I purchased this book for my son who is in Dental Assistant Training and hopes one day to become a dentist. I find this book excellent for anyone starting in the field of dental assistant or as a review book for someone who is already an assistant. I am just learning and borrowed the book and had to buy it. It covers everything in detail from anatomy,infection control,patient care, radiography, all forms of denistry procedures needed and much more. There are exercises and flash cards and 623 pages full of information. A GREAT BOOK. Its a must for any dental assistant. There are alot of pictures, layouts and diagrams. I enjoy every minute of it.

Great book for learning or review. Covers just about everything. Great photos and explanations. I would definitely recommend this book for beginning dental assistants, or those who just want to brush-up and/or familiarize themselves with all areas of dentistry. Also great for certification prep.

Greg does an phenomenal job of researching and narrating (in extremely, detailed chronological order) the rise of Van Halen. The only third party biography on the band that you'll ever want or need, as you will walk away firmly satisfied. The narrative is written with journalist neutrality - not taking sides, but sharing just the facts. The notorious riffs between the brothers and DLR are deeply rooted in their first encounters with each other. Many have asked how DLR was tapped for the band. But, he actually brought vision and flare that complimented and completed the virtuoso playing of the brothers. It is unlikely that either would have succeeded to their zenith without the other. This is a statement that I would not have made prior to reading this book. I opted for the audible audio version since it is in narrative form. Very easy to set down and pick up later. But you won't want to set it down that much as it is a thoroughly interesting account.

I just finished this book, having consumed it as soon as it arrived. (Well, as fast as I could considering I work full time and have three little kids and a wife, but you know what I mean). I am a Van Halen fan and gained a deeper respect and appreciation for the band after reading this book. I've always loved their albums but have taken them for granted until now. I was three years old in 1978, so pretty much every memory involving the band or hearing their name and their music came with the assumption they are undisputedly awesome. They defined hard rock for my entire life. Just the name "Van Halen" was synonymous with ass-kicking.Now, having read this book, I realized what set them apart from so many awful clones: They worked their asses off for years before hitting it big, against the crazy tide of commercial music that hated what they represented. It seems like most bands since Van Halen want fame immediately and are unwilling to put in the work to build their name up. Having read this book it is absolutely NO WONDER they exploded within a year of their debut album hitting the stores. I absolutely loved the stories from the "big" bands at the time for whom Van Halen opened -- Black Sabbath, Journey, etc. -- regretting having to follow these young upstarts. Van Halen were starving by the time they landed a tour, and were primed and ready. The big bands at that time -- and no disrespect is implied here -- hadn't seen anything like them and were on automatic pilot, it seems. (Such a kick that Sabbath were supporting an album called "Never Say Die" when they were clearly dying a slow death night after night.)Probably the biggest thing I came away with after reading Van Halen Rising was a deep respect for David Lee Roth. Look, you either love him or hate him. I've vacillated between one or the other in the years of being a VH fan. I now can say I love the guy. He's taken his licks since Day One when he took voice lessons in school. No one has ever praised VH for vocals the way one praises Led Zeppelin, Journey, etc. But without a doubt were it not for his style, incredible DRIVE, and an unfathomable amount of faith and hope (and those aren't just the names of a couple of strippers in Vegas) Van Halen as we know it would not exist. He changed their look and broadened their soundscape. He compensated for his vocals with incredible charisma. The man is smart and savvy, and I can tell he knew he was lucky when Ed and Al let him into the fold. They no doubt knew they were lucky to have a guy fight so hard to help them become a best-selling act.The interviews are well-sourced. I loved hearing Ted Templeman's stories, including that he wanted to replace Roth with Sammy Hagar but relented when he heard Roth's lyrics. To this day that's one of the biggest differences between those two iterations of Van Halen. Good to hear from Michael Anthony -- who I felt sorry for when I saw the pics to the clothes he had to wear the first concert he played in -- and good to hear from Mark Stone, the guy he replaced.I'm giving this 4, not 5 stars for aesthetic reasons only. This looks like a vanity press, self-published book. I know it is not endorsed by VH, I get it. But the ink on some of the pages were lighter than others and at times somewhat difficult to read. I would have loved for this to have been published by a better publisher, and certainly in hardcover. It was clearly written by a fan who took it upon himself to fill a void that many of us wanted filled, but the quality/presentation of the book FELT like it was written by a fan, if that means anything. I'm that specific kind of book nerd. So sue me. Of course most of the photos in here were not professionally done -- probably taken from a friend at the party, but as a rock bio fan I would have killed for a middle section of some color photos.But I hope you hear from this review that the quality of the story itself is very satisfying and made me appreciate Van Halen more than ever. I read that the author is considering a sequel. I would LOVE to read about the rest of the Roth years in similar detail.Thanks Greg Renoff for taking the time to write this book.

