This is a funny, witty and charming book about a teenager and her three pre-teen sisters, Diamond, Shelia, Crystal, and Felicity. This book is ideal for children ages 10-15 years because it provides some stories that they can relate to; from their relationships with their friends and families and the ups and downs of school life, to all of the problems that they have that no one else seems to understand or care about. This book was started initially by the girls’ mom because she wanted them to stop complaining and instead to channel their energies by journaling their thoughts. What is interesting about this book is that you will learn a lot about the minds of children, especially girls, during their pre-teen and teenage years.During our teenage and pre-teen years, we tend to believe that no one understands us. And the problems that we have only exist and happen to us. We operate in the “I can't do anything but my friends can” and the “Woe is me" continual cycle, but life continues to evolve, and later we discover that, actually, it wasn't so bad after all. These are some of the many things that I loved about this book, along with the occasional illustrations which highlight the subjects that the girls discuss, which make the story hilarious. This book is not only entertaining but educational because of the ‘Did You Know?’ resource at the end of each chapter, discussion questions and vocabulary words which create a great asset for the reader. She received a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources and Family Studies from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. The four adolescent authors are, Donna Smith age 16, Shannon Smith age 15, Charity Smith age 13, and Faith Smith age 12. They are all very active, school-aged girls with a variety of interests which include reading, drawing, singing, art and more. The inspiration for the first book came from their real-life mom’s summer writing assignment. This book is inspired by their real life, but it is a work of fiction. Their journey? just living life and surviving. As a mother, I understand the struggle, as it's referred to. I definitely read "The Struggle: Mom and the Summertime Blues" and looked forward to reading this one. First, it's multi-authored, with each one having her own writing style and story to tell. It's wonderfully put together, and the writing for all, is great. They each write well, and you can tell the different styles and who is telling what story, but it works for this. I enjoyed reading this from beginning to end, and a book that makes you nod your head, and laugh out loud because of its humor or relatability, is one you need to read. Mom writes "My goal was to get a better idea about the girls and their feelings." and I think, she got more than she realized she would. And so did we all. A great read.

This is not the normal kind of book I review. For one thing, it's not a novel. Well, not really. The first book in the "series", Mom and the Summertime Blues, was a summer holiday project Patrice Smith assigned her four daughters so they wouldn't get bored (click here to read my review). This is the follow-on, written over the course of a school year. While the names have been changed, I have no doubt all these events actually occurred. This makes The Struggle more memoir than fiction.Four sisters, two parents, and one bathroom. I can see The Struggle! But that's not all the book talks about. Each of the four sisters contributes three chapters, one from the beginning of the school year, one from the middle, and one from their summer trip. Mom starts with an apology, and wraps up loose ends to finish.I loved The Struggle. I know it's meant for middle grade and younger young adult reader, but I'd also recommend it toe homeschooling parents looking for ideas for school (or holiday) projects. I suspect there is a large market of grandparents who would love a real printed book by their grandchildren. Amazon CreateSpace and other Print on Demand printers means such an undertaking doesn't have to cost a lot of money.I'd also recommend The Struggle to those writing for a middle grade or young adult audience because of the insight it offers into the way modern pre-teen and girls think. Part of me wants to know if the whole project is Patrice Smith's sneaky plan to get to know her daughters better ... or maybe not:"I must say, my mom has done really well with the manipulating of her kids to eat the way she wants them to. She should write a book. Wait, what did I just say?"Parts made me laugh out loud:"My teacher makes coffee at the same time every morning. Nothing happens until she has some coffee in her hands. If you are smart, you stay out of her way until she has had at least one cup."I couldn't possibly comment. Other parts reminded me how fast trends move on:"My mom says by the time this book is published, I won't want a fidget spinner anymore and people willl no longer be excited by them, but I doubt it."I suspect Mom was right. Big surprise.The book also includes discussion questions (with thorny questions such as "Why do parents say No?"), and a word list, including the words that some younger readers might not know or understand (like vegan and chia).Thanks to Patrice Smith for providing a free ebook for review. I'll look forward to reading the next family project!

This book was delightful and entertaining as well. Especially if you like listening to kids tell about their lives. I like it because it’s not just a story, but life itself. Speaking their minds about anything random that pops in it as well as telling about their actual experiences at the same time.I think it’s a good book for 8-16 year olds as they can relate to the issues and probably feel the same way, but never say it or express themselves in a journal or book and definitely don’t put it out there for the world to see.You may be cramped in that bathroom, but you’re learning wonderful lessons and becoming brave in your endeavors. Struggles always make us stronger.

