AIIEEEE! I wish I had a million dollars so I can buy all these neato books here at AMAZON! Anyway...My last purchase: NAVAL WARGAMING by Hague. What can I say? I think this book is great! I owned his first work when I was a kid and loved his section on building and war gaming with home made model ships. This work, builds on that old work and "Pumps it up, MON!" If you are a naval wargamer, you might find that these rules and suggestions are to your liking. Many Naval game rules are too complicated. Hague gives you non complex rules that gets you playing so you can think about and discuss military naval history. Hey, who wants to spend one week reading detailed naval wargame rules that you already forgotten by the time you finish the magazine sized rules for some naval games? Ok, maybe you are a math genius who digs big time doing calculations in your head. Me? I like to start fighting sea battles! Working out how deep your search light can penetrate the fog bank at 2 AM on the North sea during winter is well...YAWNISH! Just tell me where the dang Battleship is and prep. the guns! Anyway, glad I bought this book. Buy it Mon, and don't try to bottle up my naval fleet or else!!!

I love Miss Lemon and she's in this one! We learn that she has a sister with an issue at a boarding house. Items are coming up missing. Hercule Poirot steps in and solves the mystery, but first he has to untangle the lies. What I love most about this novel it is the diversity in the household of students. That is taken out in the BBC TV series verion of this novel. The plot is okay. It isn't terrible but it isn't great. The characters are what saves this story. I won't spoil the secret backstories, but they are interesting! There are some stereotypes when it comes to race in this novel, but I think that is to be expected of a novel written in the 50's. The stereotypes would be unacceptable today. This isnt one of her best novels and if you've never read any of her stuff I wouldn't start with this one. Overall, this is a quick easy read with interesting characters and a decent plot.

I gave this 5 stars because she deserves it.The characters are all colorful, and you felt like you were right there watching and listening to what was doing on. When Miss Lemon's sister Mrs. Hubbard was in a stressful situation at a Hotsel she had just got ,her job was managing the daily operations of meals and supplies that would be needed to keep the students that rent their rooms.What a collage of students that lived there. And the woman that owned the houses,Mrs. Nicoletis it was two made into one big house with two house numbers. One side for the boys and the other for the girls , but one big common room downstairs for both to do homework and had meals together and socialize with each other they were not allowed in each other's bedrooms. There was stealing and murder going on in those two houses and M Poriot was called in to help solve the mysterious things going on. It is so much you would stay up late trying to find a spot to stop.You won't be disappointed.

My copy had a defective disk that caused hanging and skipping, but the other 4 disks functioned normally. I bought this on CD because Audible did not currently have the title available and I am listening to all the Poirot books and this was the next title in chronological order. Hugh Fraser does a great job as usual with his reading and characterizations. It is a post WW II Poirot Mystery centering around Poirot's secretaries sister and strange goings on at a boarding house for students. I tend to like the later Poirot mysteries better than the earlier Hastings years as it seemed to me that Christie was trying imitate A. C. Doyle's Sherlock Holmes in the earlier novels, but this title frankly is a bit on the mediocre side. I will give her credit for providing a mystery that was very unpredictable and not formulaic, but the characters--except for Mrs. Hubbard were somewhat forgettable--and there was the usual romantic subplot with some of the lesser characters. If you love the Poirot series I still recommend the title, but if you are only an occasional Poirot follower then there are definitely some better titles in the series.

Agatha Christie (1890-1976) liked to use nursery rhymes as titles for her mystery novels. She does so in "Hickory Dickory, Dock" a Hercule Poirot novel first published in 1955. The Plot: Miss Lemon, the picky secretary of Poirot, makes three mistakes while typing for her master. She is upset because her sister Mrs. Hubbard reports thefts occurring at the youth hostel where she is employed. Poirot investigates the thefts. A young lady named Celia Austin confesses to the crimes but is soon found dead. It is thought she committed suicide but Poirot believes it was murder most foul. She died with a drug taken from St.Catherine's Hospital where Celia was employed. There is a large cast of suspects consisting of the persons who live at the hostel. One of the most prominent is Nigel Chapman who reports Celia as being a kleptomaniac. Strange clues such as electric lights which were turned off on the premises, fake British passports and green ink spilled on a letter are important in the solving of the complex case. There are three murders in the short 217 page novel! The book has several faults:a. There are too many characters to keep track of in this short book.b. The characters personalities do not register in the reader's mind. They are chess pieces moved across the mystery board by Christie.c. Poirot's abilities are not challenged as in his great cases. This case is often boring! Give Dame Agatha a "C" for this one!

