Eleven months ago I was diagnosed as having "multiple coronary ischemia" due to atherosclerosis. My cardiologist made an appointment for me go into the hospital for stents or possibly by-pass surgery. But I cancelled the appointment, opting to try alternative methods through study. Since then I've been doing diet, nutritional supplements, and daily exercise, with very considerable success at age 72. No drugs (except "armor thyroid" which I've been taking for years).Of the many books I've read since my diagnosis, Fonorow's has been one of the most helpful.The book is basically about vitamin C and Linus Pauling's approach to curing cardiovascular disease. Owen begins with a fairly comprehensive description of vitamin C – more than "just a vitamin." Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant, acts like a hormone to offset stress, is a detoxifier, is necessary for collagen production for connective tissues, acts as a safe statin to reduce high cholesterol levels, in high amounts is anti-viral, and more.We humans are among only a very few species of higher animals that do not produce vitamin C (ascorbate) within the body. This fact is significant and is emphasized. Owen explains how it is that the build-up of plaque in the arteries is fundamentally due to localized scurvy – vitamin C deficiency.For decades doctors have been blaming LDL ("bad cholesterol") for the coronary blockages of plaque. But that is not quite accurate. Cholesterol in general is a necessary material for the body. Even LDL performs a positive function. Owen wrote a very informative chapter titled "The Truth About Cholesterol." It turns out that plaque is primarily composed of a particular kind of lipid called lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a). Pauling learned that the presence of high Lp(a) in the blood is a major risk indicator for heart disease or heart attack – and a likely reason that Lp(a) reaches high levels in the blood would be that the body does not have enough vitamin C, which in turn leads to damage to the walls of coronary arteries, which in turn leads to the body attempting to plug leakage and strengthen the wall of the vessel with Lp(a) and calcium (because adequate ascorbate is not available for proper repair). Owen does a very good job of explaining the ifs, ands, and buts.It is critical to understand lipoprotein(a) and also how it should be tested. Some docs don't test it at all, and many labs do not test it adequately or do not use the method that provides the most valuable information. Owen explains all of this and even mentions some top labs for doing the testing. Indeed, for the lay person this book provides the best coverage of the whole subject of lipoprotein(a) that I have seen thus far anywhere. The Lp(a) information alone is worth more than the price of the book.I find only one fault with the book perhaps worth mentioning. From chapter one and onward, Owen mentions Pauling's "Unified Theory" without giving us a brief summary of what that actually is. Even when we get to chapter 5 which is titled "The Unified Theory," I was still scratching my head until three pages into that chapter when finally a single long sentence appeared which listed several points that looked sort of like, or probably, various factors involved in the Unified Theory. But the sentence had started as: "The neglected vitamin C theory is…" I did not get a satisfying understanding of exactly what The Unified Theory is until I went to Google and found an article by Linus Pauling himself (and his cohort, Matthias Rath M.D.) titled: "A Unified Theory of Human Cardiovascular Disease Leading the Way to the Abolition of This Disease as a Cause for Human Mortality."However, I could then see that Owen pretty well covers the various factors involved within "The Unified Theory" throughout the book. So even though lacking a clear summation of said theory, and considering the outstanding coverage of lipoprotein(a), the book still very much deserves 5 stars!!!Chapter 7 titled "The Pauling Therapy" goes into specific nutritional supplemental recommendations. Chapter 11 presents some of the dangers and faults of conventional treatments for cardiovascular disease. The book also includes several reports by real people and their experiences with Pauling Therapy, including even some failures! (Honesty!)This is an outstanding book.

