Roebling was his brutalized son who dutifully carried his father’s crowning achievement to completion but not without the heroic work of his wife, Emily. In the midst of the work, his health failed. He became an invalid and the project stalled. Emily re-invented herself as self-taught engineer and project director. Her courage and determination carried the bridge to its successful termination.

The book is an entertaining account of the life of an important individual. It has very little detail of his engineering work. Why was he able to build bridges? What did he contribute? What is it about the technology of suspension bridges that makes them the choice for long spans? But the book does talk about Mr. Roebling as a person, and he is kind of interesting. It drags a bit at the end.

This is a great book that combines biography, history and technology. The writer tells an captivating story supported by source documents. This book should be used to teach historical and bibliographic writing. The only suggestion I have is more pictures dealing with how wires, bridges, etc., were made.

Interesting book that adds new information from Washington's writings. Puts John Roebling in a very negative light with little corroborating evidence. Washington seems to have had a complex personality that strongly resented his father. Makes me wonder how much of Washington's writing about him were true. I would have liked to read more about whether the brothers had a similar view of JR.

A very interesting and detailed biography of one of the great men of our country. The history of the Roebling family is one that is an untold story of American culture. Although his father was the founder of the company, Washington made the name famous through his genius and sacrifice building the great Brooklyn Bridge.

Interesting read about the design and construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, and other bridges before that. Washington Roebling had a tortured childhood and adolescent life - mainly due to his father. It's amazing 'Washy' held it together. Interesting reading about the Civil War from Washington Roebling's perspective.

STUDENTS BEWARE!!!! The item title of this textbook, says "Pearson eText -- Access Card Package". It doesn't come with it AT ALL. That was a $110 purchase when it doesn't include the access card package. It does say, "Access codes and supplements are not guaranteed with rentals". So basically its a crap shoot if you get it or not. Tried to contact the seller to no avail. Make sure you find out it comes with the textbook first.

This book does a terrible job explaining the content. Some concepts are presented with pages of examples and others get a one-paragraph explanation & then moves on. I spent so much time on the internet trying to inderstand what the book was saying (or not saying) that I ended up buying a second book to help me understand the concepts I was trying to learn with this book. The chapters are stuffed full of practice questions, but it does not explain the answers for the practice questions. If you get a question wrong, you are left on your own to figure out why & how they arrived at the correct answer. The tone of the book is rather condescending.

Did not come with an access code (as advertised). When I contacted amazon...the only solution was to return it and rent another. They also recommended that I pay for overnight shipping myself. Although the book is advertised as having an access code, it says in the fine print that the codes are not guaranteed. My class has now started and now I don't have an access code to do the homework. Although I have had great experiences with Amazon Rentals, this has been disappointing and the title is very misleading.

I never had a good understanding of statistics until I read this book. Chapter 6 is where it all came together and I finally saw the light. Of course, it is important to have a good grasp of the foundational material leading up to that point. Let me say that if a student does not know the difference between a probability distribution and a sampling distribution, they do not understand statistics. Those are two very different things, and I don't think this subtle yet profound concept is emphasized enough in most introductory statistics courses. It is a shame, but I was in that place of darkness myself for many years.This book does well to dispel such ignorance through guided examples in each section and plenty of similar exercises at the end. There are even answers to odd-numbered problems in the appendix so you can check your work. I also love the flow charts and diagrams at the end of the chapters. They really help visually organize all the concepts floating around. Perhaps the best feature of all (especially if the student is using online homework accompanying the text) is the collection of blue boxes scattered throughout. They highlight important formulas (as well as necessary criteria to use those formulas, in some cases) so they are easy to find. Lastly, there are fun biographical boxes about influential statisticians throughout history.In summary, I highly recommend this book. If you are willing to read it thoroughly, follow the examples, and do the exercises as necessary (especially chapter 6), it is quite possible you will truly understand statistics. If you are a typical disinterested student who is just taking this course because it's required for your major, I also recommend this book because of it's user friendly approach for beginners. Well written. Well organized. Well done!

You do not get every chapter. Apparently chapters 13, 14, and 15 are on a CD but not a part of the Kindle version. Kindle being a digital download does not provide access to these chapters. Am a bit miffed for the 150 dollar price I paid for the Kindle version but did not get the full book. Very shortsighted whether Kindle or the publishers, I do not know. Very fustrating!

