This is a good quality text with a case study that goes throughout the book to explain techniques and concepts. Sturdy construction. Easy to read with plenty of examples and study questions. Summary at end of each chapter is useful, as are tables of statements with syntax and examples.
The book is clear and concise and the author explains well each one of the topics although at times I feel there should be at least two examples of something that is explained in a given chapter. Other than this I feel the book is easy to read for anyone whether you are a beginner, like myself, or an intermediate user both can benefit from reading this book. One think though I could never install the software in the companion CD for during the installation I ran into an error and then when trying to use SQL*PLUS I could not log in even though the user name and password were correct.
No bad. It is better is you have previous knowledge of SQL to understand better the exercises from this book.
Bought for a class I was taking. I still use it as reference material. Excellent guide.
I am a computer science student and this was a book for my course. I really enjoyed this book, the subject matter was presented in a conceptual manner with good examples. I have seen other books on the subject of SQL that just give you a bunch of facts and move on to the next subject. This book is not like that it flows though the subject matter and touches every fact completely before transiting to another subject. If you want to learn SQL i believe this book does an excellent job of it.
I was dubious about another thick, high cost textbook. I have enough incomprehensible database and SQL books - this text is different - it's so well written, it's understandable, the examples are useful, and the author points out all the little idiosyncrasies that trip up newbies. Highly recommend this book for anyone starting to learn SQL or who had trouble with SQL with another text. The datafiles on the companion website are easy to work with and it's a very practical, hands on text. Well worth the high cost.
I bought this as a textbook for a Database Programming course. All database concepts are explained concisely and effectively, and there are adequate challenges in the back of the chapters to test your knowledge. No complaints.
I bought this book for a college course I took last semester. I was brand new to SQL and programming in general, and this book made all the concepts very easy to understand for a beginner. I'd highly recommend this book if you want to learn SQL!