I guess I should start with my great-grandfather, not a smoker, not obese, who died of a massive heart attack in the mid-70's before I was ever born. My grandfather, somewhat overweight, smoked frequently, wasn't very active and loved to eat, had bypass surgery in the 80's I believe and was dead before he was 70. It probably didn't help that he never quit smoking and didn't bother to try to lose weight or exercise. Now moving onto my father.My father had his first recorded heart attack in December of 1999. I remember coming home for Christmas to find my mother waiting near the door to inform me that my dad was in ICU. They installed a few stents in his body, put him on statins and sent him on his way. With or without the statins, he was suffering more clogged up arteries and needed more stents installed every few years. I will note that my father was a smoker, was not obese, but was also not very physically active.In July of 2015, he went to see his cardiologist who reported to him that he needed 6 bypasses / open heart surgery. My father wasn't keen on having this surgery done and it was at this point that I purchased this book "Practicing Medicine without a License". With some hope that it would help to reverse his heart problems or buy him a little more time on this earth. My father was committed to finding an alternative to surgery as it seemed that the approach taken by doctors was not working for him, his father or his grandfather...His hope was the Pauling therapy would work and this would be a way for him to not only stay alive but for me to avoid heart problems and my children to avoid heart problems.He had been suffering from what he was calling "horrible angina" on pretty much a daily basis and was taking Tower Brand "Heart Tech". He reported that when consuming vitamin C as prescribed in the book, that it seemed to ease up on his angina considerably. He still had "bad days" where the pain was absolutely dehibilitating. He went to a clinic and had them test his lipo (a) as a control before starting this protocol. In September of October of 2015, he had his cholesterol checked and it was down considerably, not from statin drugs but from what he believed was the megadoses of Vitamin C. His good cholesterol was up, bad cholesterol was down...and it was a huge jump to the point that his primary care doctor was shocked and had asked why he considered going on the statins. My father reported that he was not actually taking the statins. It did seem as though the vitamin C treatments were working. Yet, he continued to suffer chest pain and during phone calls I had with him, he stated that he believed the pain he was feeling was the vitamin c and lysine "cleaning out his system".Well, December 2nd, 2015 he suffered his final heart attack, sudden death.I share this story with everyone with a heavy heart. I do not share this as negative information about the book or Linus Pauling. From the results of my dads cholesterol tests, it was pretty apparent that the protocol does have an effect on cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, it's not something that worked for my dad. He was not willing to have the surgery done anyhow, so this experiment that he did with the last months of his life was not the result of being misguided by the information in the book.I would suspect that if you just had your first heart attack, it would not hurt you to follow this protocol, along with getting plenty of exercise, eating right, not smoking etc. In fact, vitamin C with lysine, proline etc. could be helpful to you overall. Yet, if you have serious heart problems and you're presented with open heart surgery as a means of staying alive...I would recommend having the procedure done instead of relying on vitamin c.I hope that this helps someone.

I bought this book because of a friend who was diagnosed with coronary artery disease. This book not only blew my mind, but by following the simple advice, we were successful in REVERSING the blockage in my friend's artery! Her consultant (who had almost been bullying my friend into using statins, etc.) didn't know what to say when the tests came back! He said that he'd never seen anything like it before.If you are at all interested in learning 'the rest of the story' when it comes to heart disease, this book is a Must Read!

This is an excellent book with many alternative medical treatments that you can do for yourself.it shows that we are being misled by big pharmaceutical companies being sold drugs we don't needfor conditions that we don't have. There is a lot of science to prove that megs diets of certain easilyattainable vitamins will make your heart healthy and even remove blockages. I bought the book to help my motherwho had been in and out of the hospital about 6 to 9 times a year. She had been in chronic chest pain for severalyears, since the day she had a medical stint put in her heart without her permission.now after starting the therapy in this book she has no chest pain for the first time in about 10 years.She went from an emergency room visit with her pain reported at an 8 (scale 1 to 10 ten being the worst pain imaginable)to one month later telling me that she had NO pain in her heart anymore. shes doing more things.....she is feeling happy for the first time in a LONG time. thanks you for this incredible book.Respectfully,Wild Acre Farms

We're in the process of planning an outbound sales call center. This book did a good job explaining the process from introductory elements, like space planning, to telco planning, to later stage descriptions and applications of advanced technologies like predictive dialing and CRM.Best practices and interesting little factoids are pointed out every step of the way, which were very helpful and interesting.If you're looking for a book to get your thinking organized on the topic of call centers and call center technologies, this book is a good place to start. Once point of caution. The book was written in 2004, so some of the information is slightly dated. In my opinion the info that was dated didn't take away from the value of the book.

