Review

Praise for Babel: “Fascinating . . . Dorren has an eye for what makes languages stand out from the field . . . In the hands of a less gifted author, some of the material in Babel could come across as dry or intimidating. But Dorren (as you might expect) has a way with language, and an arch sense of humor . . . Babel is an endlessly interesting book, and you don’t have to have any linguistic training to enjoy it . . . As joyful as it is educational, and above all, it’s just so much fun to read.”―NPR “A linguist and journalist takes readers on a global tour of the world’s top 20 languages, from Mandarin, English, and Arabic to Swahili, Tamil, and Malay. How did these tongues come to prominence and what others are dying out because of them? Dorren explores the culture and quirks of each language with infectious curiosity.”―Newsday “Eye-opening and thoroughly entertaining . . . [Dorren] is wonderful company: chatty, informative, enthusiastic . . . Babel is a story not of nouns and consonants, but of empires and continents. Language is power. Sometimes it is a matter of life, lust, and death.”―Times (UK) “An accessible and entertaining dive into the most commonly spoken languages in the world . . . An excellent choice if you want to learn another language but can’t decide which one . . . Accessible to longtime language scholars and casual readers alike; a delightful collection of twenty small windows to much larger worlds.”―BookBrowse“Babel―fittingly for a book on language―is about more than numbers. Dorren takes a clever approach . . . He doesn’t just give an overview of the languages discussed; he explores a theme or element in each one, sometimes drawing broader conclusions on language as a whole . . . Smart, punchy prose.”―Irish Independent “Hugely readable . . . Dorren is both an intimidatingly gifted linguist and a wonderfully eloquent writer. You couldn’t wish for a better guide to the wonders of the world’s bewildering array of tongues.”―Mail on Sunday “Dorren expertly unpacks the baffling exceptions and structural oddities of the world’s 20 most-spoken languages in his delightful latest . . . Dorren always succeeds in sharing his delight at the intricacies and compromises of human communication . . . Whether he is debunking common misunderstandings about Chinese characters or detailing the rigid caste distinctions ossified in Javanese, Dorren educates and fascinates. Word nerds of every strain will enjoy this wildly entertaining linguistic study.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Dorren offers an intriguing tasting-menu of the major standardized languages . . . An engaging and informative whirlwind tour of how major world languages are created, used and changed.”―Shelf Awareness “In surveying this score of tongues, Dorren teaches readers a great deal about how languages survive, evolve, and spread . . . As he shifts focus from language chapter to language chapter, Dorren delves into social and political dynamics affecting speech and writing . . . A fascinating foray into global linguistics.”―Booklist “Dorren proves to be a genial, fascinating guide to the modes, manners, and curiosities of the most-spoken languages in the world . . . A deft, spirited exploration of the connection of languages to a nation’s identity and culture.”―Kirkus Reviews “Hugely readable . . . Dorren is both an intimidatingly gifted linguist and a wonderfully eloquent writer. You couldn’t wish for a better guide to the wonders of the world’s bewildering array of tongues.”―Mail on Sunday “Enthralling . . . Full of exciting stories and illuminating history lessons . . . Riveting.”―Big Issue “The multilingual Dorren, who scored with Lingo: Around Europe in Sixty Languages, goes global with this study of language, culture, geography, and history. Some surprising facts: presumed lingua franca English is actually spoken by only one in five people worldwide, more people speak Malay than French, and Turkish has evolved so quickly in the last century that titles from the early 1900s are Greek to today’s speakers.”―Library Journal (PrePub Alert) Praise for Lingo: “[Dorren’s] deep and broad expertise allows him to take a familiar, mostly bemused approach to the linguistic patchwork of Europe . . . as enlightening as it is entertaining.”―Boston Globe “A wonderful read . . . [Dorren’s] lively and insightful book takes the reader on a linguistic tour of Europe. In 60 witty, bite-sized chapters, Dorren makes sense of the babel of voices, exploring the origins of the continent’s languages and dialects and highlighting the surprise commonalities, stark differences and quirky singularities . . . Practically every page comes studded with at least one fascinating fact . . . illuminating and entertaining . . . [A] unique, page-turning book”―Minneapolis Star Tribune “Mr. Dorren’s language tourism takes in not just the familiar monuments of English, French, Spanish, and German but also the unsung marvels of Latvian, Cornish, and Luxembourgish . . . A brisk and breezy tour . . . Bulge[s] with linguistic trivia . . . [Dorren] has an eye for genuinely surprising detail . . . [His] book is a peppy advertisement for the rewards of having several languages in one’s head.”―Wall Street Journal “[A] playful survey of sixty languages spoken in Europe . . . Dorren gives voice to an important linguistic truth: ‘Today’s errors tend to become tomorrow’s correct usage.’”―New Yorker “Lingo features amusing tales from five dozen languages, languages that define the nations of Europe . . . a great example of how language helps us get a little insight into the many cultures of Europe.”―Rick Steves, Travel with Rick Steves “A worldly delight . . . This language writer dazzles. His stylistic flair is more than just entertaining―it crystallizes abstract ideas he conveys through vivid imagery . . . Dorren approaches his subject with passion and humour. His chapters are diverse, each normally highlighting the peculiarities of a single language . . . Dorren’s pace is swift . . . For language tourists, Lingo is a tour de force.”