I usually write things like IP address, login name, password, etc. on a slip of paper and tape it to the bottom of the device. I have a good memory, but short, and this helps.No login name oe password on the router. I picked up this book, and on page 28 there the annoyance -- Getting to the router. Here she gives the IP address of the router (and those of Belkin, Linksys, and Netgear) as well as the default user names and passwords.Fixing just one problem like this makes this book well worth while. And reading the rest of the book (fast to read because you only look at the annoyance and skip the answer if it doesn't apply to your problem of the moment) gave me several better understandings of some of the problems that I've faced before.This is a beginning to intermediate level book on home networking. It's a lot more than just annoyances.

It would be easy to think of a whole variety of things as networking, web clients, email, ftp. This book works at a lower level than that, debugging routers, internet connectivity, file sharing, and the basics. Though the basics can be difficult. If I could fault the book it would be that the exposition for some of the recipes are a little too short. Simply introducing a solution as opposed to walking through it at a reasonable depth. That being said, sometimes sign posts are as valuable as step-by-step maps.

To quote a friend of mine "This book has the wrong name. Instead of being called "Home Networking Annoyances," the name of the book should be "Why Windows Is Hard To Network." Yes, this book does talk all about home networking, but it only mentions Windows operating systems." Any one using any other operating system should not waste their time or money. It is unfortunate that the author is so narrow in her view as the topic is of considerable interest to many users of computers other than those operating under Windows.

About the Author

Marc Freedman is CEO and president of Encore.org, an organization he founded in 1998. Freedman is a member of the Wall Street Journal's "Experts" group, a frequent commentator in the national media, and the author of four previous books. Originator of the encore career idea linking second acts to the greater good, Freedman cofounded Experience Corps to mobilize people over fifty to improve the school performance and prospects of low-income elementary school students in twenty-two US cities. He also spearheaded the creation of the Encore Fellowships program, a one-year fellowship helping individuals translate their midlife skills into second acts focused on social impact, and the Purpose Prize, an annual $100,000 prize for social entrepreneurs in the second half of life. (AARP now runs both Experience Corps and the Purpose Prize.) Freedman was named Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the World Economic Forum and the Schwab Foundation, was recognized as one of the nation's leading social entrepreneurs by Fast Company magazine three years in a row, and has been honored with the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. I have a lot of cookbooks, but this one is definitely a favorite. I've found on several recipes I needed to adjust the seasoning to my taste, but that could be because I live in Louisiana where we like our food spicier. The photography and information, coupled with interesting combinations of tastes, makes this a delight to cook from or even just to leaf through in search of inspiration.

I have yet to make a meal from this book that wasn't excellent. So many times I am disappointed but not here! The meals are truly good restaurant quality. I bought this book at a bookstore in December and it's true to word. Great fireside feasts!

As I read The Ends of the World, I repeatedly found myself asking, "how have I never heard about most of this before?" The material in this book is incredible. It is the history of our world, and it's a shame that we don't grow up learning about much other than the dinosaurs going extinct. Peter Brannen solves that problem, by writing a book that is packed with the scientific history of our planet that is remarkably readable, and quite funny as well. The content approaches text book level, but it reads like a novel. Brannen paints vivid pictures of creatures and atmospheric events alike that demonstrate his profound literary abilities (it's hard to believe this is his first book). It is also incredibly insightful... in addition to covering the entire earth's history, he examines our current state, and what the future may have in store for us humans. Read it. Learn. Enjoy.

