I love how the speaker finds herself in conversation with the masses in places like the Dollar Store, Kroger, and Walmart. Meitner is a poet of witness but not of judgment. She is a mom, a traveler, a resistor, and a blesser who struggles to remain hopeful despite mass shootings, poverty, beheadings, executions, throat slashings, & racially charged graffiti, to name a few. Meitner's voice is reassuring, down-to-earth. It's like you're hanging out with her on one of her many long drives to and from her sons' schools. She keeps the reader's interest by taking us by the hand and showing us the United States we currently occupy, this "HolyMolyLand":"a place we all pass through (of violence, of revelation) with grand opening flags strung above fenced-in lots & railroad crossings."A land where"The security guards ask us to remove everything from our pockets--even lint."She is not offering solutions or panaceas for our apocalyptic times. Instead of reassurance, she offers how"The streets belong to no oneand everyone and are a guidefor motion ..."which I take to mean that we are all to be blamed or thanked for how history will look back on the 2nd decade of the 21st century. Yet, as much as Meitner is speaking for all of those who are outraged about the increasing gun violence and emboldened racist acts, Meitner's poetic gifts are most prominent when she's talking about herself - her own predicament of living in a college town and raising two sons, one of them more of a target:"More like I would invent a future where my black son will notget shot by police for playing in a park, or driving, or walking from hisbroken-down car."Dang, it's easy to procure a gun in West Virginia ("You need only be eighteen and / bring two forms of ID"), yet no state in our union has sufficiently stood up against the NRA and all those who believe in the right to bear arms.Meitner positions herself smack-dab in the middle of the firestorm, and yet she remains capable of being stopped in her tracks by the sound of wind chimes outside the Food Lion, by the notion that we could all be connected together by song:What ifthey trailed after us wherever we wentas though our actual steps on concreteor asphalt or linoleum generated song ...your cart my cart that beverageaisle: our trembling jittery refrain.It’s this do-si-do between the personal and the populace that kept this reader rapt.

This book was ok. I was curious to see how "real" couples saved money on "real" wedding. Do you want to know? They had friends help them out. Some had friends who let them use their yard, so they spent nothing on the venue. Another couple had a catering friend who significantly decreased the cost. If you don't have any friends in the "industry," this book won't help you save money.Otherwise, this book is like most other wedding planning books. Nothing I did not already know, after reading three other wedding planning books (my favorite was "The Wedding Planner & Organizer," by Mindy Weiss. It is a three ring binder and the dividers have pockets, so you can store wedding items in there and add pages when you need to. You can also take out the pages and make copies, so your final product is clean.

I purchased 2 copies of this book, one for my daughter and one for myself, along with a variety of other planning books. This one quickly became my daughter's favorite and so I started reading it first. I love the layout and how it goes from information about various aspects of the wedding day to personalized stories and pictures from those who celebrated the day under $10,000. I really appreciate how they share the "traditional" costs and then give alternative ideas plus tips and comments from real brides and grooms. I'm not sure this could suffice as the ONLY planner at this point, but it's more than worth it's price as an additional resource for sure.

This book was ok but many of the "budget friendly suggestions" depend on who you know and what access you have. For example one couple used their friends to photograph the wedding - well that's great but if you don't know anyone who takes professional quality photos that does you no good. Other examples included not having open bar and I just think you can find all of these suggestions online.

Needs more pictures! This book mentions a lot of couples who had special privileges from family or friends that are not available to the general public, such as a neighbor who was a caterer and gave them a deal or someone had a professionally done back yard and donated the use of it for the reception. This book needs more creative ways to save money.

This book was a wonderful resource and guide. Especially having had no idea where to begin and no budget for a wedding planner to assist me. It truly assisted my fiance and I in deciding what are priorities were and where the bulk of the budget would be spent. And though we did ultimately spend more than 10k, this book was a great tool in helping us identify what was important to us as a couple and what we could ultimately and comfortably live without.

I bought three books when I was planning for my wedding, this being one of them. It does have some useful tips and information however I wish I would have saved my money and only bought the other two (A Practical Wedding by Meg Keene and Bridal Bargains by Denise & Alan Fields).

I particularly like the listing of parts that are "traditional" and parts that you can "make shift" as I had no idea where to even start planning a wedding

I bought this book as a gift for my future sister in law, who is currently planning her wedding. On first glance some of the projects seemed like they would require special tools and equipment, but we haven't attempted any of them yet. Even with purchasing some extra stuff it still may be cost effective to do some of these things ourselves.