―Winnipeg Free Press “[Dorren’s] linguistic tour is fascinating, funny, surprising, and enlightening.”―Jane Ciabattari, BBC Culture (10 Books to Read in December) “This linguistic-led trip of the tongues across Europe doles out bite-size bon mots about the history, eccentricities and diversity of languages both obvious (German) and obscure (Gagauz). Plus, it’s laugh-out-loud funny―and that’s in all languages.”―American Way (December Picks for the Traveler) “Dorren’s book is so much fun a reader might feel that half of Babel’s curse has already been lifted.”―National Post “Lingo is a charming, well-researched tour of the languages, language families, and linguistic history of Europe . . . While keeping readers entertained, [Dorren] manages to cover not just the usual suspects but also such languages as Sami, Yiddish, Romani, Armenian, Ossetian, Basque, Welsh, Manx, and Esperanto . . . Dorren’s entertaining book is just right for academic consumption and a nice treat for general readers looking for an overview of linguistic Europe.”―CHOICE “[A] fascinating read . . . Covering the idiosyncracies of 50-plus languages, from the spelling of Scots Gaelic to the counting conventions of Breton, Dorren weaves tales of conquest, social mores and isolating landscapes with remarkable ease . . . From Yiddish to Romani to English, the book is entertaining. Now, if only I can remember all these anecdotes for my next party.”―MultiLingual “Wonderful . . . This intriguing, thoughtful book will delight those who love words; it is also a round, solid education in the vastness of the world’s citizens’ ability and desire to express themselves . . . Amusing, too!”―Booklist “In this bubbly linguistic endeavor, journalist and polyglot Dorren covers the evolution and peccadillos of 60 European languages . . . Dorren thoughtfully walks readers through the weird evolution of languages . . . with quirky tidbits aplenty . . . Rounded out with helpful insights such as the impact of Martin Luther . . . and the refutation of the notion that Eskimos have 100 words for snow . . . Dorren has crafted an immersive and illuminating study of something many of us take for granted.”―Publishers Weekly “Dutch linguist and journalist Dorren . . . reveals many intriguing nuggets of information about languages from the familiar (French, German, Spanish) to the arcane (Manx, Ossetian, Sorbian) . . . For linguists and readers truly thrilled by the meticulous study of languages.”―Kirkus Reviews “For language lovers and those who enjoy obscure facts, European culture, and politics―or all of the above―Lingo will be an entertaining book to dip into, a tasting menu of the pleasures of languages.”―Shelf Awareness “A joyful guided tour around Europe’s linguistic landscape . . . genuinely interesting and enormous fun. Particularly impressive is Dorren’s ability to flip with ease from jokes and surprising facts to the discussion of complex linguistic ideas. . . . For the sadly monoglot, Lingo is a wake-up call: a book that brims with joy at linguistic variety and invention, and reminds us what he―and we―are missing.”―Sunday Telegraph (UK) “The depth and breadth of [Dorren’s] understanding and knowledge are awesome . . . this charming, funny and fascinating gem of a book has persuaded me of the richness we are in danger of losing.”―Times (UK) “I can’t praise it enough. If you ever wanted to know how exactly Finnish and Hungarian are related and how Turkish fits in, it is clearly explained here in two to three pages. And so is everything else you ever wanted to learn about European languages but were afraid to ask. Brilliant, witty, excellent!”―Times Higher Education Supplement, Best Books of 2014 “Learned and pleasantly ironic . . . In this entertaining exercise in ‘language tourism,’ the author isn’t frightened of making judgments. . . Impressively, he has taken classes in many of the languages he writes about, as well as in sign language, about which he writes illuminatingly . . . His tour of the continent is a richly diverting exercise, organized into sections on languages and their families, history, politics, writing, vocabulary, grammar and state of endangeredness. He has something interesting to point out about nearly every topic.”―Guardian (UK) “A series of quirky linguistic stories full of etymological pleasures . . . if you believe Umberto Eco, ‘The language of Europe is translation.’ And certainly much of what’s revealing in Lingo is to be found not in the narratives or mechanics of individual languages but in the interface between them. . . . there are many etymological pleasures to be had from this book. . . full of charm and pleasing detail.”―Spectator (UK) “Lingo is not meant to be an encyclopedia but a language ‘amuse-bouche’. Smorgasbord might be a better description: through sixty compelling stories about European linguistics, it tells us an impressive amount about Europe. . . . an entertaining, accessible guide.”―Financial Times (UK) “Full of odd linguistic facts . . . fascinating.”―Times Literary Supplement (UK) “I love this book. It’s witty and informative, with a wealth of engaging comments on all things language-related. . . . Such amusements, along with the book’s mine of information, make this a great seasonal stocking filler―whether you’re a lingophile or not.”―Morning Star (UK) “A new approach to understanding the world . . . ideal for any cunning linguist.”―Wanderlust (UK) “A multitude of dinner-party facts: there’s no such thing as Norwegian (the ‘national tongue’ comprises a collection of regional dialects); that Spaniards utter an average 7.82 syllables a second; and that the last speaker of Dalmatian, in a rare example of a language dying with a bang instead of a whimper, was killed by a land mine.”―Geographical Magazine