Peter Brannen is an extremely gifted science writer in the tradition of the venerable Richard Dawkins and much wittier than Stephen J. Gould. He provides here an excellent overview of our current thinking on prehistoric mass extinction events.The basic concepts (such as the carbon cycle) are well explained, down to the appropriate level of detail: there really is no need to descend into astrophysical details and try to explain why the early Sun was faint, and the many scientific uncertainties and counterviews are highlighted. More importantly the author presents all this with a 'helicopter view', never losing sight of the whole, something professional scientists (like myself) struggle with mightily when communicating their findings. He also includes lots of funny anecdotes, making this just a terrific page-turner. The whole story reads like a thriller where few of the protagonists die peacefully of old age and evidence against the suspects and what weapons they used is well explained, and which all ends well with us triumphant humans appearing in the final chapter to enjoy the show. If you think that great writers only write novels, do read this book instead. It is quite US-centered, with Americans even appropriating the cause for the first extinction with the rise of the Appalachians, but it all fits the intrigue.What I came away with is that only the earliest mass extinction- the one that ended the Devonian- is believed to have occurred directly by climate change (cooling). Life has since evolved to become much more robust, occupying a bewildering variety of niches and able to weather a wide range of climates- merely laughing at the 'recent' Ice Ages. Subsequent extinctions after that Devonian event required more sudden perturbations, like volcanoes and meteorites, and the wild CO2 swings that accompanied these just made things worse. I especially like the view that a large meteorite initiated the extinction of almost all dinosaurs (read the book if you still believe that all dinosaurs went away), but that this also caused Earth's magma to slosh around, helping a hotspot to pierce through India, which was just moving over it.Now where things get tricky is that this book is written in an era of heated debate over anthropogenic CO2, but that is not what the book is primarily about. What few fail to appreciate is that today's greenhouse gases are likely to greatly affect human civilization, but much less so all other life forms. So saying that the Paris agreement attempts to 'save the Planet' is therefore somewhat misleading. Coastal areas will disappear, but places like Canada and Siberia will much better support agriculture to feed us (which the FAO says should increase productivity threefold this century). Yet of course there is the ominous risk of hitting 'tipping points', so count me in as a climate worrier. Still, I would be much more concerned about an immediate return to the next Ice Age (again, this possibility is well discussed in the book). Also, we won't be pushing CO2 levels to the 30,000 ppm or so seen in the past (todays counter just passed 400). A massive extinction event is in fact ongoing (though not as bad as previous ones), but we are causing that by habitat destruction (appropriating Earth's surface for agriculture and building cities)- changing our climate has not much to do with it. I suspect Mother Nature is just waiting for us humans to go away to resume business as usual- from Her perspective, humanity's demise (through global warming or otherwise) is actually a boon for The Planet.Like I said, all this is a subtle discussion, and this book provides an excellent, well informed and well explained background to this. What is somewhat surprising is that human overpopulation, the elephant in the room, is not discussed. There is just no way Planet Earth can both maintain its biodiversity and 10 billion people, and this is a delicate discussion omitted from this book.

The five mass extinctions are a cliché. We actually have no understanding of what really happened. Peter Brannen has written a remarkable and extremely readable book (his first) to fill in the voids. The result is thought-provoking, gripping, and more than a little worrisome. It might be clear insight, but it makes you squirm.There were three main reasons for the extinctions. We all know about the asteroid hit, because it was only proven in the 1980s. But volcanic eruptions – the likes of which we have fortunately never seen – were the cause of another. As well, the planet keeps tipping in and out of ice ages as it wobbles its way along. When mass extinctions occur, they tend to be really fast – same day in the case of the asteroid hit, very few years in other cases. It’s not a gradual decline; it’s a stunning vanishing. Few species make it to the next era; we start over every time.The mechanics are remarkably similar. The level of carbon dioxide soars, crippling the oceans from doing their job, and they return the favor to the air, crippling everything else. The weather turns unimaginably violent. Everything gets wiped out. Land surfaces get scoured. It takes the oceans a good hundred thousand years to regain balance, and then a hundred million years for a new world of plants and animals to evolve and populate the barren Earth. In the interim, Earth is Hell.Brannen assembles the wisdom of renowned paleontologists to put the scenes together. There isn’t much disagreement on the mechanics or the major events. As CO2 rises, so do temperatures, and very few beings are capable of functioning in higher temperature bands. They falter and die. For survivors, there would be nothing to live on.Today we are in remarkably pleasant pause between ice ages, in which the continents have very fortuitously aligned north-south. That allows for migration and survival as different climates take hold. It also keeps the oceans pumping. There is a nice, benign balance to the weather, and the horrific volcanic flows that can deposit literally miles thick lava over entire countries, have ceased.Unfortunately, one species has seen fit to take command, and it is working to throw the balance the Earth has achieved into another era of chaos. We are imposing change at a rate “ten times faster” than the worst events in Earth’s history, say the paleontologists. When temperatures rise just one degree, the balance is upset. We are (laughably) attempting to hold it at another two. That will not support life as we know it. “The entire global economy depends on how quickly we can get carbon out of the ground and into the atmosphere,” says one. And we’re doing it bigger and better even than our volcanoes. As for rising oceans, paleontologists snicker at estimates of .5 to 2m. Every time this happened before, it was more like 15-20m for this kind of temperature rise. Considering all the factors that make a mass extinction, “We are the perfect storm.”One key takeaway is that we cannot learn from the events of the past. Every mass extinction was different. There are so many variables, life forms, different configurations of land and sea, there is no way of predicting numeric outcomes with certainty. Past performance does not guarantee future results. But the overall picture is grim and coming up fast, and Brannen found no paleontologists who say different.The Ends of the World fills in huge gaps, put things in perspective and (cough) clears the air about how the Earth works. For me, title was misleading. Maybe "Picking a Scope" in the titleI was hoping for information on using them in the hobby.I already have my scopes, so it wasn't money well spent by me

