I am a long time fan of Susanna Kearsley, and I’ve read all of her books, Bellewether is a wonderful story that I wholeheartedly enjoyed. The main story of Lydia and Jean-Philippe is probably one of her finest, unfortunately I can’t say the same for the subplot of Charley and Sam, it felt forced while the main story has much to offer.We have a ghost as in The Shadowy Horses, but the interaction here is more “normal”, more plausible and that is nice.Compared to The Winter Sea and The Firebird this is a slow paced book, the story is built slower and it’s not until the very end that you can really gasp the beauty of the story.If you are reading Susanna Kearsley for the first time, this is a great read but I won’t recommend it for starters, read the Rose Garden, The Winter Sea or The Firebird first, and then come back to Bellewether so you can fully appreciate this particular story and her talent as a writer and storyteller.“But sometimes what we see is what we want to see, and not what’s really there. And that’s what gets us into trouble.” —BellewetherI received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Pre-ordered this book as I have any book written by Susanna Kearsley. Her books, like those written by my other favorites Diana Galbaldon, Karen White or Kathryn Kingsley to name a few, are a literary treat and worth reading more than once. That said, the not so subtle allusions to social justice, pc phraseology and the application of present day mores to correct and/or apologize for historical events is baffling. The double story lines plod along searching for relevancy but not quite achieving it. Of the two story lines, the historical characters were far more interesting. Despite that, the book was a tedious and a disappointing read. It saddens me that the incessant drum beat of activism appears inescapable. Bottom line: Ignorance and cruelty is never acceptable. It existed then and it does now, however, encouraging people to feel guilt over things they have in no way participated in or supported is a blatant attempt to manipulate their emotions.

Susanna Kearsley is on my list of favourite authors, and this book did not fail to deliver. Fascinating characters and a captivating tale, this book, as with all her books, was impressively researched. The one thing I didn’t appreciate was there was a little bit of grandstanding on some issues. Having read Ms. Kearsley’s remarks at the end, I understand that she wanted to highlight injustices, both fairly recent and some from further back in time, but it seemed as though she wanted to touch on everything, from a multitude of British wrongs, to slavery, residential schools, and the mistreatment of Acadians; all important issues, but at times I felt like I was reading a historical lecture. I would have preferred for the story to just tell itself. Having said that, I would still highly recommend the book.

I'm going to be very honest in this review. I have read every book Susanna Kearsley has written. There is only one book that I didn't like. That was Named of the Dragon. I gave up on that one. Everything else I either loved immensely or liked a lot.I have been impatiently waiting for the release of Bellwether for years. When it came out I saw several people mention that it was slow. Uh-oh I thought....I started it and at first it was fine. I was interested in it for sure. Then, it got slow! I was so upset. After all this waiting how could Susanna Kearsley give me a slow book!?! But I just couldn't give up that easily and I kept going. It got good again. Then it got a little slow again. Then it got good again. There were a couple slow areas, but way less and then it stayed good in my opinion! Towards the end it was amazing and I couldn't put it down!There is a twist at the end that I was happy about and I really was so enthralled during the last 30% of the book. I was glued to my Kindle! So, I'm happy and the book lived up to my expectations!I have to also say the subject written about, the historical aspect of the French Indian war is something I'd never read about, so I enjoyed this dip into history!I guess now I wait again for her next book.... 😀

i have read all her books and love them this one was so slow it just didnt fit together the Charley parts were just not interesting or germaine to the plot(s) i would not have continued to read had i not enjoyed her other work so much kept waiting for it to pick up it never did

This was a decent intro to Islamic history from a Western historian's point of view. Most books about Islam that are written by Western scholars tend to be overly critical (in my opinion). Generally I prefer to read an anthropologist's take on Islamic issues if I'm to read a piece written from a non-Muslim, simply because they are less biased. I took a chance with this one, and found it to still be pretty good.

Silverstein's monograph is a fairly quick read, and well worth the effort. The history is rather sparse, as the title implies, but it makes a nice companion to something more detailed like Berkey's "The Formation of Islam." Well-written throughout, value comes particularly in the analysis and insight developed in the later chapters and conclusion, though some may find it "controversial." Highly recommended.

The Book is so easy to understand and provides a wonderful gateway into the importance and history of Islamic religion and society. By giving historical background, the author clarifies the reasons and meanings behind 20th and 21st century events. There are many maps, photos, and short excerpts included in the book so readers can easily understand what the author is explaining.