I saw Van Halen at least 20 times at backyard parties and small venues that they sold out themselves. I then saw a dozen shows of the first tour alone. This book nails what I saw and the people like Rudy Lieren who was Ed's longtime guitar tech that I spoke with. His research is truly amazing, his sources are listed throughout this book. It takes you from the band members early days right up until they get signed. It's the most comprehensive book on those early days I have ever seen. A must for VH fans or any rock fans.

First and foremost, I am a lifelong Van Halen fan since 1978.I have been following the band since I moved to L.A., and my youth was formed around the music scene there since 1978 to 1985.The book provides me some refreshed memories of backyard parties and auditorium gatherings where bands played live. I wish I had seen the mighty Van Halen in its formative years but this book takes you back in time.I have my memories of what bands I saw but now I can certainly see where all the luster and bluster for hard rock comes from. I just saw them in concert this year and was glad that the book plus the tour made the summer even more special for me, as a fan.In researching the young Van Halen's youth, particularly bringing us in to their teens years, you can learn so much about who they are today.Especially their relationship as brothers, as band mates to each other, and their relationship with one David Lee Roth.I am glad Greg Renoff put this well written story of my favorite band together.I am on my second re-read and much like Dave's Crazy from the Heat, I cannot put it down.If you love music, and if you love success stories with great background I strongly recommend Van Halen Rising!

As a music lover and miserable wannabe player I read a lot of this type of book. In fact I read Sammy's and Valerie's works quite a while ago. I don't know what to even say about this effort. I've never seen anything like it. It's SO well-researched, and written by not just a fan but someone that knows something about music.I jumped on this because of the great reviews and never considered that it might not be a complete biography of the band. You click on this before all synapses are firing if you are some of us. I was in a world of book-reading where "it's too good to be true". Then we were done and it dawned on me that the title of the book indicated the scope. Bummer, but it is still one of the most fulfilling books about one of my music heroes that I have ever read and I am going to scour the landscape for another Renoff project.

After reading this book I would not like to try thatching! Not because the works hard or I don't like heights - its just I would not like to go to that amount of effort and still have a roof that leaked!Jacqueline Fearn covers a history of thatch in England with surprises such as smoke-blacken thatch reveiling a practice of only stripping the top weathered layers of thatch as part of the maintenance cycle. There are a series of Black and white photographs showing experts in action and a very detail description of the process. Its a process I'd be happy to leave to the experts though... If you do want to try your own thatch this is a good starting point with a very good bibliography - even mentioning the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service's guide to fare safety in thatched buildings.

I was rather mislead by the subtitle of this work of essays, since it seems to imply it contains the "texts" and its "transformations" which was what interested me about the book in the first place. The essays are great and far ranging in scope.

Maybe I'm being unfair (I actually did not read the essays because I returned it immediately), but the title and the description of the book suggested that the actual TEXTS of the grail cycle would be included in the book; they are not. This book is just a collection of essays ABOUT the grail cycle, which is great if that's what you're looking for; if you're looking for the grail stories, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Look elsewhere, for the love of god, look elsewhere.

When your back is against the wall not knowing which direction to turn without hitting a dead end, yeah you come up with a plan real quick. Twixted and twined and put through the wringer. Great book to get yourself organized and get your priorities straight. There really is some great advice and exercises in this book to get you on track. I was struggling with finding the time to work on my personal art projects and this was the kick in the butt I needed to get moving.