Definitely for beginners, maybe. Unfortunately, the author does a disservice to the radio amateur by concentrating mainly on digital oscilloscopes which, realistically, unless you can afford a very, very good one with an extremely high sampling rate, are next to useless for working on and aligning RF circuits. The computer usb 'scopes he touts, while fun to play with, are not suited at all for the radio amateur. But,maybe I'm speaking of the radio amateur of the past, who actually repairs his own commercial gear of yesteryear and also builds his own transmitters and receivers. This book never actually shows you what you can DO with an oscilloscope in the hamshack. A better book for buying a 'scope and using it (and a bunch of other test equipment, too) is "How to Diagnose and Fix Everything Electronic" by Michael Geier. In other words, there are better resources out there (including the internet) than Oscilloscopes for Radio Amateurs. 73 de Rick WQ8Q

The book is a good review on how 'scopes work. Only about 25% of it relates to ham radio. I don't need the whole history and how the 1950's scopes work; I can get that elsewhere. Precious little content on ham-specific issues.

Covers the history of oscilloscopes and provides an overview of how analog and digital scopes work. This will help you decide what features to look for if you want to buy a scope. However if you want a book that will explain in detail how to use scopes in ham radio, this may not be for you.

This has a bit of background about scopes in general but close to nothing about what you might do with them in the context of amateur radio.

Reviews history and basics but not much on practical application for beginner

Being an instrument person I enjoyed the book. My only issue was for me it was at times it was to basic. For others it will work fine with good explainations of the issues with oscilloscopes. A good read.

I am going to buy an oscilloscope to use in my Ham Radio Shack. I have used them in the past but the technology has changed dramatically over the years. It would be a mess to buy an oscilloscope only to find out that it misses the mark. This book has really filled the bill! I have read it from cover to cover and now feel like I know what to look for and how to use it when I get it. Many thanks.

It's a quick read at only 87 pages and divided up in small sections that make it easy to pick up and put down when the kids are yelling in your face. This book goes through exactly how Lindsay stepped up her game, decided she wanted to become a Momprenuer through network marketing, and exactly how she built a multi-million dollar business.She keeps her no-bullshit advice simple and to the point. I mean, it's what all of us mom's with small children need, right?One of my favorite quote from the book that I found 100% relatable was..."I've always been 'different.' I don't like regular mom stuff. I've never been the cool kid. I don't think like most women. I tend to go right when everyone else goes left, and sometimes that makes me feel lonely. I knew that if I felt a need to be something more than just a mom, there were probably other women who felt the same." (pg. 17) Thank you Lindsay for saying out loud what SO many moms feel.Â

Lindsay Teague Moreno's "Getting Noticed" has quickly become my "go to" instruction manual of sorts, on branding myself, growing my business, and getting results online. I always have it within reach. I have highlighted the book (in two colors), and underlined (in three colors!), with notes in the margins... there are THAT many important points. Lindsay gets right down to the nitty gritty, and does not dance around saying you could try doing your business this way or that way... she basically lays out exactly what you need to do. For me, Getting Noticed definitely shaved off weeks and months of a learning curve as well as plain old trial and error. I finally have the confidence and working knowledge for building my brand and my business on social media! Quick, powerful read! Thank you Lindsay, you're right... I ain't got time for that!

I have been following the business strategies of Lyndsay for about two years now. I knew that as soon as this book came out it would be a gold mine of information. I wasn't wrong. As a business owner, and mom, I am pretty certain this book was written with me in mind. Lyndsay writes like she is talking to you, her friend. She's cheeky, she's straight to the point, and literally gives you a blueprint on how to have a successful social media marketing strategy. Needless to say, I have not only recommended this book to any and all my friends who own businesses, but I have also purchased a few as gifts for some of my close mommy bosses.This will be a book I always keep on my desk and reference throughout the rest of my career.

It was an easy read and gave me so many real, practical steps to take toward making what I do on social media count and toward becoming intentional and honest in order to reach more people. I highly recommend it to any aspiring author, blogger, direct sales rep, or a woman with a vision of something new and exciting that is beyond her wildest dreams.

First of all, this book was a short and easy read. I think that is important to say because as a momtrepreneur myself, ain't no one got time for long, boring books that you have to think about, process and analyze. Lindsay is short, sweet, to the point, and gives practical advice that is perfect for any mom of her own business. The book is also witty and had me chuckling in a few spots. I highlighted multiple parts and I can't wait to go back and read it again to figure out how I am going to use all the information. I am super grateful for this book and I can't wait to see how it blesses my own business.

It seemed that I was still always gone or filling my house with people, but Lindsay Teague Moreno has been amazingly successful using social media to spread her knowledge.