The used book arrived in a shorter time than promised. The seller included a new CD as well which I appreciate tremendously. The seller is absolutely fantastic. The condition of the book is exactly as described by the seller. I will buy my next book from this seller.I find the book to be an excellent teaching tool for statistics. The authors did a marvelous job in their extensive accurate well-organized presentation. The authors were helped by several high powered groups (mostly PhDs) to perfect the book. The illustrating examples are from all aspects of life, well explained and thought out. The exercises illustrate the material very well.It is very easy to tell that a lot of work and high-level expertise went into this book. I am very impressed. It is well worth the high price. If you can't afford the latest edition, buy the previous edition used copy (this won't work for students since they need the same edition used for the class).I love everything about this book. I highly recommend it for those seeking to learn Statistics.

Well its an easy to read statistics book. After purchasing the book I got a B+ in my college stats class the examples were really easy to follow and the solutions were all on chegg which made learning really easy. Recommend the book for college stats.

As with many collector's books, this one has a lot of nice pictures but a dearth of information. Yes, there is some general information about Art Deco and each section has a nice preface about that type of items - such as Bar Ware, Clocks, etc. Another reviewer mentions using this as a reference; I can't imagine who would use it as a reference as there is no reference material in it! There are some great pictures and some generally vague descriptive information about each picture. The values, of course (as with any book of values) aren't very relevant to anything as today the true arbiter of values for items such as these is eBay and some of the values in this book are wildly distorted from today's realities.The worst thing about the book that, to me, makes it really worthless is that the pictures have no information about when the items were made and marketed. Since there are plenty of great pictures available on the Internet through a Google image search the pictures; without some information about the items, these are just more pictures. The author obviously didn't want to bether with any research about the items nor about putting together a book that had some intrinsic value. In fact, in the Smoking Accessories section, the Cummings book is mentioned, but the author doesn't even bother to look through it to get proper names on Ronson lighters or give a time frame for them - when this information is in a book mentioned! Even cigarette cases with combined lighters are listed as "pocket ligher" - without mention of the fact that the product is really a cigarette case with an integrated lighter - it isn't simply a pocket lighter at all!What is the point in a book such as this when values are immediately outdated (if, indeed they were ever valid), when the only information is pretty generic stuff about the Art Deco era, and when there is generally no real information about the articles pictured? No point at all - other than maybe for the author to get a little ego trip (from people who only know it's a book and nothing about the subject)and make a few bucks.

I have been collecting Art Deco for quite a while and was very excited when I ordered this book. The book is well written and the items listed are amazing but very limited on variety of styles. I only have three items in my collection that were listed in this book, it made me feel like I have been collecting the wrong items. I do not dislike this beautiful book, it simply didn't apply to my collection.I would advise the reader to buy it because it is loaded with info that adds to our knowledge pertaining to the Art Deco period. A good collector is an educated collector.

This book was published in 1997, but values are updated for the year 2,000. Wonderful 224 page book contains more than 600 large, full color, sharp photos. Major topics range from bar ware, clocks, dresser accessories, to smoking, statutes, tableware and vases. It contains much text on the origins and development of Art Deco, and each section contains useful information. It also includes facts on reproductions, manufacturers and marks and a comprehensive bibliography. Art Deco collectors will enjoy and refer to this volume often.

This book is ok if you can grab a used copy for a couple bucks. It has some good info, some pages have nice color photos, but most of it is small black and white photos with very little information about the items. Not a very useful reference book, and you won't learn much.