Appreciated what I learned, the quality of the writing, the nature of the analysis. Realize that it is a "short introduction" but felt that I got a very good overview. Excellent read. Thank you.

This book is valuable not only for a historical overview of Islamic tradition, but for the insightful last chapter on current Islam and world perception of it. This book is respectful of the religion while being forthright about some of the less pretty parts of its history. The style of the book is very accessible... some scholars may say it is too broad and not deep enough, but it met my needs... I may want to read a multi-volume work in Islam in the future, but not this weekend.

Silverstein, an Oxford professor, writes with the clarity and simplicity that I would love to emulate. His exquisite style makes reading this complex history much easier than it might be in less capable hands. As for the accuracy of his historical account, I have no basis for judgment. Nevertheless, I would recommend this slight volume to anyone seeking a brief introduction to Islam. A good counterweight and a book I highly recommend is Timothy Gianotti's "In the Light of a Blessed Tree: Illuminations of Islamic Belief, Practice, and History," another wonderfully clear and incisive brief study of Islam, written by a former Catholic, now a Muslim. Gianotti's book includes autobiographical information describing how he came to Islam.

Most people are surprised that I am reading a book on Islam written by a westerner, that too, being a Muslim myself. But this is a very honest summary of the cultural and historical impact and importance of Islam. Its a very honest assessment and it got me hooked on Islamic history so much that I couldnt stop browsing the net for two weeks, scouring for more info. Very informative and provides several arguments and counter arguments, so that you can decide for yourself.

It's sometimes a difficult slog, but that's because the history of Islam is long and very convoluted. It's necessary reading for those who wish to have a deeper understanding of Islam. He proves points throughout the book then sums them up at the end. Clear and as concise as can be to do justice to a history most westerners have almost no knowledge of.

It's an ok finch book but there's too much "always" and "never" language in it, especially when I do more research and learn that when this book says "never", it's more akin to either "not recommended" or "only in moderation." It's a decent first book but you will need more information than what's in here. Mostly it left me wanting more....

I bought this book for my elderly father who just acquired his first pair of Zebra Finches. He knew nothing about these birds but he said this book helped him immensely. I just flipped through it before presenting it to him and noticed it was very detailed. There were exact photos of different seeds the birds eat and also lots of other very detailed information. I give it a 2 thumbs up.

I love the book. It told me things about my Zebra finches I didn't know. Step by step I am learning about them and am delighted

This is very Informative. I have had Zebra Finches for years and I never bothered to look up anything about them. But this book caught my curiosity. it tells everything you need to know about the bird. It has been a good read. I like it a lot.

Interesting and informative.

Contains a lot of information. Definitely should get this book if you are purchasing Zebra Finches. They mate and lay eggs and I had no idea they would hatch. I now have four babies and had to buy another cage to separate the males and females.

The book is extremely brief in content, and focuses around the general information -- that is within reach via the net -- related to zebra finches.It is by no means a complete pet owner's manual as the cover claims! For instance, no details of zebra finch varieties or mutations are provided; what is a phaeo zebra finch, or how does a black breast black face male look like...I would however, recommend the book to a new comer with no background in Zebra Finches.

The book is informative and I was able to know how to care for my pet finch and what I need to do to provide the beat care for them.

This book is funny. If you follow Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, you would expect that. I bought the book figuring that would be enough. And the humor alone would have been a nice 4* review. But this book is more than funny. The authors clearly have an abiding passion for science. And for educating. And for humanity. And it all comes through.The most interesting part of the book comes at the end, when they point out that the people working on these technologies are anonymous academics who just happen to work in fields that could change the world. I suspect, though I don't know, that this revelation surprised them. It surprised me. It's crazy enough that humanity is figuring out how to mine asteroids or 3D print new livers. But it's refreshing and affirming and amazing to realize that the people actually doing this are people who decided "You know what I want to do with my life? Get us to Mars." And they worked hard, got their PhDs, and started trying to get us to Mars.This idea is so amazing. You know who can change the world? You! Or me! Or my kids! Or your kids! The people changing the world right now are the people who decided to change the world.Buy this book. Get inspired. Get some laughs. And feel good about your fellow humans.