Overall a very solid Poirot book. Poirot is investigating a seemingly benign theft matter in a student house (where the manager is a family relation of Poirot's secretary Ms Lemon), but which progressively takes on a more dramatic turn. There are a lot of colourful and interesting characters here with a good dose of humour. Poirot is present throughout though there are big investigative chunks led not by Poirot, but by the police themselves, which would be my only criticism, as I'd have preferred Poirot to take on a stronger lead for the investigation. But as usual in Poirot's book, Poirot himself follows his own ideas, and can seem to remain very passive, whereas in fact he always end up putting everything together at the end. Lastly, and that'd be a mild criticism: you can feel that Christie is more at ease dealing with British or "western" characters, rather than other more faraway nationalities.

I'm a huge fan of Dame Agatha. I am continually tossed up as to who I like better - Poirot or marple. Either way, you won't lose.

Another one of those that you can't tell who did it till the end. Poirot's efficient secretary, Miss Lemon has a sister who is head of a youth hostel in London. Seems that the place isn't what it seems nor are some of the students. It starts with petty thefts and then escalates to murder. A test for Poirot and the police.

Agatha Christie is a genius and her detective is masterful, of course it is Hercule poirot.

Banished explores geographic restrictions that are placed on people in the city -- often homeless people and people of color. The authors use a variety of sources: records from the police and the courts, archives from the city council, interviews with prosecutors, defenders, and judges, and -- most vividly -- interviews with people who are subject to the restrictions.The book focuses on Seattle, which uses a number of geographic restrictions. It should interest anyone concerned about poverty, homelessness, criminal justice, and civil liberties.Very often probation (or a deferred sentence) for a minor offense includes an order to Stay Out of Areas of Prostitution (SOAP) or to Stay Out of Drug Areas (SODA). Hundreds of people are also given trespass admonishments, with orders not to go to one or many parks or not to go to one or many businesses.Violating these orders subjects a person to arrest, trial, and jail. And yet obeying the orders often isolates the person from his or her community and makes it difficult to get social services, and so most people covered by the orders do not obey them.The scope of the system is large (and therefore costly). In Seattle, for example, criminal trespass charges led to over 10,000 jail days in 2005. And the city attorney estimated that jailing SODA violators cost the city about $1 million from March 2006 to December 2007.Thoroughly researched and eye-opening.

This is a very readable book about a social problem being faced -- and dealt with badly -- by cities all over the country. The authors explain that homeless and street people are being effectively banished from cities and parts of cities at great cost and little social benefit. This is clearly a book worth reading for anyone interested in this issue.

Had to read this for a class at the UW but enjoyed it a lot. Being from Seattle I found it very valuable to know about this social problem that is occurring here and all over the United States.

I didn't think it would have lots of highlighting but then again the price I paid says it all. Thank you for the details & honesty, I would re-purchase again!

