KAREN TIMBERLAKE is Professor Emerita of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles. Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 37 years. Very frustrated with this product. Great condition and everything but it was supposed to come with a Pearson access code and it did not so now I have to spend even more money on that... 🙄

I am a college student about to start my second year of B.A. in Biological Sciences and purchased this book to read over the summer because I am going to take about a year of Organic Chemistry. The book's Organic Chemistry Chapters actually start at Chapter 12, so the ENTIRE book is not Orgo chem. However, the first half of the book is basic General Chemistry needed to understand Orgo and more, so it served as a nice reference material in case I forgot anything or if I wanted to revisit any past material that I kind of forgot. As for the Orgo Chapters, which I truly read and worked out, they were interesting to read, simple to understand and provided enough basis that I have a substantial foundation for organic Chemistry. It's a perfect, "Intro to Organic Chem" type of book. The book also includes tons of medical and biological applications and examples, making it more interesting and informative to read. Be warned however, if you are taking higher level Organic Chem other than the intro, like I will have to later, this book might not go into enough depth. This book is great if : a) you want to a good foundation for organic chemistry b) learn some applications or c) quickly review or reference anything you forgot.

Over 250 pages came out of the binding. The glue is still holding those pages together, but not by much. There is some writing, but it doesn't interfere with the material.Overall, it will work, but having so many pages not actually attached to the spine is going to get annoying.

I typed the ISBN in search and it matched this book, GREAT. But then I got the book and the ISBN did not match. Go figure. Loss of $$. BUT the book looks great it's an older addition.

BE ALERTS !!!! I paid for the new book $162 without Access Code. I sent the request for return and then they blame that I did not read the description and then I double checked, I found that at the top of description they mention about Access Code with bold and then at the close to the bottom, they mention that access code not include even for New book and this mention without bold, just like normal text, if you don’t careful, you never know that the new book is not included Access Code. Seriously? They blame on customer just because in description they bold the text that mentioned about Access Code and unbold with the text that “Access Code not include”. Same price with other sellers without Access code for new book! Sorry but I never ever buy textbook anymore

Good, not great. It's nice to rent the book rather than buy it. However, it's definitely been used many many times because it's looking a little rough around the edges. Many pages have tears or are crumpled up. It's still usable, but just something I've noticed.

At first I was worried that this book was going to be different than what I needed for my college chemistry classroom, but I was thrilled to find out it was exactly what I needed. It was brand new and at a more affordable cost than what I was being offered at my school. I was thrilled when I got it because I was able to et to studying right away.

Every page in this book truly looks like it would in the printed version, except perhaps that the images seem even clearer, more sharp. Navigation is incredibly easy, I don't have to struggle to find a specific page, or to flip from one to the next, the pages all load immediately and the table of contents is a touch away, but also hidden until you need it. I bought the Kindle book so I wouldn't have to carry around a heavy textbook, and because I can still do everything I can do with a printed book (highlight, bookmark, etc) without having to worry about damaging it. The downside is I can't re-sell it, and it does not come with the access code, or anything really, just the book itself.

Not thrilled with the abuse themes in this book and how everyone around Briand blames her for the abuse. That's seriously twisted and wrong, but never gets addressed. I also had a hard time with her lack of fighting back; it wasn't a statement of strength, but almost an acceptance of her victimization. Also twisted. I also think abuse victims gain some survival skills out of necessity so I expected her to read people better and have more of an instinct for avoiding traps and blows. At the end of the book, I feel like she has accepted people as friends who participated in her abuse or have it tacit approval by doing nothing to stop it, and all without any of these men having changed. While I agree that Briand has maturity to gain, I don't like the message that her abusers get to be forgiven because she's changed; it implies, again, that the abuse was her fault.I will give book 2 a try, but if the victim continues to get blamed for the abuse, and continues to be abused, I am going to be very upset.

