Lists a lot of sites and gives some good history, but doesn't provide lots of details for planning a trip. No web addresses or maps, no tour recommendations with detail. Lots of country music reminiscence.

This book was a HUGE disappointment. There was a problem at the printing press and we have a book that skips pages 22-49. We have 49-60 twice though. What we could read didn't really give us any info on our trip. $$ straight to the recycle bin :(

As someone who was born and raised in Nashville, I've got to say this is the most thorough and entertaining book on Nashville that you'll ever read! And it's got something for everyone... Nashville's history, historical landmarks, restaurant recommendations, recording studios, pop culture sights and stories, music industry stories, and my personal favorite, the stories of how Country music's biggest hits were written.Photos and addresses are provided for most of the entries in case you're ready to map out your own Nashville adventure.This book is perfect for those who are planning to visit Nashville, and it's also great for locals like me who didn't know half of the things in this book! I've only been to Nashville a few times, but only saw the mainstream tourist "things". This book was absolutely great at sharing the "behind the scenes" type of places, and the history of some of the coolest spots in town. I can't wait to go back to Nashville now, and go to a few of the places mentioned in the book and find the really cool spots! Great book- wish there were more like this for other cities too! (possible sequel?)

I like to research different cities in the US and loved all the information found in this book. Information ranges from the historical spots to famous homes, good eating, music studios and more. He can even get you to the Willie Nelson fortune teller for a buck! Can't beat that :-)

If you are visiting Nashville this book is a must have! Now You Know Nashville has a little of everything for just about all traveling styles. You have got to read it for yourself to understand! I have lived in Nashville for seven years and now I keep this book in my car so I always have ideas for exploring parts of Music City I didn't know before!

About the Author

Dustyn Roberts is a traditionally trained engineer with non-traditional ideas about how engineering can be taught.  She started her career at Honeybee Robotics as an engineer on the Sample Manipulation System project for NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, scheduled for launch in 2011. In 2006 she founded Dustyn Robots after consulting for two artists during their residency at Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in NYC. She continued consulting projects for students and artists while working full time at Honeybee, and eventually moved to consulting full time on projects ranging from gait analysis to designing guided parachute systems. In 2007, she developed a course for NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program called Mechanisms and Things That Move that led to the book you see here. She also participated in the pilot of Battle of the Geeks where her team designed and launched a rocket across a canyon in Africa, and has attracted media attention by Time Out New York, IEEE Spectrum, and local organizations.  Dustyn holds a BS in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University with minors in Robotics and Business, an MS in Biomechanics & Movement Science from the University of Delaware, and is currently working on a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. She currently lives in New York City with her partner, Lorena, and cat, Simba.

Lots of good details, still haven't read the whole thing yet. But gleened thru the book recently to find answers about different motor types.

This book is a very accessible introduction to mechanics, as you might use in Maker projects.I've just started building projects using Arduino hardware and software combined with a little bit of robotics. I know enough electronics, software, and woodworking for those projects, but had a real gap in mechanical design. This book filled that gap perfectly, providing all the theory I needed, the names of all the parts I wanted, plus loads of pointers to where to buy those parts.The book also provides just a few wonderful projects showing what you can build with your new-found knowledge.Note this is not a robotics book. Instead, it's about more conventional (and useful) machines involving parts such as motors, gears, belts, and linkages.

If you have a maker or aspiring maker in your life and they don't own this book, this should be your gift to them. You won't just be giving them a book, but a fundamental education in machines and fabrication techniques that they will be able to use for the rest of their life. No, that's not an exaggeration.In 'Making Things Move', Dustyn Roberts explains mechanical design principles and their applications in non-technical terms, using examples and a dozen topic-focused projects.The book is a wealth of information: * Introductions to mechanisms and machines * Finding and using materials such as metals, plastics, & wood * Basic physics * How to fasten and attach things in a bunch of different ways * Info on different types of motors and how to use them * Converting between rotary and linear motion * Using off-the-shelf components * A wide variety of fabrication techniques * How to have things made, if you can't do it yourself * A primer on Arduino micro-controllers * There is even a section on automata!This is an outstanding book with a ton of useful material presented in a very accessible way. I believe it to be a classic-in-its-own time for makers. I wish I had owned it years ago!

I bought this book when I saw it promoted on a DiY website (maybe MAKE?), and ever since it's never left my side. It's a practical resource to get anyone building their favorite project or self-conceived idea in no time. I didn't want get stuck in the formulas and rhetoric commonly flaunted in engineering. Let me "Build something now!" I thought. Start learning by doing! And, I read this book. It distills those theories and calculations into compact, accessible language that lays out what you need to know to get up and running. I've had a blast throughout this whole learning process. It's one of those books in which the author actually gets her audience (maybe because she has been a teacher). She incorporates modern practices, so you're not stuck in an ice age somewhere. She jumps write into content in the Introduction, and every chapter matters. If you want to build on the math and science, you could, because the author does introduce some of those concepts. If at any point you want to dig deeper into an area, such as, 3d modeling and manufacturing, you could (and it's to be expected if you want to better your design skills.) Don't be fooled. This is not a book for dummies kind of project. As someone who has studied engineering and design in college, I find that a book like this (which is a rarity to find) essential for developing the hands-on knowledge to getting things made and working, simply and quickly.This book, however, is not a programming or electrical design book. One reviewer criticized the book's lack of depth in those areas, to which I respond, "Didn't you read the title?!" So, if you think, this book or any book could sufficiently cover mechanical, electrical and program design, expect it to be an encyclopedia. For what this book is written for - mechanisms for the DiY crowd - Making Things Move beats expectation.

