Far too tangential. No need to create such elaborate descriptions of human suffering. Just go to any poor area and you'll find plenty of tragedy and trauma. Painful to read as the author presents it. And I tried, I really did. I felt strongly this was a book written to try to impress. I'm not impressed.

The author writes in a lucid manner. You won't feel like you're slogging through it.

What a great book! Dias deftly weaves philosophy, history, biology, cutting edge research, personal insight to explore human behavior. Why do some people do good things, why do some do heinous things. I got this book because my hobby is human behavior/ethology. I'd been putting off reading it because, well, it's a big book and the thought of diving into 848 pages non-fiction during a busy time of my life seemed daunting.I could not put it down. Seriously, the way he's structured the book, the way he weaves the various threads together -- this is actually a page turner. This would be a great gift for anyone interested in the human mind/human behavior, why we do the good and bad things we do.

I cannot say enough how excellent this book is. I ordered two more copies to give away. It's a must read.

Devastating, yet uplifting. It's funny how fate conspires. Being the eccentric individual I am, I don't tend to pick up short/shallow books for flying and it was a little funny to see my colleagues faces when I came back from the airport shop with this tome under my arm. I too however was surprised by the emotional and intense impact of Ten Types.Just before any jumps to conclusions it may be useful to point out that this piece is not have ten "types" of people in the sense of personality styles or whatever, the examination is of ten ASPECTS to human nature. Aspects which Dias explores through a combination of biographical tales, science and history. The prompt for the tome was a sad tale - a case Dias had been involved in where a boy in juvenile detention died during a three person restraint (that's 3 people restraining him btw). It wasn't just the death, it was the vast number of factors that lead to it, including the question of how does human nature allow of this sort of thing. (Perhaps ironically in the my only real criticism of the book, Dias only touches briefly on how the 10 types relate to the case I guess the piece is more about what Dias learned after the case rather than purely about it).Following the same theme the book is incredibly harrowing. Dias covers topics of child slavery, locked in syndrome and euthanasia, acid attacks, sex slavery, female genital mutation, child soldiers, and all the generally terrible conditions that surround and lead to such things.I wouldn't be exaggerating to say that the book gave me a couple of nightmares. Also it must be said its disturbing how much of the horrors of human behaviour is dealt to girls and women. Obviously there is no mandatory limit on suffering for either gender and the plight of male child slaves and soldiers is hardly ignorable, yet so much of the violence and suffering covered in this book was and continues to be inflicted about human females. We have a long way to go.Despite the horrors Dias does produce a hopeful book. The purpose of the tome is not to dishearten, even though it is intended to illustrate many traumas, the path is one of learning and understanding gained to change these things. So even though the book often raised goose-flesh or invaded my dreams I still am glad I read it.

One of the problems of our digital revolution has been identified as the echo-chamber of social media that narrows and confines our perspective, without us even knowing it. This book is the antidote to that echo chamber - it has expanded my perspective by opening my eyes to numerous perilous human journeys 'in the underground history of our times'. Dexter Dias offers us a window on our world that has been either untold or forgotten. Combining the craft of a bestselling novelist, the sharp edge of a university academic and the richest historical and cultural hinterland of a public intellectual, Dexter Dias offers an explosive insight into the profoundest truths about human nature. This master of narrative uses the latest research in neuroscience and psychology to forge new connections and a novel understanding of human behaviour across the globe, from the plight of Antony and Michael, the child slaves in Ghana, to Saira and Omer, the child soldiers in the Central African Republic. This utterly compelling narrative written in fluid conversational style offers a whole new perspective on some age old problems of human identity and the underlying reasons for our common behaviour patterns. In this book Dexter Dias has given a voice to those without a voice and the implications are far reaching - this is required reading for anyone with an interest in human nature, human rights, human identity, individuality and freedom. It's not often that I can't out a book down so this one comes with a warning - only pick it up if you can risk not putting it down. I cried whilst reading the section on the Central African Republic - the harrowing stories of the child soldiers attempting to survive their violent world, the world's largest 'forgotten humanitarian crisis' according to the UN.But despite the somewhat intimidating length of the book, every minute I've spent reading has been richly rewarded. My horizons have widened. In Saira's narrative her father tells her that 'books are more precious than diamonds'. I guess that can depends on the book - but this book which strikes such a deep resonance with the human heart and mind, deserves the comparison and is just as precious. In some sense it's prophetic. It's an invitation to view ourselves and our fellow human beings with entirely new eyes. After reading this you cannot be numb, you cannot switch off from the needs of others and the human compulsion we all share to do something, anything, however small, to create a more just world. It invites us to act, to support the work of INQUEST, ActionAid and UNICEF. It has inspired me to do something different and better - to ignore the echo chamber and to try and help others. I want everyone to read this book.Â

This is a unique and astounding book that describes a set of 10 emotional and psychological 'mechanisms' - types of human behavior. It does this by both telling remarkable, engaging human stories of real people, but also matching these with corresponding studies and research into those mechanisms. All this is done in a seamless and engaging way that shows both the best and worst of humanity. Drawing these together the book then suggests how these dueling impulses can tilted towards the good, the best of human behavior. I am unable to recommend this highly enough.