I was amused and glued. It was a little challenging to put this book down! It is a terrific book for female siblings to read and connect. As a mother who raised only one child, I was intrigued with this project by one of the authors, Patrice, the mother who also who coordinated,compiled and published this book. I think it was a clever way to give her girls an outlet to voice their opinions, concerns, and stories as well as document something for posterity. In the back of the book, there is a guide for group leaders to use for discussions about a variety of related topics as well as a list of vocabulary words introduced. Thank you for the inspiration, Patrice!

Ever been the parent of daughters? If so, this book will strike a familiar note. Having two daughters (now grown), I can empathize. Luckily, I proved incompetent so much of the chaos was handled by their mother, which was good.Four girls and a mother whom I suspect is a bit different but still a member of the mom clan. What can you expect? This is a light and breezy romp through the lives of four young sisters. It is a humorous portrayal written by the girls themselves and with a conclusion by Mom. Spend a little time with the girls and it will tickle your witty rib. Reviewed by the author of The Children's Story, About Good and Evil.

I highly recommend this book for anyone with a child between the ages of 8-14. Written by Patrice Smith's four incredible daughters - aged 9-14 - this book is a stellar example of what ambitious, honest, and intelligent young ladies can achieve... especially those of African-American descent. These girls are hilarious and I made sure to have my 10 year old niece read this over her Thanksgiving break. It was so refreshing to see four highly precocious and articulate young princesses express their views on such things we take for granted like: school, peer pressure, sibling rivalry, and even the hassles of missing your flight while trying to vacation. Buy this book - you will NOT regret your purchase.

The Struggle: 4 Girls & 1 Bathroom is one of those books that make you laugh the entire way through because at least one part of each story, as told by a different sister (and mom), somehow manages to humorously remind you of your own life and the life of your kids. (Phew! Glad it's not just me.) I let my 15-year old daughter read it and she enjoyed it as well. An easy-to-read well written story that every girl will love.There are more books in this series that I will definitely read!

Good description and examples of how the Northwest styles evolved. It's a little dated now, but serves as a good reference for me with respect to maintaining our condo buildings' style intent.

Great book arrived fast good inspiration

Readers of shelter magazines will be familiar with the format of these 30 stories about modest, custom homes in the Pacific Northwest and the laid-back lifestyle they afford their owners. The book begins with a poetic description of coastal life recognizable to residents from Northern California to Southern Alaska, but the author's obvious focus is on Portland, Oregon. Almost two-thirds of the houses in the book are in or near Portland. Her description of the development of a regional architectural style in the mid-20th Century is illustrated with "early modern classics by five masters," all of them from Portland, as are all seven of the named second generation architects. Seattle's Thiry, Kirk, and Terry "helped to adapt the International style to the Northwest," but none of their projects are presented. The collaboration of contemporaries in the Bay Area and Vancouver, BC, in creating the famed modernist style of the Northwest is unmentioned. So the focus here is narrow, despite the broad, region-embracing title.Similarly curious is that only half of the homes presented could be construed as even tangentially expressive of the modernism usually associated with the term `Northwest Regionalism' and suggested by the cover photo and first chapter. Noteworthy among these are houses by George Suyama, James Cutler, and Patkau Architects (the only Canadian entry), and these are spectacular. Instead the emphasis is on eclecticism with Arts & Crafts, Cape Cod, Japanese, Art Moderne, Post Modern, and even lodge styles all present. The common threads are purportedly the use of natural materials and proximity to nature, but even these themes are frequently undercut, especially in the chapter on urban loft living. A `Northwest style' not centered on modernism fails to cohere.

I liked the book and it was excellent in the areas covered, but it missed the largest part of the US PNW geographic area - the high deserts and dry land conifer forests East of the Cascades in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. As one born and raised in the Northwest, I would really like someone to write a book that acknowledged and showed the styles of architecture and interior design found in places like Pendleton and White Swan.Most of the PNW is not wet and cloudy, but drier with a harsh and stark beauty that can clearly be seen on the old highway between Ellensburg and Yakima, or cruising between Bend and Madras. Or in the forested places near La Grande and in Northern Idaho. There is the Horse Heaven and Pend Orielle country as well, which have their own forms of architecture that pay tribute to a beautiful and fascinating, and not always kind country.I wish for a book on PNW style that covers more than the narrow coastal strips and Willamette Valley.