These complete, well written and excellently coded frameworks are available under the GPL and an alternate, low-cost license for those who wish to keep their code private.For strong C programmers, the implementation of the frameworks is a delight as one reads through the code and is treated to an incredibly simple, lightweight and extremely powerful system that will forever put an end to your future plans to "superloop" again--albeit for any system where C (or C++) is adequately supported by the hardware. For anyone admitting that "we've always done superloop and it has always worked in the past," get ready for a real-time, highly responsive system that actually IS event driven and thrives in as little as a few bytes of RAM and perhaps a K of ROM.For those who must hold on to the "superloop is king" mindset, consider the consequences of adding to your superloop an entirely new set of features and how that may affect the timing through your loop. I started with the "dining philosophers" example code discussed in the book and ported it to my own board (using a Renesas H8S-2166 microcontroller) and augmented the code to be responsive to external events (mechanical switches). This required software debouncing. While my "example" was somewhat "trivial" in terms of what the functionality actually did, it is, in my opinion, extremely typical of changing requirements of both new and legacy code in the day-to-day evolution of embedded systems programming.My changes to the example code were to implement a "bike light" feature set. That is, whenever a switched was pressed, the bike light--if off--would illuminate. An LED on the board was used for this purpose. Pressed again, the light would blink. Pressed and held for 1 second while on or blinking, the light would turn off.The typical implementation in superloop would often require a considerate approach to ensure that the new functionality was "injected" into the "right" part of the loop, so as to be of minimal impact to other areas of critical timing code. If any kind of action within the new code delayed the loop processing, then the whole of the superloop could come under further scrutiny and therefore cause more pain as one trials and tests system responsiveness on a number of potential new fronts.Atop of this new functionality, the frameworks-provided QSpy code instrumentation system, which allows one to have a stream of information about the system states and transitions, was ported to use a UART on the H8S. Imagine adding all of this new functionality in a traditional superloop body of code. Now, imagine adding it in a matter of perhaps two hours using the frameworks AND not adversely impacting the "legacy" application code at all!One of the most beautiful aspects of these frameworks is the ability to focus strictly on the code necessary for the task at hand instead of the entire system as a whole. The frameworks substantially frees the programmer from having to manually manage system responsiveness typical of the superloop.Using UML to design and document an embedded system is relatively new to many embedded systems programmers. Miro also provides a free download stencil set for MS Visio for easily implementing statecharts, which should help those interested in pursuing the many benefits of the technology included in this book.I first met Miro at a developer's conference in San Diego, CA. One thing that comes out in his book and his discussions of this exciting technology is his passion for it. I was very interested in it, as he was displaying his software running on a very resource constrained microcontroller--all in about 40 bytes of RAM or a bit less.Drawn to his topic by his enthusiasm, I admired the frameworks even more as I began looking at the implementation and design of the code. The entire C bundle, with royalty-free 'private commerical use' license, one of either cooperative or preemptive schedulers (both are provided), event processor, code instrumentation support and more is all for under $2K. Of course, one may explore the entire frameworks for the cost of only a free download before ever making a licensing decision for a given product.Combined with the low-cost solution of using such powerful frameworks in conjunction with learning the valuable content of this book, teams everywhere can exploit the years of experience and very robust, capable code in a matter of hours instead of weeks, months and even years of doing things the "old school" way using superloops and other facilities instead of truly event-driven designs.This book and the free QF download are your entry into the 21st century of embedded systems programming. Because the code is provided in C, porting is rather easy and running on embedded systems and desktop systems is practical and easy. I was able to build and run the code as provided without modifications on my Linux, Mac and Windows systems and on the H8S and a Microchip PIC 24 with only a minimalist porting effort of about a half a day in each case. Imagine being able to run an entire real-time system that features excellent extensibility while freeing you from the rigors of managing superloop timing on your own hardware all within a few hours. Then, spend a couple of hours extending the system without impacting the rest of it? Lather, rinse, repeat...it is truly that simple and robust.Best of all, this book will open your eyes to modern methods and concepts for programming event-driven embedded systems. That is, systems that respond to internal and external events that naturally occur in all embedded systems designs. It is my firm belief that after reading this book and exploring the code on your own, you'll discover why I so heartily endorse it and now share the passion Miro has for this wonderful, very lightweight but robust, complete solution for modern embedded systems programming.