"Bioshock: Rapture" is a 2011 novel by John Shirley, and is the prequel to the videogames Bioshock (2007) and Bioshock 2 (2010). While the novel can stand alone on its own, it is recommended that the reader play through Bioshock 1 and 2 before reading the novel, as it is more effective as a whole if read after having played the games."Bioshock: Rapture" is set in 1945 and continues through the 50's. In it, we find a world changed by the recently fought Second World War and FDR's New Deal. Red communism is on the rise and the world is paranoid about possible nuclear war. Having escaped Communist Russia and come to America, only to find the U.S. aggressively adopting progressive policy, rich business tycoon Andrew Ryan is determined to find a place where business, science and art can flourish in an unchecked environment. Ryan is frustrated that the fruit of man's labor is taken from him by the state or by religion, and believes he can create an insular society free from the influence of the rest of the world, where freedom is the name of the game. What follows is a three-part tale that chronicles the creation of Ryan's utopia, and its eventual descent into madness. By the end of the story, the scene is set for the beginning of the Bioshock 1 videogame. The plot of "Rapture" is incredibly interesting. It is a genius blend of both Ayn Rand and George Orwell; readers of those authors will immediately see similarities in "Rapture." However, while obviously inspired by these two visionary writers, "Rapture" does not feel ripped off, but rather comes across as an inspired reimagining of the ideas from Rand and Orwell. The plot moves through the years pretty quickly, and is always engaging. The reader should not expect a lot of violence or action in the first 2/3 of the book, but should expect an interesting blend of philosophy, intrigue, science and drama. In the last third of the book, chaos descends.Mr. Shirley, the author, does an excellent job with the novel. The writing is top-notch, with references and dialogue that feel genuine to the 40's/50's setting. Vocabulary and colloquialisms are masterfully used, and really help catapult the novel to something transcending mere video game novelization. The characters are also brilliantly rendered, particularly Ryan, Lamb, Fontaine, Bill, Cohen, and others. So many of the characters Ryan brings on his grand experiment are eccentric, and Shirley does a bang-up job of highlighting those quirks, and spends enough time with each character that the reader really gets to know them. The reader will form a real emotional attachment with the more likable characters. The ending is handled masterfully, with both a sense of conclusion and a sense of mystery. Those who have played the Bioshock games will notice how well the novel answers questions raised in the plot of the games. I was thoroughly confused by the plot of the first Bioshock game, but the novel really helped clear up the misunderstanding. The only plot element that was still hazy to me after reading the novel is what exactly ADAM and EVE are. We know what these two elements allow the user to do, but the science of the matter was glossed over. This small complaint was one of the only I had with the novel."Bioshock: Rapture" comes highly recommended, and is one of the best pieces of tie-in fiction I have read. Do yourself a favor and check it out, particularly if you are a fan of the games. Your experience will not be complete until you've read the timeless and tragic story behind the rise and fall of Andrew Ryan's shining city under the sea, Rapture. In Summation:The Good:-clarifies the plot of the games and ties in masterfully with them-great characterization-outstanding writing style and use of dialogue-effective ending for a prequel-an example of what media tie-ins should beThe Bad:-still fuzzy on exactly what ADAM and EVE are

I am an enormous fan of the Bioshock game series. The original is in my top 3 games all time, and has maybe the best storyline of any game I've ever played. So, to say I wanted this book to be awesome is an understatement. Unfortunately I just thought it was okay, and if you aren't a Bioshock fan probably not worth the purchase. My main problem with the book is that they spent too much time on what happened before people started going to rapture. Shorten that and spend more time developing characters such as Sophia Lamb and more time of the narrative of the downfall of Rapture. Even with that, I would still give the book 4 stars if it wasn't... for... the author's... overuse of... ellipses. It got to the point where it was a distraction and detracted from the book.