Lots of useful information, and not too dull. There's a lot of specifics in here about technical call networking, which really isn't useful when you're managing the people rather than the IT.

Probably the best book out there for anyone who needs to understand the evolution and future direction of customer care technology and its ecosystem.

The way Keith Dawson handles the materials is well-written and concise. He does not waste much time going into more than just a couple real-world applications for the technologies he is explaining, but he does set your mind spinning about how they can be used to suit your needs. The information on VoIP and IP Telephony are a little dated and an updated edition would obviously expand a lot on those technologies (which were just emerging when the book was written but have become very popular in the industry now). Not only does he discuss what technologies are available (like AVR, IP-PBX, Recording, Call Queuing, etc.), he goes into a brief discription of the more traditional PBX system, if only to point out their flaws compared to today's newer technology but not failing to point out their merits as well. A good book for someone who is just beginning to integrate themselves in the field and the tech.

Very theoretical. Not much help for daily operations. It's more a strategic book on call center planning. Still was useful on some equipment buying decision.

Buy it only if you are a beginner.

While this is not a big cookbook with lots and lots of recipes like some cookbooks, every recipe in it is one I am looking forward to trying. Don't let the title fool you, you will use many of the cookie and bread recipes all year round.The photography is beautiful and the font is larger than normal, making it easy to actually use while you are cooking. So many cookbooks these days have beautiful photos but the font is light and very small as if the photo is the most important part of each page. I so appreciated this larger than normal font, a nice addition to a beautiful cookbook.

I was so excited to receive this book after ordering it, and I wasn't disappointed one bit! I absolutely enjoyed pouring over every single page! The photographs are beautiful with a charming vintage feel. I was drawn right into it and couldn't put it down! The recipes are all unique and equally delicious with special family recipes noted. Every recipe we have made has turned out amazing! I can't recommend this book more highly, with not only special recipes passed down from their family, but also ideas on the hygge lifestyle. A must have book for everyone who wants to add a special cozy touch to not only your Christmas, but throughout the whole year!

I am so enjoying this unique cookbook! I love the personal touches throughout. The photographs are inviting. The recipes can be made with simple ingredients that you most likely already have in your pantry; but the taste and presentation is exquisite. My daughter has made the ginger cookies several times and has gotten rave reviews from family and friends; they are the best ginger cookies ever!! My son loves to make the popcorn balls. This is a cookbook we will continue to use throughout the year!

Love the simple style the authors used to write the book. Recipes are simple and straightforward. I watched their channel in YouTube and The recipes they shared. Photography is also beautiful. Best of all, you have all the ingredients in your kitchen, no need for a specialty store. I will use the book throughout the year, as good recipes are meant to be baked and enjoyed every day!

I love, love, love this book!! The recipes are simple but intriguing, and magically impressive!! I can make this happen! The sweet nostalgic sentiments of family-treasured recipes are precious. Personally, I love books with photos of each recipe, and these are simply beautiful pictures...I just paged through looking at all the photographs first. By the time I had done that, my son and I were both drooling over the recipes. Can't wait to bake! The suggestions for cozy living delighted me. Abby and Johanna use simple and obtainable objects in the most amazing ways!! I am incorporating these ideas into my holiday for sure. In fact, I plan to use them all year long! Great job, girls! Any ideas for a summertime book?