I was happily reading along (sometimes while walking along, which in turn turns into running into things), minding my business, enjoying the well developed characters and scenery and plot, and all of a sudden, the story ends. Just stops. Yes, the small plot is concluded, but there are bigger things afoot, and I for one, wanna know what happens next. There is no mention of this being part of a series, so I spend a few minutes stewing..... then I went into stalker mode and scrolled through the author's facebook page, and lo and behold, there's a post that she's working on a sequel. Hallelujah! But truly, this is a well crafted book, I just might have waited til the story was complete before reading it. (patience is not one of my strong points)

This was a good book. I love how Briand has a strong personality despite the way she is treated. I like the way the characters are introduced to us. It did however lack a certain character development. Maybe that will be something for the next books in the series? Like I said, it was good and I would like to find out more, but I was not completely sucked into the book. I will read the next book in the installment though because there were some elements that piqued my interest. I got a hint of something more between Kael and Briand, how will the dragonsayer-thing play out,...?

This is a great book! The book description does not do it justice. It is filled with adventure and intrigue and has great character development. Dragons are up played in the description, but hardly physically make an appearance in the book. If anything its about 99% talk about dragons, 1% actual dragons. If you are looking for a book with a focus on actual dragons, this might not be the one for you. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Wow! I couldn't put this one down! It's got magic and dragons and I just want more. I will say I wish there was more detail about the magic. I feel like a prologue that explained what happened to magic and dragons would've improved an already great read. This will be one I reread on the regular. I'm off to start book 2 now.

They way the characters treated the girl character like they were jealous and 10 year old, grow up. Stopped reading it, it could of been decent.

Another tale has dragged me under, this one is fantastic! Kate is such an exceptional author, I can't wait to read more!!!

This book was a pretty good read for me. I liked Briand and spent a good deal of the book being indignant on her behalf. She sure proved herself, though.

A really unique concept underlies these novels. I found the alchemical powers here refreshing in the same way that Steven Erikson's use of tapping into Warrens was... none of that abracadabra mumbo jumbo. Groundbreaking concepts aside, the characters and events bring a ton of clarity to this storyline. The 'Fledgling God' innuendos will have me thinking back on these books for a long time.

It's not a bad book, but be warned that it is very long, and that space isn't filled with new and exciting adventures. It's filled with a lot of random events, sometimes ones that have no effect on the outcome. However, the characters are easy to get to know, and though it isn't for me, I'm sure others will get absorbed into it.There is a lot of violence. Gory violence. I need to remind people that this is a young adult book with lots of adult themes. Young adult does not mean it is okay to read to your children. This book should be read by people who are over 18, but that is my opinion. I would never want this book read to anyone under 14, though just 14 or 15 would be pretty messed up too. I don't remember the story containing any harsh language, and I don't remember any sexual scenes. However, there are mentions of 'whore-masters' as they call them in the book. Prostitution is not a main theme, and it is very minor and only mentioned off on the side, not affecting any main characters. There are mentions of a rape-and-kill situation of a CHILD, but the child is not harmed in the end.The book contains very dark themes, just as one would expect from their type of setting. Morals are all but thrown out the window with murder and such, so that's another reason not to read it to children. It should be read by someone who understands what their morals are.