This is a FANTASTIC book. Its a prequel but do NOT read it until you play both the first and second game (Infinite had not yet been made and isn't included, and really not necessary.)It adds so much depth to the game. It takes obscure characters and sort of mentioned storylines from the game and develops them. It mostly follows one man's journey from meeting Andrew Ryan through building Rapture, right up to the beginning of the first game. You read the audiodiaries being recorded and it gives so much depth to the story.Replaying the game afterwards made me pause a lot more to appreciate the subtler storylines.DEFINITELY NOT FOR YOUNG READERS.Picture from my instagram

This book sparked my interest in all things Bioshock. I feel like I have to give full disclosure though (at risk of losing geek cred I'm afraid), I never played Bioshock 1 or 2. I did play Bioshock Infinite. I don't know if the author nailed the characterizations or tone. All that said, the characters are vivid and well written. The tone is one of dread. You know the whole thing is going to go to hell, but seeing how it all happened is fascinating. The book starts off a bit slow. That's okay though because the author does a good job of world building, introducing characters and their motivations. I'd recommend this book to anyone who played the games or has a passing interest in them.I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the themes within this book. Like the games the book is based on, this book hits on several political ideologies. Among them are: capitalism, communism, democracy, socialism, and randian objectivism. "Andrew Ryan" is an anagram of Ayn Rand. The whole story is basically a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked capitalism. There is also the matter of the big daddies and the little sisters. The notion of unregulated science is terrifying and riveting. This is one of the best licensed books I've ever read. The tone and political themes are what I loved about this book. It's given me a lot to think about and has stuck with me a few months after reading it.

I don't ever get companion novels for video games or similar, but the overwhelmingly positive reviews for this one changed my mind. I picked this up and was surprised at the very high quality of the writing and snappy cover to cover pacing. For those of you expecting a whole new insight into Rapture - you're not really going to get that here. The most "new" information comes in the first quarter or so of the book as they discuss getting Rapture up off its feet, but once it's up and running there isn't really anything super surprising or revelatory about what goes on. Definitely worth a read for Bioshock fans, and might actually be most interesting to those that haven't played Bioshock before.

From the Back Cover

Security Analysis on Wall Street The principles of investing have always been simple: buy low, sell high. The information needed to make these potentially lucrative decisions, however, is often hard to find, difficult to decipher, and not always reliable. This authoritative new book is the essential reference for students who want to learn the rational, rigorous analysis that is still the most successful way to evaluate securities. Security Analysis on Wall Street explains how the values of common stocks are really determined in today's marketplace and takes a comprehensive look at the entire security evaluation process, as well as the major valuation techniques currently being used by Wall Street professionals. Beginning with an overview of the environment in which stocks are issued, researched, bought, and sold, Hooke examines the roles of the various players, the rules of the markets, and the activities surrounding initial public offerings. He then probes the intricacies of analyzing and reporting on securities with proven methods for evaluating the merits of a stock. This sophisticated yet straightforward system teaches students how to assess profitable firms; understand marginal performers, leveraged buyouts, and corporate takeovers; and-most importantly-to break down different analyses and get the big answers: Is the security fairly valued, and why or why not? "A welcome successor to Graham and Dodd's Security Analysis." -Barron's

After working as a writer in the investment field for more than 10 years, I found myself using terms such as "discounted cash flow" without thorough understanding of what they really mean or how business valuation is done. Now, after reading Security Analysis and Business Evaluation on Wall Street, I feel very well equipped to delve into the value of an investment and to better understand the analysis done by others. The author clearly has thorough knowledge of a professional with many years of experience in investment banking, but he explains the concepts clearly so that any investor or business student can understand and use them.Plenty of case histories explore specific companies and industries. It also includes a timely and cogent analysis of the 2008 crash--a fiasco largely caused by phony analysis of risk and value. The book also includes access to a website with excellent working spreadsheets for Discounted Cash Flow and other valuation models. They alone are more than worth the price of the book. They could save an analyst or investor countless hours--plus they provide a great hands-on feel for the concepts so aptly illustrated in the book.

University of Chicago MBAs looking to work on the Street live and die by this book. It happens to be one of my favorites...Other valuation books I like1. DAMADORAN'S book -- buy it; it walks you through the WACC, etc.......2. the McKinsey and Co book is a Bible -- another MBA first year staple.....3. the "Streetsmart Guide to..." isn't bad either, since it's DCF focused...Picking stocks isn't just valaution, so make sure you read PORTER for an overview on industry dynamics.....

This may be the best book currently available on investing because it is so relevant to today's security analysis, not just some ancient tome like Graham and Dodd's. this book is worlds better and much more practical. It emphasizes exactly what the "powers that be" on Wall Street look for and that is simply GOLD!

Hooke's treatment of security valuation is more popular than academic, and parts 1 and 2 can be skipped by anyone who has read authors such as Damodaran and Porter. Where Hooke is really valuable is in providing practical advice on how to value special cases: as a primer on distressed, natural resource, financial industry, and insurance stocks, this is really a good place to begin.

My opinion, this book is good in a broad sense, but certainly not thatin depth. Comparing it to Graham and Doddville is streching. Sorry, I disagree. Of course, this is my opinion and other might have different opinion.