This is a great book if you are at all interested in legal/political issues, homelessness, poverty, and of course the main topic of the book - 'banishment', or the (legal) exclusion of individuals from certain places.The book is about the city of Seattle, and being from Seattle myself, I thought that was very cool.It's well written, interesting, educational, plenty of first-hand interviews, and easy to read.The only reason I give it 4/5 stars is because I can't say I 'love' it - I wouldn't have picked this up and read it unless it was assigned by a teacher (which for me, it was)...but I enjoyed it nonetheless :)

Read this book on recommendation from one of her students, might have been assigned reading.Book repeated itself in every chapter. For the amount of research done, I was hoping to hear some fresh ideas on what could be done for/about the homeless situation in Seattle. The authors idea (and appeared to be only solution) was to build government housing for homeless to do drugs and drink alcohol in.....The language used was an attempt to evoke sympathy and empathy for the homeless, which we should as a society be concerned about. However I can only remember one or two lines that attempted to sympathize with the communities affected by the issue. No talk of when "disorder" urinates on your child's toys or leaves trash in public parks.The sympathy framing is extensive and overdone. Would you empathize with a an individual that got so drunk he had to be removed from the bar, then got in his car and got pulled over for DUI after he smashed your mailbox......now this individual is "banished" from the bar, banished from his car, and banished from the person's residence where the mailbox was destroyed. Maybe we should build him public housing so he can drink more.

The only reason I purchased this book was for a college course; it was required. It was complete crap!!! The entire book was the same story told over and over and over like a remake (meaning The Evil Dead has been remade twice, which equals 3 versions and the original did NOT need one remake, let alone two remakes). It was a 'poor me' for those who got into trouble with the law and how they had no recourse for action to right the wrong. That is unfair but so is life. You know what else is unfair? That not only did I have to read this book but I had to write a 900 word book report - for a senior college course (capstone). Seriously, the book title Banished tells you everything you need to know...

This is a classic, of course. Elegantly written, insightful, philosophically sophisticated, with a lot of insight for those who want to understand international relations. Castlereagh simply wanted to maintain a balance of power in Europe following the Napoleonic Wars in order to facilitate Britain's security. Metternich, representing an Austria that was in the center of Europe and could not simply seek a discrete balance, wanted a conservative social contract at a time when the forces of nationalism were ultimately destined to sunder the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They wanted the same thing for different reasons. Castlereagh, dealing with resistance from his own Parliament, wanted a realpolitical solution. Metternich, the ultimate practitioner of "Machtpolitik," understood nonetheless the importance of ideas and ideology. I bought and read the paperback edition of A World Restored more than thirty years ago. I bought the hardback so that I could read it again without having to physically hold the book together. A necessary read for those truly interested in international relations.

Dr. Kissinger wrote an informative book on the Napoleonic Wars and their resolution at the Congress of Vienna and subsequent conferences. The balance of power after 1814 and 1815 was achieved with great diplomatic skill and the wisdom not to punish France too heavily. The machinations of Austria through her cunning foreign minister are particularly well-analyzed. Some of the writing is a bit too abstract or else I am not smart enough to understand it after one or two readings. The book ends before we see the mistakes Austria made in 1914, but those mistakes are obvious now. I did not realize how Czar Alexander's views changed so much or vacillated, and how enthralled he was by Metternich. This book makes more sense when we consider the chaos of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. This book ought to be and likely is required reading for diplomats. This is good history, and like all history allows us to see the mistakes and triumphs of others clearly.

The knowledge, thought and hypotheses are remarkable. For any interested in the post Napoloeonic period and the Congress of Vienna, a thesis not to be missed. Outstanding.

Henry Kissinger's "A World Restored: Metternich, Castlereagh and the Problems of Peace 1812-22" is not for just anyone interested in that period of history. I read about a fourth of Kissinger's "White House Years" ("W H Y"), and loved his writing and clear thinking in that book (the book was destroyed in a fire). But it was apparently written long after "A World Restored" was written, because the excellent writing in "W H Y" didn't exist in his earlier book. In "W H Y", I could just follow his thoughts and not have to re-order or evaluate them to fully understand (and appreciate them). BUT, in "A World Restored", I had to constantly mull over sentences to get what he was trying to say. So this book is for very intelligent readers who already have a good grasp of the historical situation. Kissinger delves deeply here, but with inadequate writing skills, in my opinion. I'm reminded of what I decided was the difference between me and the truly brilliant students at Stanford. They could intuit what the professor was trying to say, but I could only get what he was actually saying.