It is rare to find an author who is so strong theoretically, while paying such close attention to implementation details like microcontroller resource conservation. The Nano product, for example, shows he has his eye on the low end 8 bit embedded world, not just the Gigahertz microcontrollers used in smart phones and the like.I've tried all the ways to make state machines in C and assembler, and I have to say the function pointer method is by far the best. He spent lots of time on the underpinnings of both flat and hierarchical state machines, and went through the process of implementing simple state machines using the various methods that have been tried before. At the end, not only do you feel comfortable with complex state machines, but you can really understand WHY the way taught in the book is the best way. One it "clicks", you will never go back again. I'm completely sold.If that weren't enough, he adds a real-time framework to the state machine skeleton which includes a task scheduler, an event queue, and a built-in method to encapsulate the various state machines into active objects. This way, you can run concurrent orthogonal and nested state machines without getting lost in the details. It's all so well organized, I feel like I've been a hack programmer up until now.I do have a quibble though. It's not the product - it's the book. It's already getting a bit out of date. The book doesn't cover QM - the modeling tool - at all. It also doesn't cover QT integration, which is a great method of building your virtual prototype on your desktop before committing it to your target. If you want an end-to-end development environment, QM and QT are golden. QT is an outstanding C/C++ development environment in its own right, and the GUI features seal the deal.Finally, I hope the next version (which I will almost certainly buy) comes out on Kindle - to save some trees.

I am impressed, the book handles a difficult topic very well. BTW, this is my first 5-star rating, ever. One gets both a high-level picture, as well as detailed examples. What I especially appreciate is that the author anticipates my questions and covers them well. I am actually an application (.NET/GUI), not embedded, developer; yet this is by far the best source on state-machines and event-driven programming I have found. I did notice few typos, but they did not cause much confusion.

This is an excellent book describing the statecharts approach to state machine programming. My only complaint is that I wish more practical examples were discussed, top-to-bottom including their implementation on a number of target platforms, and slightly less attention paid to the theory. Other than that wish, this is still an excellent way to start coding state machines using UML statecharts.

In 1967 Duke University Press published the 240-page-long "The Civilian Conservation Corps, 1933-1942: A New Deal Case Study" by John A. Salmond. Salmond diligently mined primary sources such as government documents, letters and newspapers giving us a balanced and incisive look at the most popular New Deal program. Indeed most of the foot notes in his book are from primary sources. While Salmond’s book focuses on Washington he does not neglect the life of those who participated in the program and the work they did. He addresses how the CCC came to be and why it was disbanded in 1942. Only a few other scholars have successfully attempted to deal with the big picture of the CCC such as Christine Pfaff’s book on the CCC Bureau of Reclamation camps and John C. Paige’s administrative history of the CCC and the National Park Service. A number of books on the CCC have been published by the popular press but none have the authority, detail and thoroughness of Salmond’s book. And until now only a few detailed studies of the CCC at the state level have been completed including Nevada, Connecticut, New Mexico, Minnesota, North Carolina, Alabama and mine for Colorado and Arizona. So it is a welcome occurrence that Johns Hopkins University Press has published this new book as part of their How Things Worked series.This new book is divided into sections dealing with how the CCC came about, how boys joined, how they labored and learned, how they spent their leisure time and the end of the CCC. Alexander’s writing is inviting, clear and easy to read.Unfortunately the book is only 179 pages long, surely not enough to deal with such a large, lengthy and complex organization. He very heavily uses secondary sources such as dissertations and history books written decades after the CCC. Yet there is no mention in the book's bibliographic essay of Harley E. Jolley’s excellent study of the CCC in North Carolina, Robert J. Moore’s Arizona and Wisconsin studies, Kathleen Duxbury’s works dealing with the CCC Artists Program, the excellent works about the Texas state parks CCC work by Jim Steely and others as well as my detailed studies of the CCC in Arizona and Colorado.As a result of his heavy use of secondary sources this book does not add significant new knowledge of the CCC. Sadly the neglect of at least one key primary source namely the official final report of the CCC published in 1942 has resulted in a number of errors of fact in the book. The incorrect numbers include the total number of CCC enrollees, the number of trees they planted (three billion not "well over two billion"), miles of telephone line erected, number of man days fighting forest fires and the highest number of enrollees reached (520,000 not 502,000).Alexander states that “partisanship and cronyism played a huge part” in the hiring of CCC superintendents and foremen (page 48). According to him “political patronage” “ran rampant in the CCC” (page 122). However Salmond wrote the “CCC was never riddled with politics” (page 104). Salmond wrote that politics did enter into the organization “yet its effect was mild” (page 105). My research on the CCC in Arizona and Colorado revealed some hints of partisanship but surely no pattern of favoritism. Indeed I view the issue of partisanship in the CCC as still largely a subject in need of more serious scholarship.Salmond's essential CCC book has not yeat been surpassed.