Brandon Sanderson, the author chosen by the late Robert Jordan's widow to finish his *Wheel of Time* series, was chosen based on the fact that Jordan's widow took a liking to his previous work. One of those works is the *Mistborn Trilogy*. To be sure, calling it a “trilogy” is now misleading, as Sanderson is writing other books in an attempt to flesh out a “history” of his fictional world. I guess eventually it will be called the “Original Trilogy”, or something to that effect. I digress. The first book in this world is the first of the original *Mistborn Trilogy*, *Mistborn: The Final Empire*.The series is set in a world where there are massive “ashfalls”, from volcanoes, and other ecological disasters. In the midst of this, the ruler and “deity” over the world, known as the “Lord Ruler” controls the massive caste system in his world-wide empire. The upper-crust, called the “nobility”, are those whose ancestors are said to have supported the Lord Ruler's rise to power as he fought against the evil forces destined to destroy the world before his “ascent” to “godhood”. The truth is that the Lord Ruler is *not* a god. He is a man who gained power upon doing the mighty deeds of legend, and in the intervening years grown more and more evil. He has destroyed all of the prophecies and religions in the world before his time. Thus all truth is removed from the world. Only a small underground network of scholars is left trying to use magic to preserve knowledge and seek out the truth.The nobility rules over the under-class, called skaa. These people are shorter in stature, though arguably stronger physically, and lacking the traits which give them magical powers called “Allomancy”. Allomancy is the ability to take swallowed amounts of specifically mixed metal alloys of different varieties, that are then “burned” by the Allomancer's body to perform feats. These Allomancers are split into groups according to their ability. Either an Allomancer can burn only one metal granting them a specific power, or they can burn *all* metals to exercise all of the powers. Those that can do such are called “Mistings” and “Mistborn”, respectively.The Lord Ruler, to prevent the existence of skaa Mistings and Mistborn, who could rebel against him, outlaws romantic relationships between the nobility and the skaa, only allowing such to take place if the nobleman kills the skaa before she can become pregnant, as well as trying to kill so-called “half-breeds”. Some such half-breeds escape alive and turn to crime to survive, or a few legitimate businesses while hiding their abilities. This is a world where the Lord Ruler uses magic, physical violence, and psychological warfare, to oppress the populace. This is about to change.One of the “thieving crews” of skaa decide to attempt the impossible. They are to attempt to help the insignificant skaa rebellion to overthrow the Final Empire and kill the tyrannical Lord Ruler. Things seem to be impossible, and indeed, there are many setbacks. But in the end, it just might happen.The best part of the story is that the author learned from such greats as Robert Jordan, and Robert Jordan's inspiration, J. R. R. Tolkien. What I mean by this is that Sanderson managed to infuse the story with the same sense of wonder and friendship that Tolkien used in *The Lord of the Rings*, as well as the same emphases on themes of friendship and sacrifice, and a detailed, well-though out mythology.The systems of Allomancy and Feruchemy, the other major (also metal-based) magic system are very intricate. The author clearly spent quite some time thinking over his systems of magic, and the story certainly benefits from it. The various ecological, and geographical, aspects of the world and it's problems, are also described in *pain-staking* detail.Perhaps the best part of the book, in my opinion, was the earlier referenced focus on friendship. The ways that the characters love each other and look out for each other. Vin, one of the two main protagonists of the novel, is looked after and tutored by another half-skaa Mistborn, named Kelsier. It is Kelsier's vision and planning that results in the team's successful rebellion at the end of the book.Vin starts out not trusting anyone, but slowly, over the course of the novel, Kelsier and his crew invited her into their midst. They slowly show her the true meaning of friendship and help her to learn that people, *can*, indeed, love and trust each other.I can't really think of anything to dislike about the book, except that I wish that the “love story” was not so rushed. It made no real sense in the tale. We have Vin's point of view, but not her love interest's. That really made it hard to “root” for the characters. Or, at least, to root for the love interest. Only the passion of Vin makes the couple anything interesting. Oh, don't get me wrong. The love interest *is* interesting, but his thoughts are so limited on any subject, and most of the time he has a point of view, he spends hardly any time thinking about how he loves Vin, or “Vallette” as he knows her, as compared to other topics.All together a fun novel, and a good introduction to the “Mistborn” world. I look forward to starting the second book, *Mistborn: The Well of Ascension* soon.Highly Recommended.

I'll admit, in the beginning stages of the book it goes a little slow, and I had no idea who these people were until later on in the book when it's more explained, so I had a little bit of a hard time pushing through but so glad I did because man, it was incredible! You really feel a connection to the characters, they're not just words on a paper anymore. Everything is so perfectly described so that you can easily imagine what is happening, I've even added a mental soundtrack to some of the fight scenes because they are that epic (yes I'm weird!)Brandon Sanderson truly has a way with words and I'm looking forward to finishing the last book, I hear it's incredible!

Not a bad book to get back into the fantasy genre. It took 20 pages or so for me to get truly interested in the universe, but it didn't take much long after the heist crew got together for the book to become pretty enjoyable.I don't think it is outstanding, but it does entertain and does offer an interesting magic system that does feel clever and unique enough, and it doesn't make the main characters invincible.When it started to feel like it was on a one-way rail, it surprises by switching things around. It does this a couple of times, which is good enough to keep it fun.Not all the secondary characters are equally developed and the romantic plot is quite generic and rushed, but these are not detrimental enough to the overall experience.The main bad guy and his elite henchmen are well-presented, for they do exude menace and tension whenever they appear.The writer does seem to love the word "maladroitly" as he uses it far more times than I've ever heard it or read it in my life.I recommend it for a quick fantasy read. I will follow it up with its sequel.