If you enjoy SMBC, then you will (very likely) enjoy this book. The authors do a good job of injecting their humor into well-done explanations of possible future technologies. They do a very fair job of evaluating what a possible future technology will do, its benefits and possible downsides, and they get a good spread of experts. The topics covered range from energy to biology to space travel.I didn't notice any major errors in any of the areas I was familiar with and so would give pretty high confidence in all that they said. The one minor error that I noticed was in the fusion section (I happen to work in magnetically confined fusion). They said that to heat plasmas "They electrocute it, microwave it, and fire a beam of neutrons at it". We most assuredly do not fire a beam of neutrons at it, but we fire a beam of neutrals (that is a particle with no net charge, or non-plasma). This technology is quite interesting on its own (look up netural beam injection on wikipedia). This is a common misinterpretation as "neutron" and "neutral" are similar sounding, though.Otherwise, I definitely recommend the book, but I like the style of humor. If you don't like SMBC, then you probably won't like the style of the book.

I adore this book. It teaches about cutting edge technology while interjecting humor. I cannot count the number of times I said “what, really?” while reading it. You may annoy those around you by insisting they listen while you read out loud whole sections. I was flabbergasted by how much information I was absorbing while simultaneously being entertained.Each section outlines advancements in an area of science or technology, and then muses about how those advancements might change the world. I teach physics, and I learned a great deal from this book. The biology section really astonished me, as I do not keep up with that area at all. AND there is a comprehensive bibliography if you care to delve deeper into any of the areas of interest.Topics covered include cheap access to space, asteroid mining, fusion power, programmable matter (woah, yeah this is mind blowing), robotic construction, augmented reality, synthetic biology (I knew absolutely nothing in the section, I read it three times), precision medicine, bioprinting and brain-computer interfaces. Then there is a section of topics that were considered and rejected.I bought it originally to support SMBC, but have already been back to purchase three more copies for friends and family. If you need a gift for a nerd or science geek, you have found the perfect book.

I enjoy reading books that focus on future technologies, and while I enjoy most of them I have to say that this one has been my favorite to read so far because it injects so much humor into the discourse. To be clear, Soonish presents discussions of actual upcoming technologies, but I was glad that the authors used the same sense of humor from the SMBC comics when writing the chapters. Also, I was pleasantly surprised at how much ground the book covers. I would definitely recommend this science, technology, and humor enthusiasts.

I really enjoyed this book. Not only are many different facets of technology explained clearly and thoroughly, but the comics add a good dose of humor and even aid in the explanations. An excellent choice to get caught up on the many exciting fields of mature and emerging science.

Soonish is that rarest of creatures, a popsci book that doesn't dumb anything down to the point that it's incorrect. Well-researched and formatted, "Soonish" examines 10 categories of technological advance and breaks them (and their implications!) down in a way that lay readers can understand (albeit probably lay readers that were studying for their AP Chem exam instead of getting to 2nd base behind the bleachers). It's probably the best popsci book I've ever read, and one of the best nonfiction in general.The light and irreverent tone helps make the material seem less daunting, but don't think that this is a comedy or humor book, or you'll be disappointed.There are a few things that could have been better (in particular, I would have loved a "further reading" section for each chapter or section), but all in all this is an amazing book that I'm recommending to all of my friends (though not lending them my copy, thieves).

This book is written in a very entertaining and highly informative way. It does a great job of breaking down things that may be complex. It is easy to see that the authors have done a lot of research and presented things a way that I may not of thought of.

I've studied classical music my whole life and this book opened up new composers and new types of music; it's a constant discovery. I bought this for my daughter but kept it for myself!

Great read

This is a history of classical music beginning with the purely vocal plainchant in the time of Pope Gregory 1. It covers the early development of such music through to the music of the female cleric Hildegard, in the middle ages. It ends modern music with 20th century British opera, and features a note on Benjamin Britten. Its final chapter is on contemporary music which features musicians such as John Cage and Terry Riley (keyboardist). It describes subjects such as the development of the string quartet, and chamber groups. For every form, the book features a master practitioner and has a brief description and critical assessment of the music. This is a fine, all-round book though not one that is suitable if you are going for depth. Nonetheless, an enjoyable book for any time.

A very nice chronologically oriented review of the evolution of classical music. The book highlights key works of every composer through the ages with individual profiles and interesting facts. The graphics are splendid. A commendable addition to any audiophiles collection as well as those looking to explore classical.

Absolutely incredible amount and quality of information. Gorgeous presentation, easy to read, colorful, nicely organized, a definite home run. Opens doors for those looking to poke their head in classical music. Good job, DK!