Nothing much new in this book. Having used a food processor for years, most of the recipes and tips were ho hum. Most recipes do not stand out as something that I want to try. Also, as one reviewer pointed out, many of the recipes are found in other America's Test Kitchen cookbooks. This would be a great introductory book to include with a food processor gift for a new bride. My food processor (the Cuisinart 14 cup) is a work horse in my kitchen; this book would be good for the kitchen where it is underused. Would be a good reference book if you are on the fence about which food processor to purchase. The book itself is very attractive, with beautiful pictures for all recipes. However, I found the small font and light print on the shiny white pages difficult to read when placed in a cookbook stand. Also, it does not stand open on its own. Missing an inclusive Table of Contents, this book is not very user friendly. This small cookbook (75 recipes) is not on par with my other America's Test Kitchen cookbooks, but that is, of course, reflected in the lower price. This cookbook would be a good food processor primer. I'll most likely pass it along to someone who is new in the kitchen.

This book will remedy both issues!I consider myself a very experienced home cook, and my food processor is an invaluable tool in my kitchen. I jumped for joy when I got it! Even now, I still use it a couple times each week, grating huge blocks of cheese in an instant, mixing up pizza dough, making pesto and blending marinades. This book has me excited about my processor all over again, to try these new recipes! Mushroom Bolognese, Vegetable Pot Pie, and Scalloped Potatoes are all similar to things I've made before, so I'm also excited to try some old things in a different easier way.As they often do, included in this are testing results of different machines.Positives:Learning that I actually don't need the dough blade for dough that I've been consideringDifferent techniques and tricks for minimizing clean-up (plastic wrap over the bowl)The tips throughout - some I already knew, some were "a-ha!" moments (processing water with a few drops of soap to clean the bowl? Why didn't I think of this)The recipes! Having tried what seems like a gazillion Test Kitchen recipes and never once having a failure (knock on wood...)...I'm quite confident that my family will looooove the shrimp burgers and even the meatless Black Bean burgers. Bacon Jam? Yes please. Also Celery Root and Potato Roesti sounds divine.It basically expounds on a lot of simple techniques, with some fresh approaches thrown in.The negatives:Some of the processor techniques will be review for any cook who's spent quality time with their processor. I don't really think that's a huge thing...most good cookbooks like to cover the basics like this. Also, if this is your first food processor, this basic info is great!Another small issue I have is that I love a detailed Table of Contents - for a month down the road when I remember a recipe I suddenly want to make, and cannot quite remember where I saw it. It's separated into sections, and the section intro pages each have the recipe list there. A small issue...and one I bump into pretty often. Guess I need to change my expectations in cookbooks. That, or improve my memory...not likely!I have the Cuisinart 14 that they used for all the recipes. It's their top rated machine.

Its a wonderful book, but i wish that they had mentioned the fact that the recipes in it could only be used on the larger food processors that are available on the market, i have not used it yet because of that fact and i am wondering if i should just take a chance and give it a try on my Kitchenaid 9 cup processor, which is the right one for someone who lives alone.

Great book! I was just gifted a 14-cup Cuisinart food processor for my birthday. I love Cook's Illustrated/ATK, so I thought this would be a great resource to have on hand while learning how to use it. And I am happy to report that I was correct. This is a reasonably sized, lightweight volume that is jam-packed with operating tips and great recipes. I have already made three recipes in less than a week, and all of them have been superb. I can't wait to make more, since so many look appealing to me. A quick check revealed that very few of these recipes are available either online or in other Cook's Illustrated/ATK cookbooks. Totally worth the price!

I am actively seeking to learn to cook at a more sophisticated level, so I particularly love this cookbook. Not only is the printing beautiful, so too are the many pictures that accompany each recipe. I particularly liked the format of each recipe which starts with a section entitled "why this recipe works." This is a paragraph or two explaining what the test chefs were trying to accomplish and why they made the decisions they did. This is written in understandable language, not some gourmet speak, and I found it very instructive. Additionally, the basic recipes are accompanied by a couple of decided different variations. This is a very professional cookbook and a great resource for those who have invested in a food processor.

I have learned so much about my food processor, even though I've owned various units since early 80's. While the recipes may be simplistic, I'm using my processor the correct way and it stay out on the counter instead of hiding in the cupboard. Very educational - thanks!

A good read with helpful info even after owing a food processor for over 30 years. Already knew most of the info but will be making a few tweaks in my recipes! EXTREMELY good value! Liked the machine comparison section and what recipes worked in what models.