Just finished enjoying Naked Europe with my wife. We loved Key West and were intrigued at what had gone on before it. If you like travel, odd folks and don't mind a bit of the risque,or the occasional wordiness, this is the book for you. If you haven't read Key West, be sure to pick that up when you're done with Naked Europe.I hope Jon's travelling now, or better yet, done travelling and busy writing.

Funny, interesting. Author has a good sense of humour. Most of his observations are accurate, however he should perhaps not show off his so called knowledge of the other languages as he makes quite a few mistakes (in German, French and Spanish ...) Nevertheless I really enjoyed this book,!

I read this book after reading Jon's two Key West books. All are most enjoyable, well written and often funny in the extreme (read them: you'll see). And all are good travel guides as well, giving you a 'ground floor view' of the sites and people of places most interesting.

I am absolutely in love with his books. Keep writing Jon. This is the second book of his I have read and am getting ready to begin the second Key West book but I can't see how it could improve on the first.

Couldn;t put the book down, great story lots of interest with the coutries & people visited, I love travel stories.This author can realy put it all together and keep your interest.

This book is very entertaining and informative. I'm sure I'll read it again. I plan to read every book by Jon Breakfield!

In the beginning I thought I would have to.put the book down ...didn't like the style . I persevered ended up "Liking this observant , irreverent ,witty and well paced" travel book.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. It was humorous and well written and his descriptions of the atmosphere of different European cities and their citizens was spot on. However, at one point the author used a well known joke (the joke was actually used in GOOD WILL HUNTING) and tried to pass it off as if was a real experience. That made me more cynical and skeptical about the veracity of the rest of the tale and his experiences. I understand combining sources and stories but to just re-hash funny stuff other people have written and present it as your own is plagiarism and in this case totally unnecessary because the story as a whole was very entertaining.

I really enjoyed this book. As an aspiring entrepreneur it was very valuable to me. Kims honesty and willingness to share her story about her personal life, along with her career life is inspiring. i highly recommend it!

I finished this book in a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon....I couldn't put it down! Written with honesty and integrity. As a women in business, yet not having started my own company, I could relate to so many of her recounts. Kym's experiences have raised my level of awareness of some of the missteps women make in business - not listening to our intuition and second guessing what we know to be true. Not taking credit for the successes we are responsible for may many times lead to an opportunity for someone else to allow perception to be truth. I also hope it continues to bring to light the fact that the board room and c-suite are still not level playing fields for both sexes. I appreciate that she shared her story so that many other people can learn from Kym's experiences.

Kym tells a personal story that is compelling to read and opens your eyes to the hows and whys of her success. Gold Standard is an easy and enjoyable read that tells the life story of someone who really hit it big time. I really liked the personal aspect and the way Kym tells her life story from her heart. Its a rare insight of how she made it and the heart behind the gold!

Honest, witty, with no sugar-coating! This behind-the-scenes, tell-all is an inspirational book for anyone breaking into the fashion industry (or women entrepreneurs in general). Kym shows that vision, instinct, belief in your ideas, relationships, rigor, and good old-fashioned *smart*, hard-work can rocket your business to success. The book also addresses the age old question, "Can women really have it all?" You'll find out, but I won't give any spoilers. I definitely recommend it!

As someone who has been in the industry for more than 10 years I have to say I found this book very honest and infornative. It's not every day people will open up to that extent that Kym has and tell you how they got to where they are. They will purposely leave gaps in the hopes of not being surpassed. She doesn't. I feel this woman is a force to be reckoned with and I couldn't put this book down. I read it in an afternoon and with two babies that's not an easy task. Her journey documented through this book made me see that heck yes I can do it too and she also helps you to see how to set up your business structure, who you need on your team, and most importantly that life goes on even if your outcome isn't what you wanted or expected. I learned that you are the architect of your life and that with perserverence anything is possible even when those closest to you disappoint.Kym Gold is truly an inspiration and I implore anyone who is interested in building a fashion business to read this again and again. What a great read!

Simple, straightforward story about a creative business woman, who started a fashion business, then started it over. And over. Her motivation and perseverance is admirable and contagious. She's done a lot of things right with the results to prove it. Grab this page turner business how-to if you're an entrepreneur or if you're planning on becoming one.