I have been on a personal crusade to be more efficient and beat the monster called procrastination. It’s so easy to put projects off when I feel that I have time but just don’t feel like working on them. I’ve been trying mini habits to build up my commitments and bullet journaling to get myself primed for action. I am an advocate that there is no sure way for planning success and that everyone needs to find what works best.Years ago, I read Brian Tracy’s book Eat That Frog! I used several of his suggestions to avoid procrastination and to motivate myself back on track. The problem is that I fell off and needed a refresher. Brian just released the 3rd addition of Eat That Frog! With enhanced chapters highlighting the good and ugly of technology. I enjoyed the book, even more, this time because I had tried more motivational tricks and tips over the years and no one gives sound advice better than Brian Tracy. Eat That Frog! Gobbles up any other resource on procrastination or goal setting in the market. I encourage you to return to the 21 time tried suggestions for becoming a better you to meet surpass goals and scare the procrastination monster away.I admire Brian’s analogy of the frog on the outset of his book. He likens your “frog” to your biggest and most critical task that you need to accomplish. It’s also the goal that you are most likely to procrastinate about and put on the back burner. Brian eloquently says that "It has been said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that it is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long”. Always have clarity about what you want and make lists of categorized goals so that you can rank them and eat the biggest frogs first thing every morning.Setting and achieving goals is a process and won't happen overnight. You need to build new routines and habits to maintain structure and guide you. Brian shows us the 3 "D's" of new habits to jumpstart our journey. They include the decision, discipline, and determination. Once these behaviors are ingrained, we can start to visualize where we want to be and stop procrastinating on what is hindering our success.Successful people know that they can’t focus on everything at once. Goals need to be ranked, and some may never even be touched. They are often "filler" goals that can be delegated or deleted off the list. We should focus on the goals that will give us the biggest bang for our buck and will have a meaningful impact on our lives. This process makes us more productive and leaves us more time for the precious areas of our lives. Too often people think that getting things done equals productivity and instead they are just busy bees flitting around accomplishing little. The author explains most things very clearly. I sometimes wish things were organized a little differently or introduced more explicitly for the sake of clarity. Also, there are some errors that can make things confusing. (Like an answer that doesn't match the question asked, or an incorrect formula here and there [The formula for carbonate on p 147 is incorrect.]) Mostly a helpful book, though, especially if used alongside actual class coursework.

Oh my goodness, if your desire is to pass your college chemistry class this book is a MUST! After leaving chemistry class I was a lost soul, I actually considered changing my major so that I didn't have to take this class. People, this book is GOLD, and you know the value of gold! I failed my fist quiz and it's because I didn't have this book yet, since then we've had 5 tests and my lowest grade is a "B" I'm extremely pleased! Thank you Mr. Curran, I certainly wasn't a fan of ANY science, but I now love chemistry, I would buy any book with your name on it, book is truly "God Sent"

Got this to aid homeschool studies in chemistry for 8th grader but it was setting on the shelf until he took a chemistry class at a local Think Tank and they were using the book.You will need to supplement content with addition resources if student doesn't easily "get" chemistry. Even if they do, they will still need supplemental resources.Clean pages (not busy and distracting). Good testing (lesson and chapter) included in the book which is why it gets a 5 from me.

Son had Chem 1 in college last year. He did well but wasn’t very confident. He was concerned he would forget stuff over the summer before taking Chem 2 this year. He worked through this book over the summer and it totally built his confidence. He now says Chem 2 is easy and he just excitedly texted me his first exam score. It was great!

This book is much like the Homework Helpers Physics -- great for beginners and in conjunction with real textbooks, but not as a standalone. Both are just too short and miss some vital topics, and don't go into enough depth on some. Very good buy, though, if used correctly or just learning the basics for the sake of learning.

This book is SUPERB on the topics it does contain. It studies mechanics, electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics and heat, and nuclear/atomic physics. All of these topics are written well and explained clearly; like I said, it's very good on the topics it DOES contain. The only problem I've found with this book is that it doesn't include anything on Relativity or Quantum Mechanics. Yes, it does go in depth about light, photons, and the wave-particle duality of light. Very helpful overall in the basics, but it doesn't go into the really advanced topics. I can't tell if this was meant for College Physics or high-school physics........either way, the explanations were great and it is, really, a great book. If you're taking physics on any level, get this book.

This provides a concise and clear explanation of chemistry concepts to students (and concerned parents). I recommend it to parents at my parent-teacher conferences because kids learn at different paces and have short attention spans in class. If they don't understand it the first time in class or are confused with the background section on take-home worksheets, this book is there to help. And of course, sometimes seeing something explained in a different way is all it takes for the light bulb to go on.

I like the Homework Helpers series (have the Chemistry). Clean pages (meaning not so busy one doesn't know where to direct one's eye to understand the material) with chapter testing.If something is not understood, there is a plethora of online resources to supplement.