This is another one of her books, and it is nicely written, easy to read and follow. It goes on to talk about the many different "levels" of creation, but I don't like how some of the terms used in the book are describing things. Like for example, one of the levels is the lower level , where gnomes, faeries, and trolls live, and I didn't like how she called it lower than us, it would just be a different dimension or plane of existence. Anyways, it is a good book.

Most of us probably won't be able to verify if Sylvia Browne's cosmology is correct until we leave our bodies permanently. The research of near-death experiences by physicians Raymond Moody, Melvin Morse (of children) and Elisabeth Kubler Ross provide evidence of survival of the consciousness after clinical death of the body. (The alternate hypothesis that the oxygen-deprived brain provides stimulation does not explain how medically untrained adults and even children can describe in detail resuscitation procedure, even to the point of repeating what specific individuals at the scene said.) However, one could say that the people who come back to their bodies and the Earth with these fascinating stories of what they saw and learned are merely tourists.The descriptions of life after life from Browne and psychic mediums George Anderson, James Van Praagh, Allison DuBois, John Edwards, and others focus on what we can call permanent residents. And the recent book by Depak Chopra, Life After Death: Burden of Proof, provides another physician's view of the non-temporal and the eternal with an Eastern perspective that is complex, but intriguing.There is a growing body of evidence that indicates that all these writings should be studied carefully. I highly recommend all of Browne's books for being accessible. They make a good introduction to the more arcane Chopra.

I enjoyed reading about different realms and beings from these realms. It's more geared towards spiritual practitioners and metaphysicians. It might be a bit too 'out there' if you are new to spirituality. You might want to start with something more simple like 'The Other Side and Back' by the same author.

Sylvia just keeps them coming and after each book I am hungry for more! She has a way of explaining life in a way that connects with my soul, it all just feels so right. This book was a one that I have to read again to get everything out of it but I relish reading it again and again. Sylvias books are NEVER a disappointment! All of her books have filled some kind of void inside me and keep me coming back for more!

I WAS SKEPTICAL ON ANYTHING CONCERNING THE PARANORMAL AND IAM NOT EASILY PERSUADED. WITH THAT SAID I HAVE PURCHASED 3 OF SYLVIA'S BOOKS AND IAM HOOKED.I LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT GIVES A VERY GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE AND WHY WE STRUGGLE WITH CERTAIN ELEMENTS IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE.IT DOES NOT HURT TO OPEN YOUR MIND TO THINGS THAT MAY SEEM UNREAL.I HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS BOOK AND HER OTHER BOOKS HOW TO COPE WITH DIFFICULT SITUATIONS BETTER.LIKE SYLVIA SAYS IF WE ONLY HAVE GOOD TIMES WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THAT AND HOW DO WE ADVANCE SPIRITUALLY IF WE DONT HAVE HARD TIMES SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.OF COURSE WE HAVE SKEPTICS AND THATS FINE TO BE SKEPTICAL BUT BEING CYNICAL IS SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.SKEPTICISM SHOULD NEVER TURN INTO HATE BECAUSE YOU ARE IGNORANT TO OR DONT UNDERSTAND THE BELIEFS OF OTHER PEOPLE AND THATS SOMETHING WE AS PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN. SYLVIA NEVER TRIES TO FORCE ANYONE TO BELIEVE WHAT SHE SAYS. SHE SIMPLY SAYS LET THIS LEAD YOU TO YOUR OWN TRUTH. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK !

This is one of the oddest books I have ever read on UFOs. The Native Americans whom the author interviews, whether Alaskan, Navajo, etc., seem to be completely matter-of-fact about their encounters with UFOs and aliens. If the aliens are caught in a snow storm, give them a lift. If they have a flat tire, change it. If they get lost, help them find their way back. There doesn't seem to be any of the hysteria surrounding UFO encounters found in other cultures. There also doesn't seem to be much of the fear. It is a fascinating book purely from a cultural standpoint.