I have been working with databases for about ten years now. I consider myself an intermediate user. I have had exposure to mainframe systems, mini systems and desktop systems, including DB/2, Oracle, MSSQL, Access, Paradox, dBase and others. I have learned a lot on my own, and I recognize that I have much to learn. That said, I wish I had come across a book like this one YEARS AGO. This book breaks down database types, concepts, terminology and fundamentals in a way that can be understood by anyone with the will to learn about databases. I am not much of a reader. For me, reading is work. Yet I have already read this book half way through in about four days. If I were an avid reader, I'm sure I would have finished it.While this book will not walk you through building a database in any particular database product, it WILL teach you how to look at your data and determine the best approach to take in setting up a database to manage it. It will also lay the foundation, upon which you CAN learn to use a database application and make it happen.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK to any aspiring database administrator or analyst. There are some typos, but they are minor. This book ROCKS. I know I am repeating myself, but I wish I had found this years ago.

Recently, I finished reading Dr. Harrington's excellent book, "Relational Database Design and Implementation". And I felt the need to share how impressed I am with this book.Dr. Harrington's book represents a full, yet accessible, treatment of the Relational Model for Database together with practical considerations pertaining to the implementation of relational databases. In this, I would compare her excellent book with two other classics on the subject: Dr. Codd's magisterial "The Relational Model for Database Management, Version 2" and "The Handbook of Relational Database Design" by Fleming and Von Halle. Codd's book, of course, is the masterpiece that ought to be required reading for any person aspiring to a career in modern data administration or database management. Harrington's book, here reviewed, covers much of the important, foundational material treated in much greater depth in Codd's book. And it does so in a very readable and understandable fashion. The reader of both will soon appreciate that Harrington is a teacher by trade, where Codd was a database scientist. In other words, Harrington nicely makes much of the important work covered by Codd accessible to readers who are not necessarily database scientists, but who, perhaps, are simply interested practitioners. "The Handbook of Relational Database Design" by Fleming and Von Halle is truly an emerging classic in the field. Yet, it is now becoming a bit dated. Harrington does not go into the depth of describing a full blown methodology for logical data modeling and relational database design, as did Fleming and Von Halle. But she does deal with current issues of design and implementation in an extraordinarily clear and effective manner.In summary, I was thrilled and well edified by Dr. Harrington's book. Perhaps the greatest complement I can pay to the esteemed author is that I have purchased and started reading her companion volume, "SQL Clearly Explained". To Dr. Harrington, I can only say: "Bravo"! To other interested readers and reviewers, I can only highly recommend Dr. Harrington's excellent and important book on Relational Database Design and Implementation. God bless.

I was surprised at how quickly I got though this book, in fact the biggest delays were in trying to determine the correct values of the many typos liberally scattered through the diagrams & examples in the book. These ranged from typos to mistakes in relationship cardinalities to just bad database design.I have built & designed systems with flat files for decades (wow - that was a scary thing to re-read ;-) and although I've picked up a lot on Relational systems along the way, I wanted to confirm my learnings and formalise my understandings of relational systems, hence reading this book.Sadly it has been a real disappointment, as I found so many mistakes in the book that I cannot really trust it, and so have started again with another author. Also, along the way I found her explanations - of things that I do know about - very confused and confusing (concurrency etc.)All in all, mostly a waste of my time (but thankfully it's quick to read ;-)I couldn't really recommend it to anyone.

I have never picked up a book series and have been so amazed by words on paper. Robert Muchamore has a serious skill for making you feel as if you are standing right in the middle of these stories.I originally borrowed the book serious from my cousin but they were just so good I had to buy my own set as I couldn't stop reading them.The killing is another Robert Muchamore book that you will plough through without even realising how much you have read and at that stage you will realise your done.Stop reading this review and go buy it!!!!James is such a cool character but when you but Dave and James together. all hell breaks loose. One of the best novels by Robert Muchamore

The 4th book of the Cherub series was quite good though it didn't have the same action as the previous three. James less likeable traits are uncovered in this book. It wasn't so much as a mission, more of a crime solving story which uncovers history of a dirty cop.

My son was addicted to this series of books and couldn't wait to read them all. He read each one in one night. That is how much he loved them. He has also read them all multiple times. He was about 14 when he read this series.

It's a fast read and good book with lots of action but has some sex jokes\kissing, etc. Good for tweens and teens. It's worth reading though. 👍