My son-n-law is a great respecter of Henry Kissinger and a history buff. He was very pleased to receive this book.

He is one of the most widely sought after, erudite, and respected priests active in the world of Roman Catholic monasticism. A select bibliography of his books and articles spans ten full pages, covering more than 45 years of publication. Fr. Casey has lectured and led retreats in more than forty countries on 6 continents. He was a primary force and the principal author behind the 1990 revision of the “The Constitutions and Statutes of the Order of Cistercians of Strict Observance.” He served as prior of the Tarrawarra Monastery in Australia from 1988 to 2003 and vocation director from 1998 to 2012. He has written extensively on the care and formation of novices and has contributed significant, substantial scholarship to the field of Benedictine studies.Given all this, I approached his latest work, Grace: On the Journey to God(Paraclete Press, 2018) expecting to be guided by a wise and insightful mind. And, in almost every way, that expectation did not go unmet. These chapters are drawn from various retreats Casey has led in religious communities around the world. As such, they delve deeply into matters of the spiritual life, leading the reader to focus upon fifteen discrete, yet related aspects of the spiritual journey. The opening chapter, “The Grace of Discontinuity,” is one of the strongest, reminding the reader that conversion is always the starting point for the spiritual journey. Our spiritual lives are permeated with a discontinuity that is conversion. Casey adroitly notes, however, that because conversion “has its origin outside ourselves, mostly it is unwelcome” (7).With the exception of the appropriateness of beginning with a chapter on Conversion and concluding with chapters on Community and Communion, there seems little reason for the reader to feel compelled to take this book in the order in which it is presented. There is an almost unavoidable unevenness to the chapters, likely due to their having been composed at different times and for different audiences. I was especially appreciative of the chapter on the leisure, which Casey calls “a time and space of freedom and recuperation, in which the deep self can find fuller expression and, eventually, reach its perfection” (147). Drawing upon the work of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (of TED Talks fame) and his psychological concept of “flow,” Casey builds an effective case for the essential quality of leisure for the spiritual life. “Leisure is purposeful and personal activity,” he writes, “that aspires to be marked by flow. It is not slackness or idleness or the pursuit of recreational activities. It is, above all, being attentive to the present moment, open to all its implications, living it to the full” (151).Likewise, in his chapter, “The Grace of Faith,” Casey offers keen insight into the nature of prayer. Prayer, he suggests, “could almost be defined as a period in which we deliberately give up control—and maybe that is why we are so reluctant to engage in it” (131). In many such places throughout the book Casey exhibits an understanding, not only of prayer, but also of the very human condition of the one who prays.This book is not without its share of problems. As I have already noted, it is drawn from material developed for, and aimed at, what the author calls “religious communities.” It seems likely that most, if not all, of those communities are Roman Catholic, specifically Roman Catholic monastic houses. Because of the many similarities between the author’s life and that of Thomas Merton, Casey is often compared favorably with him. There were numerous points when I found myself reminded by him of something in Merton. And, likely because of their similar ecclesial backgrounds, there was a certain je ne sais quoi about the book that felt oddly familiar. My youth was highly influenced by Merton and this was familiar terrain and comfortable territory. Still, fifty years have passed since Fr. Merton last put pen to paper and some parts of the book have an almost doctrinaire quality with a strong adherence to tradition that, as a 21st century reader, I found unsettling.

A dozen years is barely a batting of an eyelash in the history of Fez. So don't feel this book is dated because it is 12 or 15 years old. Ms Clarke's reaction, and that of her husband to Fez was profound and life changing. Their decision to purchase and restore an old Riad in the heart of the Medina took a rare mix of courage, recklessness, determination and successful enterprise. My wife and I have only been to Fez once, and it was perhaps the most memorable part of a month long independent ramble through Morocco. We were enchanted by the artistic and cultural pungency of the city. The author went one better and nearly went native after a fashion. Despite the headwinds of local government bureaucracy and cultural barriers on both sides of the equation, the foreigners' dedication to respectful preservation and willingness to admire and embrace the city's customs and spirit earn respect and support. The craftsmen and workers employed in the project became their friends as well as their employees. It's a charming tale. One worth recording. While I wish there were more illustrations, one can find much that is pertinent on their websites and other Moroccan sources.Her book is not just about architecture, but weaves in a lot of her experiences in getting to know and be known by a wide range of Moroccans and a few expats. It is a thoughtful and worthwhile journey