Who knew the Pacific Northwest had such an eclectic range of home styles, from Japanese influenced designs to rustic log cabins, to stunning urban lofts. This book is written in an accessible (versus snobby) style, warmed by humor and with an irreverent eye to the iconoclastic bent of the nation's current power center. Beautiful photographs and "real" homeowners--not royalty or billionaires.

It's rare to laugh out loud more than a few times with any book -- this one had me in stitches many many times.Parents and pet owners especially will like this book.Reading it, you get to experience your own Self ... And to laugh at that Self... Also have the opportunity to be deeply touched by love and relationship. Such a fun time!!

After listening to Mr. McLean's stories on CBC radio, I was interested in how well his stories convert over to print and found them to be just as good as his radio show. They might be too tame for some, but they are humorous looks at real life that I often find myself thinking I might do something similar to some of the characters.

I think of Stuart McLean as the Canadian Garrison Keillor, and his show "The Vinyl Cafe," as their answer to "A Prairie Home Companion." This series is excellent for anyone with a mental age over six years.

Stuart is going to be SO missed.

If you are a Stuart and Vinyl Cafe fan, you'll love this, although it is somewhat jarring to "hear" Stuart in prose if you're an addict if his phenomenal oral storytelling skills. One if the stories had much more details than the oral version I'd heard, but this just made his tight oral skills even more impressive. I think people unfamiliar with the radio show would still enjoy it.

Stuart McLean is a good, funny light read. He makes it all seem so believable with a timing sense, that even though you can see the joke coming it builds so well that when he delivers his joke it is hilarious. I read it to my 11 year old granddaughter.

Laugh out loud funny and very entertaining

Lot's of personal notes and interview comments fill this book that are interwoven with the description and data on each machine. I wasn't looking for the career stories of the movers and shakers of the Pinball industry, just facts and figures on each machine, to see if I wanted to consider adding one to my collection. Still, a good book and worth picking up.

Page paper is top quality so therefore the well photographed pictures are equally excellent. Author's comments are bolstered with interviews with those who created the machines. Some machines I was interested in were not mentioned in as much detail as others that were favorites of Shalhoub. Certainly a quality book with the money.

Great for a collector/pinball nut!

If you are into pinballs this book is a gem.

this book proved invaluable giving some useful info by putting all tables in a book series, makes finding a new machine that much easier. i just wish they had went into details on some of the rules in the game for the tables

The pinball compendium trilogy is great. History is 5 stars (maybe too long). I would've prefer more and better pictures. We, who buy this books, are fans of pinball machines, so we want to see gooooood pictures. Lack of graphic design. Poor design overall.

Love it!

So far I like this book. I wish half of the book was not of faces and feet. The first half is the silhouette, which I love. They are lightly drawn so I can create my own fashion designs and there are two to a page. The second half of the book is just a waist. I also like the quality of the book. It looks expensive holds up well and has a bookmark built in to save my place. I would give this a five if it were silhouettes only.

People who say the croquis are too light aren’t aware that these don’t show up in scanners or photocopies. That’s super useful to turn in to your boss, you don’t want them to see the outlines, just your own work. It’s small enough to put in my purse. Just sketched at the DMV bc inspiration struck me from someone in line! I’m definitly buying this again once I use it all up.Oh, some cons, it does not take markers well without bleeding through the back of the page (but they’re not meant for markers). Also, I would agree there aren’t that many poses. But there are enough. Overall, I love it!

I got 3 of the these for me and my nieces to do together. They are always showing me what they made and really enjoy that they have plenty of pages. This is just a fun thing for us, but my nieces enjoy how the book looks clean and professional and not like a little girls pricy and cartoon-ish fashion book, and they feel more grown up with it. Great price and great product. I would definitely purchase again if their books are filled. I really enjoyed that the inside pages included how the company makes theirs products afforable. I thought that was a nice touch and makes more interested in what this company has to offer.

I really like how it arrived on time for my daughter's 11th birthday. She loves it! It looks very sophisticated and not all like a small child's fashion books. I recommend for every fashionista in your family!