This book is basically the IP equivalent of Black's Law Dictionary. It starts with a brief overview for each type of IP and then has forms after the definitions sections but the bulk of it is definitions in alphabetical order. I picked it up as a quick refresher before starting in on an actual hornbook (I'm an attorney and my previous books are out of date).So, this book is quite good (and up to date) for what it is but the promotional quote on the cover ("A reliable, easily comprehended introduction to intellectual property law.") is definitely misleading and there are other books which would likely be better for learning the field and be more readable (e.g. the "Nutshell" books or an actual hornbook like "Understanding Intellectual Property Law" 3d ed. by Chisum, et al, which is, unfortunately from 2015).

This is the coffea table book I decided to get but it is really so much more in substance. Each Skyline displayed has a brief history lesson to it which is very nice. Some of the photos are breathtaking. Would recommend to anyone who wants a nice photography book.

Very pleased with this purchase and with the speedy shipping. It was a gift for my 14 year old grandson who enjoys visiting and exploring cities in the U.S. He loves the book!

Book arrived with the cover torn, taped and a "quality Amazon label" that this was "approved". I just ditched the cover. To bad, its a great pic and something I paid to get in 1 piece.

This is a very over-sized super-large format book. It offers a superlative collection of wide-angle panoramic photos of all the major (and some not-so-major) downtown city skylines in the USA. If that were all it offered, this book would easily stand as the best ever published in its field of skyline photography... but that is not all this book offers. It goes beyond that to also shows corresponding wide-angle photos of those same chosen cities from decades gone by... in some cases a century or more in the past... to give the reader a better appreciation of how the city has grown over time.Another feature I really like is that each city spread has a simplified line-drawing of the skyline at the bottom, which labels each major skyscraper, and references the name of that building. Of course, a good amount of text concerning the history and statistics of each city is also given... though photography, not text, is the emphasis of this beautiful folio.This may be the ultimate "coffee table book"... assuming you have a coffee table large enough to accommodate it. You can easily spend hours pouring over every page of this unique book.

I think the first thing to say about this book is the huge size. Almost eighteen inches wide with forty-eight city panoramas that open up to thirty-three inches wide so you'll rarely have seen your downtown in such a dramatic format. Enhanced all the more because many of the shots are taken at dusk or night which brings out the kaleidoscope of lights typical of city centers.All of the contemporary photography was done by James Blakeway who seems to specialize in aerial photography of the world's cities. Check out the Blakeway Worldwide Panoramas website to see a whole load more photos and read how Blakeway achieves these eye-popping images.I would be happy if the book just contained the forty-eight city center panoramas but there is a spread preceeding each image that has text and several historical illustrations to reveal the background of each place. The text and picture captions are rather generalized (how can anyone sum up a city in a few hundred words?) and I thought it might have been helpful to include a short bibliography about each city. The panoramas have their own captions which name the main buildings and fortunately someone had the good sense to include a simple skyline drawing with the buildings numbered.One of the strenghts of the book, I thought, was the concentration on downtown rather than high aerial shots. San Francisco is shot like this (and the camera angle makes it look remarkably like a version of Sim City) with the buildings stretching away from you but if you cover the downtown buildings it looks very much like any other city. The downtowns of so many places in the book are quite unique: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Memphis, Dallas or Atlanta for instance. Considering I was a Psych major about the time this book first made an impact, I don't know how I missed it. I mean, 12 million (!) copies in print. What a phenomena! The first thing that occurred as I read of his time in the concentration camps and the loss of his family members, including his pregnant wife was how he, or anyone else could survive such conditions and to take stock of my own blessings. One major point of the book is the idea that even during extreme suffering, life has meaning and a focus towards the future, even a bleak one can permit one to endure the bleakest of circumstance. This book is an interesting contrast to the Freudian approach as his program (called logotherapy) tends to focus on the future rather than the past; adjusts behavior and attitude; and tends to focus on a shorter term approach. It has many characteristics of cognitive behavioral therapy a more modern approach which tends to avoid the use of drugs to modify behavior. A most worthy read. It packs a lot of power in a fairly short read.

