The book seems to be written for the college or graduate level but also for the general public that is interested in geographic history of US would find it very informative and interesting to read. The author writes on the development of maps and geographic knowledge of the American people as the nation was settled and then expanded. The use of maps and geography was one of the main methods used to broaden early American national Identity. Some pictures of maps are included in the book. The author writes about various individuals that contributed to the growth of early American geographic knowledge. The Author discussed various literary materialsand books written to increase geographic and map knowledge of the American people. I have a general interest in maps and geogrpahy and the book increased by knowledge of early America maps, geographic knowledge and national identity. Charles

While the content is no doubt good, as one with an above average vocabulary and a graduate degree in engineering, I gave up after several pages and started simply flipping through the text. The terminology and vocabulary used in this book is indicative of someone attempting to impress the reader and I found it offensive and totally unnecessary.