This sketchbook is high quality. I like that when I tear out a page or two it does a crisp cut. Theres a small introduction on what type of attire there is and the name of the clothing. I like how the paper doesn't bleed when I use watercolor. Highly recommend. (Will post pictures later)

I bought this on a whim for my daughter's 9 birthday. She loves to draw. I wasn't going to give it to her at first because it seemed a bit advanced or mature?? The forms are faceless and naked (no features - just an outline) and super skinny. Against my motherly sensibility, I gave it to her anyway. That was in May. Since then, she draws in just about every day and has made some very cool and creative fashion sketches. She has a long bus ride each day, so this often goes with her. She sketches in it every night before bed, too. Sometimes we sketch together. It's so fun designing crazy outfits, hairdos, etc. You get many different figure poses, feet to design shoes, and heads for makeup or hair. It's a perfect portable size (about the size of diary I would say) and is hardbound for durability with a ribbon to hold your place. It has a glossary of terms with illustrations, too. She's almost filled this up and asked for it again! And for under $10, how can you go wrong?

I design and sew custom belly dance costumes, in addition to my own clothing. I have been looking for a basic figure sketch book for a while, and finally settled on this one. (I have other Peter Pauper Press products, and have been pleased with their quality, so that was also a factor in my decision.) I love the fact that this includes heads/faces and feet as well as bodies. Part of belly dance costuming includes headdresses - particularly with American Tribal Style (TM) - so I am really looking forward to using that portion of the book. The binding is neat, the elastic is well secured, and the pages are perforated for easy removal but still stable enough to not come out on their own. I could wish the models were a little larger/realistic, but with the size of the book, it makes sense. I would love it if PPP would produce an 8.5x11 version of this book as well! Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and look forward to filling it with designs.

My daughter loves this book! She's been drawing in it non-stop since it came. It has easy to read defintions & pictures, of different styles of clothing & accessories. The model figures make it easy for her to draw fashions on, as they have shape & she doesn't have to freehand that anymore. She's been drawing for several yrs & wants to grow up to be a fashion designer. This has certainly helped her, & has boosted her self esteem about her creations. She's age 12. The book is a great size for her to take along on trips, & has the nice elastic band to keep everything in place. Highly recommend. Made a great gift!

This is a very special book written specifically for those called to the Secular Institutes. This is a, somewhat, "new" vocation of Consecrated lay people within the Church. St. John Paul II identified those called to this vocation as "Spiritual Mountaineers!"This book brings instruction and encouragement to people seeking to live a more holy life in the world around them. It is a collections of his words, but put together in small sections to allow you to read and ponder what he has said.Wonderful book--but targeted for a very specific audience.

I, too, am disappointed in this book and will be returning it. I bought it as a gift thinking it was a collection of the Pope's prayers to God. Instead, I have a found a collection of speeches/papers/instructions to Secular Institutes asking them to "Love the Church" and "Challenge the Young." In the last chapter of the book, there were three actual prayers. Perhaps I allowed the book's title to misguide my expectations. The writing is lovely if you are looking for secular instruction, but don't expect to find the Pope's private prayers.

Originally posted on [...] blogThis is a book that I picked up because it was free on Audible (I think it was given away to commemorate his death.) Obviously I did not get right to it. I stumble across it when looking back through my audio archives.It is very short, just over 2 hours of audio (did not realize until now that it is an abridged audiobook). The full book is actually a collection of 150 letters (fairly short blog/newsletter length) that were written to the Secular Institutes. My understanding from the introduction is that these are people that live and work in the secular world, but take on vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. Mostly they are lay people (not ordained) and unlike monks or nuns (which are also often not ordained) live alone outside of a community. I had never heard of this status before, but according to Wikipedia, there are about 60,000 people that live as `consecrated persons'.These letters are a mix of basic instruction on how to live in and evangelize the world and encouragement for living a full, deep Christian life. There is actually a lot of good advice and biblical teaching. Part of it won't make sense for mostBest quote was "If you have met Christ, proclaim it in the first person." Other letters focus on devoting ourselves to proper teaching and using our intelligence to learn more about the faith so that we can better communicate to the world. One letter focused on Christians `being a herald of the newness of life in Christ'. Pope John Paul II then tells a short illustration about a faded sign having no purpose (clearly referencing Jesus parable of salt). I would not recommend running out and buying it. But if you see it in a used book store or find it free somewhere, I think it would be an interesting devotional.