I truly enjoyed this book, and the people in it were interesting and likable. I like Suzanna's writing style, and enjoyed the cultural information that is included throughout the book. I also very much enjoyed the descriptions of the riad and the renovations. I was disappointed that the blog mentioned in the book appears to have been reincarnated as more a commercial venture than the personal blog that I imagine it was while the book was being written. I visited, hoping to see photos of the riad and the renovations, etc., but was unable to find anything like that buried in the newish blog.As someone else mentioned, the Kindle version of this book is an absolute mess. It badly needs to be edited. Randomly interspersed throughout sentences are fragments that include the book title and page numbers. If this had happened once or twice it could be overlooked, but there are many instances where a sentence is interrupted by the title and page number. There are many missing words, and other typographical and editorial errors, as well.

I picked up a copy of 'A House in Fez' prior to traveling to Fez myself. Suffice it to say, Clarke is a brave soul for undertaking the task of refurbishing a traditional Moroccan rehab, but you can read more about that yourselves. Clarke approaches expatriate life in Morocco with care, sensitive to the many issues involved when a foreigner from a wealthier country inserts themselves into the heart of a rich culture that is in many ways under attack. At many points throughout this read, I felt as if I were at the Riad myself, experiencing the chaos alongside the author. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in traditional Morocco and/or traveling to Fez itself.

My husband and I love to travel internationally, and have traveled on our own to some pretty exotic places. We have toyed with the idea of buying a house somewhere outside the United States. This book presents pros and cons for doing so, regardless of where one is thinking of having a home abroad.I appreciate the way Suzanna Clarke describes her experiences without becoming overly self-absorbed. Au contraire, her self-deprecation is quite endearing and amusing. I particularly liked reading about the relationships she formed with all kinds of people; from expats, to her neighbors, bureaucrats and workers. She certainly got it right from the beginning – you can't buy and restore a home in a place like like Fez without an inshallah attitude, which she and her husband seemed to completely embrace.Our next trip is to Morocco, and I'm very glad I read this book. It is well written and fast paced. The enjoyment of the reading experience is enhanced by the rich and interesting context one receives into Fez and Morocco through her commentary about culture, architecture, history, and religion. And I enjoyed following up reading the book with the visuals on Suzanna's blog.Although I loved reading about Suzanna's experience, I could not in my wildest dreams ever imagine buying a house in Fez and living the drama she described. But kudos to her and her husband for their perseverance. I hope that their cultural immersion continues to be the amazingly rich and zany life experience they had hoped for, and then some!

An Australian couple visit Fez, Morocco, fall in love with the city, culture, history and architecture and decide to buy a restore an old Riad in the heart of the ancient Medina of Fez. That's where this account of a clash of cultures begins. Fez Morocco is not only geographically foreign, it is of another past time. The very essence of life is at least from the 19th century, if not earlier. Materials and skilled workers are in short supply. Bureaucracy is stifling. Graft and bribery rampant. And the prevailing attitude of workers, officials, and residents of this ancient city is best summed up by the ubiquitous phrase - "Insha'Allah", "God willing". Clarke is a good writer but she starts to repeat experiences and results again and again towards the end of her saga. I started this non-fiction story before visiting Fez, then picked it up and finished it after my visit. It was like a return visit a second time, which was enjoyable.

Getting ready for a trip to Morocco and this gives good descriptions about buildings and people - a lot of information it will be handy to know that would be boring reading about without the "foreigner buys and renovates house" story line. The part about "we go away for months and come back to find work not done as we expected" is a little tedious and naive, but the book gives nice insight into Morocco. Of course, I have no basis for judging accuracy.