This book is for anyone who want to alleviate the hardships and difficulties that he or she is undergoing or had already underwent through it.This book provides us with the harrowing tales of Dr. Victor Frankl and other victims of the holocaust. He told us of the appalling life in the Nazi concentration camps where they were treated harshly and that word is even an understatement to describe their ordeal. They were stripped of everything: their wealth, identity and their very own dignity. However, according to Frankl, one can be stripped of everything but there is one thing that they cannot be stripped of, and that is the freedom to choose how we react to our sufferings. Hence, he introduces to us Logotherapy where as opposed to other philosophers’ perception on handling sufferings, Frankl uses the will to meaning. Finding meaning to this life and finding meaning to even our sufferings. Because once we find its meaning it ceases to be a suffering as we know its purpose already.I was prompted to read this book because it was mentioned in the book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey in the chapter of his book ‘Proactive.’ When I searched it on Goodreads, I was inclined to read it because it tells the story of one doctor who specialises in psychology who was a victim of the holocaust. He lost everything including his loved ones and I was amaze that, according to the book’s description, he had a method of coping up even the pain that is as excruciating as that.The book enlightens me on many things and most importantly it reinforces the things that I learned on my previous readings that were related to the subject and genre of this book. If there was one thing that I don’t like about it, it is the medical jargons that were used in it, because I find it difficult to comprehend some of the chapters due to it. But that is only light compared to the enlightenment given by this book.This is a must for everyone. Especially those who have lost the meaning and purpose to life and those who are currently being tested with difficulties because you can relate a lot of things to what Dr. Frankl had went through. I bet what we are undergoing right now is a microcosm to what he had experienced during the holocaust.

This was an excellent book to read because history seems to leave out a lot of personal details of how people dealt with being thrown in the "death camps" in WW II. This man was strong enough to figure out how to survive when so many did not. Of course, he points out that there was definitely luck involved.It's amazing to read the details of the daily struggles the inmates went through. The perserverance it must have taken to keep moving even when your body has wasted away to almost nothing must have been beyond extraordinary.I read the book because the title caught my attention. I didn't have any idea of what it was about and found I was curious about it's meaning. Once I started reading, I didn't want to stop. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the latter half of the book seemed to ramble on a bit in areas that weren't as interesting to me. I'm sure if I was more into the field of psychology, I might find it quite intriguing.If you like history and would like an intimate look at a prisoner's personal view of the "inside" of a concentration camp, I recommend this book. I found that his teachings did affect me in the end. It did make me ask some deep questions of myself. It also makes me hope that we, as human beings, recognize that WE can and will do atrocious things to each other, but that with examples like this, WE work together to never allow it to happen again.

Mr. Frankel's answer to the, "Why am I here?" question is both thoughtful and thought provoking. It is shaped in large measure by having survived the holocaust. His position is one of unshakable hope in the face of what can only be described as the ultimate hopeless situation. His factual description of life in the Nazi camps is both horrific and fascinating as the backdrop for his philosophy. It is not so much a "preach," as it is a discourse on why he feels the way he does. He is less selling a philosophy and more explaining how he arrived at it. I found it interesting that the question he addresses is "Why am I here?" and not "Why are we here?". It makes his answer more personal and more accessible and actionable by the individual reader without sacrificing its applicability to the collective "Man" in the title.

Not bad and great for first timers going out on their own and need to learn to cook. You "get what you pay for" as far as quality and taste from these recipes.

I'm a single guy. I love to eat. I hate to cook. These recipes are (for the most part) easy, tasty and only require a few ingredients. For the most part all of the ingredients are readily available. Not sure what "Caponata" (canned "eggplant appetizer") is or where I'd get it, but the rest of the ingredients should be in any reasonably well stocked grocery store. For lazy, hungry, single folks this one is a keeper!

I bought this book for my son who is 19 and is always walking in the house and asking what is there to eat and if there is nothing immediately there, he'll run off to McDonalds or gripe about starving. I told him one day, "son, you have to figure out at least 5 or 6 things you can cook so you can be independent one day". I found this book on Amazon and bought it at first as kind of a joke of our conversation. I gave it to him for Christmas and he actually loved it! He's made 2 or 3 things already and they are very good! I love this book, because men are very visual and don't want to read instructions. It has pictures of exactly what you need and the steps to cook it are simple and straight forward. If you have a bachelor or young man in your life that needs some nudging to learn some sort of cooking on their own, this is a good book to give them. It would be a GREAT book to give to any college student, not just males, because most everything is very affordable, and the best thing, all is needed is a microwave.

If you are really in a hurry and a man a can a plan is just too time consuming for the moment then do like the series did and take to the microwave. Get things done even faster and in a pinch. Great last minute minimalist meal saver.

I have 8 sons. I discovered these book back in 2006. And have given them to all the bachelors in the family. There awesome. Love the picture book style and indestructible book it’s self. A survival must I think.

Book is only 43 pages long, thick cardboard pages like a kid's book. Got it for a gift but disappointed in content

Great format. The books can be wiped off if food gets on them. This is the second title In this series that I have purchased for my grandson. He loves them. They are easy to follow, uncomplicated and require very little time.

This is a great little book for a graduation present - particularly for a boy. I give it with the ingredients for one of the recipes. So far, has been well-received.

I'm 62 years old. Kids are raised and gone. Bought this for my son who hates to cook ("too much trouble")...but I LOVE IT!! The recipes are actually very good, and beyond simple! LOL, repurchased the series of 3 for myself!