A no nonsense, unembellished but fascinating look at this subject. The authors's voice is just as charming and measured as the voices of the Indians recounting their stories. The author allows the stories to tell themselves. Because of her great networking skills among the American Indian reservation system she has the luxury of using only the very best encounter stories, and her Indian heritage gave her access to a people notorious for their reticence and privacy. Probably only a blooded indian could have pried thes stories loose from so many different people. There is no need to stretch or enhance anything. This is a no BS zone. The book also gives us an intimate glance into the current reservation scene and the social dynamics. Sixkiller's academic training combined with her very big heart strike the perfect balance between rationaility and intellectual adventure. She genuinely cares for these people, and they all sensed that and opened up for her. I do hope she will tackle some other forteana in the near future. American Indian sasquatch stories would be high on my list.Highly recommended.

I almost didn't buy this,because the title sounded sort of corny. However, after reading the sample, I purchased it, and was glad I did. Very interesting, caught my attention from the start.Many well-researched stores by the author (who is also American Indian) and a different perspective of alleged alien interaction from a unique group of people. I found the stories riveting, powerful, and intriguing.The way American Indian culture treats the visits of Star People is definitely different from that of other groups. Clarke has interviewees from aged people to young people.People who told their stories are not looking for some sort of adulation or attention (many would not give their names because they could have been ostracized, lost their jobs, or made sport of by others). They simply wanted to tell their story in a humble, straight-forward fashion and I found them quite believable overall. Their demeanor and candor in relating these encounters showed them as well-spoken, intelligent, honest, and definitely concerned over possible repercussions to their lives and livelihood if they were exposed as having seen or interacted with "a UFO".There are a couple of stories about possible hybrid Indians (although no DNA tests were done on them) that raised questions to me. These people were not "cross-hybrid Greys" or whatever the term would be for that, but had allegedly descended from a different type of humanoid-appearing alien, long-lived, that passed the longevity on to them, as well as some other genetic traits. IF this was true, then it would appear that the DNA of humans and these "others" must be compatible to an astonishing degree, because the individuals said they were born normally of a human mother, not mixed in a petri-dish/test-tube situation and born in some other way, some other place.It is possible, naturally, that these individuals in question had some type of psychosis and merely BELIEVED they were of alien genetics, but they sounded, (through the testimony Clarke relayed,) sincere. However, anyone with a persistent delusion WOULD sound sincere and believe what they were telling you was the truth. Since DNA doesn't lie, a sample from them would have been the litmus test---so unfortunate one could not have been procured. Kudos to the American Indians interviewed for having the courage and honesty to relay the tales of the "Star People" to Clarke.

I have read all three of Ardy's books. I would rate this the best, followed by "More Encounters..." and then "Sky People". I have read many books and articles on the subject over the years (being an experiencer myself). There are many books out there that have a lot more technical details and names names. There are some who do not like the secrecy of anonymity of the story tellers in this book, which for some may make it harder to believe as "truth", though from personal experience there are many reasons to wish to remain anonymous. One does notice the "yin yang" of the American Indian belief in Star People, where the elders take the Star People as granted, but seemingly the newer generation - though they know of the Elder's tales of Star People, may have had an encounter and thus believe in ETs - their peers seem to take pleasure in teasing them about it and their jobs may be lost if they came out. To me, the best part of this series is the one-on-one style of story telling, like sitting down with some good, close friends and talking about your personal experiences with "Star People".

Those skeptical of the subject of interplanetary visitors of course will resort to their usual tactic, denial. However this book appears to have such an unassailable ring of truth that the skeptics will be hard pressed to say that this book is a total hoax. After all with so many varied anecdotes in this book the question comes down to a black and white situation, did these incidents really happen, or are the author and the interviewees total liars. There is no middle ground. With so many media accounts of UFOs, in print and cable outlets, one who is a doubter has to ask him/herself "are ALL of these accounts a work of fiction of some sort?" For those not in complete denial, this book should put to rest any doubt that we indeed are visited by intelligent beings not of this planet.
