It is ironic that today is the day Protestants like me are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and I am writing a favorable review of a book by a Catholic bishop. There are plenty of venues for Protestants and Catholics to redraw the lines of debate and raise our voices over differences between us in 1517 and in 2017.But we need to often lay down our weapons, huddle together, and seek to find those areas where we are needing to battle from the same trenches against a common enemy.Ours is a secular age. The early Church battled the forces of Greek and Roman paganism. The Reformation was a battle between contesting visions of Christianity and culture. Since the Enlightenment and increasingly after the 19th century, the world confronting Christians is a Secular World. It is significant that there are at least two major studies written by Protestants on the book titled A Secular Age by Catholic philosopher Charles Taylor. What Taylor and his Protestant fans are battling at one level is the same enemy that Father Barron battles. This book, which is being released today (October 31, 2017), is my first introduction to the life and ministry of Robert Barron. The book is largely written by John L. Allen, Jr. who has interviewed Bishop Barron extensively.Since I just received the book a few days ago, my overall assessment is incomplete. But I can speak favorably after reading about a third of it.First, Barron is a trained theologian and scholar (with a focus on Thomas Aquinas and Hans Urs von Balthasar. Yet, his labors are not in the library or among scholars and theologians. Barron's labors and mission is toward communication. He uses his documentary series on Catholicism and Youtube sessions to teach.Second, his is well versed in modern culture. At times in our history, we Christians suffered from a Christianity that took a fundamentalist approach to culture or a monastic view. (I am using/misusing the words "fundamentalist" and "monastic" in restricted and negative ways .) In other words, it was, to borrow from Richard Nieburh, "Christ against culture."Sure enough, there is plenty in modern American culture, society, and entertainment worthy of being scorned and disregarded. But that is not an adequate Christian answer.Barron likes the music of Bob Dylan. He finds rock and roll exhilarating. (I agree with his assessment of Dylan, but prefer older country music to R&R.) He knows and loves movies ranging from old classics like "Ben Hur" to modern more gritty movies like "Gran Torino." He likes baseball.I certainly believe this approach to life is one that I--a Calvinist, a Kuyperian, a Christian teacher--can glean from, borrow, use, and apply. The chapters in this book are on broad topics like truth, goodness, and beauty (a recurring triad of thought in the classical Christian school movement) and then on spiritual activities, such as evangelism, prayer, and the Bible. For those of us who enjoy life in our Protestant and Reformed enclaves, this book is a good chance to see another angle on what we are all trying to do in the name of Jesus Christ.

His Excellency Bishop Barron has been a huge and almost daily influence on my life since I returned to Catholic faith and practice. Bishop Barron's Catholicism Series (in both book and film versions) is indeed a rich display of beauty as well as a revelation of goodness and truth.Veteran journalist John Allen skillfully shares his primary research on the subject of Bishop Robert Barron. Through his multiple films, videos, audios and writings, Bishop Barron has revealed pieces of the themes and building block experiences that have shaped him. For me, John Allen enlarges the story of those themes and experiences in a way that puts it all together and makes it all so much deeper and understandable. Bishop Barron and his Team are great communicators on mission for the great Kingdom Cause of Christ and His Church. Here is further advancement for that mission that a wide audience from skeptics and atheists to Protestants and cradle Catholics can enjoy. May this book indeed advance a spiritual movement that builds more disciples of Jesus Christ and more disciple-makers.

The combination of the reflections of Bishop Barron and the commentary by John Allen works well to present Barron's views on numerous topics related to Church and living the Christian life. The three chapters that focus on Beauty, Truth, and Goodness are very helpful in seeing how these qualities can contribute to making life worth living (with a nod to Bishop Fulton Sheen, another great communicator bishop mentioned in the book). These chapters, indeed, the whole book, help us to see what is at the heart of Barron's thinking. In addition, the chapters on "Evangelization" and "Prayer and the Supernatural" are also excellent, and help readers see what moves Barron in his mission as an educator, administrator, priest and bishop. Other reflections, too, on obstacles to the faith and the Bible are also thought-provoking.Barron's faith shines through this book and does help awaken the mind. This book is light shining in the darkness of the world and even the Church. Barron is pretty clear about it being more than dimness, although he embraces the biblical teaching that the darkness will not overcome the light. There are so many challenges, but Barron reflects much hope. Grace is powerful and this comes through. This is a balanced and encouraging view of the challenges facing Christians and the Church today. We will be reading and discussing this in our Catholic parish book club next month. I will return then to share what the members think of the book.2/24/18--We discussed the book and it received generally positive comments from the book club members. Most found it engaging reading and the focus on Beauty, Truth, and Goodness an introduction to something new for them, and helpful.

I've been following Bishop Barron for last five years starting when I first entered RCIA. His Youtube videos have been instrumental in helping me to understand faith issues specifically around the Catholic faith. This book encompasses many of the topics that Bishop Barrons discusses in his Youtube videos. However this book adds a more personal touch to the topics through the one on one interviews. The book is very well done and is a reminder we all need to be involved in the New Evangelization effort and supporting Bishop Barron's Word on Fire ministry.

I love everything that I have read of Robert Barron's work. He really helps you see today's issues clearly and intelligently. I began to underline passages and realized pretty quick that each page was covered in yellow highlights. I will read this more than once!