OK. Relatively basic introductory book on "mechatronics". If you have never laid hands on a stepper motor, gear motor, or some kind of microcontroller such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi then this might be a great book for you. But if you are advanced past that level I would not recommend it.

I haven't read this book yet. I've just flipped through the pages. That's all I needed to know that it is what I was looking for. It comes from a professional source, is well illustrated, and requires no engineering background to understand.I'm one of those people who are interested in doing many things but always had other things that took up my time. Business management, biology, and cancer detection paid the bills and was almost all I could handle.I'm retired now and too old to take on college level engineering courses, and I'm more interested in my photography hobby anyway.The reason I purchased this book is because all my life I've had a special invention circulating around in my brain. Problem was that each test unit I built broke as soon as I turned on the power. Still, maybe my brainstorm invention can actually be made. This book, Making Things Move, is more in line with what I can handle. Even if it doesn't help me make my brainstorm it's sure to provide fun activities.

I'm a borosilicate crystal glass artist with a Carlisle cc which is a really big torch. I'm really enjoying it. If you're a bead maker or soft glass person then this book is not for you but may be interesting if you are trying to figure out how to make glass art with a torch that is much larger than beads . Overall I love thebook. I've been working with boro full time for twenty years and I did find inspiration . The pictures are color and beautiful . I would consider it a "how to" book. Really neat and it is one of the few books that exist for us that work with boro or "hard" glass!

The author is really good at providing detailed step-by-step instructions with good pictures so you can see what she's talking about. She lists the tools you will need for each exercise. She builds up slowly, starting with simple exercises (such as leaves and morias), then combining those exercises together to form detailed projects (such as the flower candleholder).I'd like to see her go into annealing a little bit more. As it is, she doesn't really explain that aspect in much depth (she talks about using a kiln, and even about using the kiln as a place to hold hot glass pieces, but never specifies when pieces should be placed there). While annealing isn't AS important in boro, it is still important to at least flame-anneal the pieces. I suspect the author just flame anneals automatically and didn't think to include that information. However, no book is perfect, and there is annealing information available free online, so it is only a minor drawback in an otherwise fantastic book.As others have stated, this book is directed at borosilicate users. Soft glass users may find some useful tips here, but a lot of the methods discussed just aren't very relevant. There are plenty of soft glass books out there, however, and I was overjoyed to see a book directed at hard glass users.

Arrived quickly in great condition. This is an excellent book for beginners/intermediate. There are numerous projects at various levels. The photos of the various flameworking/glassblowing steps are very helpful. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in flameworking.

It's important to note (as several reviewers have) that this is a book on working borosilicate (hard glass) and will be of comparatively little interest in those who work soft glass. I fall into the latter category, but am always looking to expand my skills. I have a pretty somprehensive library of flameworking books, and have to say that this proved to be one of the less useful any way you look at it. It is not as comprehensive as many of the technical books, does not detail as many techniques as most of the soft glass books and guides and has neither the breadth or depth of some of the boro books out there )e.g., Contemporary Lampworking. A Practical Guide to Shaping Glass in the Flame, 2 vol. set.I'd recommend this for people who already have pretty good libraries, know the basics and are looking to add a few techniques; not for those who need to know annealing schedules & other technical information, or who are rank beginners. It might be a nice adjunct to a class. A few techniques/ projects are demonstrated. Look at this as a way to expand your skill set if you are a relative novice at offhand lampwork, but not a rank beginner.

This was the first book I ever found on flameworking.It is one of the few books I have come across specifically on Boro glass.The book was easily accessible, well laid out and easy to read. It is quite basic and this book did not answer all my questions, in fact it raised more questions that it answered, BUT the authors' passion for her art had a magical effect on me.This is THE book that ignited the passion I have for flamework. I left reading this book with a total desire to answer all the questions that it had raised, and that set me on my own path into flameworking.I am now a glass artist in my own right, and my work does not resemble anything in this book, but I am oh so grateful to Ms Mears for sharing her passion.

Very nice, bought for a day of the dead to celebrate my family who have gone before us.

Got me started flameworking. It has some good projects to practice with.

My parents just started getting into glass work and this book has tons of great ideas. Most are more advanced then I was going for, but each project seems to be explained with lots of pictures and there is a short introduction that is pretty helpful in the beginning. Overall, it was a worthwhile purchase.