Gaston Dorren’s description of various features of the world’s twenty most spoken languages is anything but babbling. Although the book does not have a consistent theme, Dorren blends biographical, historical, and cultural material along with morphological descriptions of languages into something like a delicious cheesecake. There are no earth-shattering theses or discoveries, but the sparkling text and original material make the subject matter interesting, even for non-linguaphiles.For example, one can learn facts as various as the history of the Indian subcontinent and how it shaped Hindi/Urdu/Bengali as well as that Chinese characters are often joined together as syllables to make words. Dorren further explains why Portuguese and not Dutch is one of the world’s major languages and why learning German is so difficult for English speakers—though they were the same language some twelve hundred years ago.Throughout the text is marked by a welcome cosmopolitan approach to cultures and history. Dorren does not fall for the mistake of assuming that European culture has increasingly dominated the world and so the histories of non-European peoples before contact with Westerners are of little interest. Instead, the interaction between Aryans and Dravidians, the spread of Malay and the separation between Japan and China are all discussed. For someone who received a strongly Westernized approach to modern history in school, the lack of an overriding narrative was not fog-inducing but more like fresh air.I wouldn't say that everybody should read this book or that the book contains something that is going to be culturally transformative but if one is looking for something relatively light that still goes beyond pop-culture this is an excellent choice. With the holiday season upon us, Babel is an ideal gift for polyglots or merely just aspiring ones. A pleasant read all around.

My family loves languages and I was excited to find a book on this topic. The statistics about languages in the world are especially interesting and help to provide you with a better perspective on the languages you know, or want to learn. Many of the stories about the individual languages I had never heard before and were fascinating. However, I do think that the author needs a rethink on the way he organized the information. More than a survey on each language, with basic information shared on each one, this book gives you select, interesting facts about each language. Each chapter presents a language and sometimes he tells you about the grammar quirks, sometimes what it's like to learn the language, sometimes the history of the language, and sometimes how the language compares to others. But, there is no consistency from chapter to chapter. I recommend a rewrite using all the information he has, but fleshing out each language fully so you know all of these characteristics of it, and not just selected ones. I wanted to have my 15 year old read the book because she loves languages, but decided not to because of the organization of it.

The first chapter (each chapter covers a language) was quite interesting. The 2nd chapter started to blur into what I'd read in the 1st. I didn't finish the 3rd. Maybe I'm not cut out to be a linguist, lol.

A curious mix of easy to understand / interesting facts and rather laborious academic analyses. Not the light and fascinating read that reviewers indicated. Still, as a person interested in languages I did learn quite a bit. I was disappointed that it addressed mostly spoken language, while I was curious about how they are written.

Good.

The descriptions of the languages were boring and/or difficult to understand.

Books about English language, such as those by John McWhorter and David Crystal are some of my favorites, and I also like the deep dive into other languages, such as the books about French and Spanish by Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoit Nadeau. Then there's the books that dip a toe into many languages, such as this one by Gaston Dorren. Babel looks at the twenty languages that are spoken by the greatest number of people in the world. Dorren starts with some statistics to get you grounded, how many native speakers, where spoken, etc., and then takes off on whatever interests him most about that language. He discusses his difficulties in learning to speak Vietnamese, talks about how Japanese is spoken differently by men and women, looks at the history of the written Turkish language and how politics is inextricably linked to its development. It's just fascinating and it touches on many topics. Even if you aren't interested in 20th century Turkish politics (but you might be surprised to find that it is quite interesting), for instance, you might very well find yourself captivated by the astonishing number of words in English that derive from Arabic.(Thanks to Atlantic Monthly Press and NetGalley for a digital review copy.)

This book should be on every engineering students'desk or shelf. Fantastic book with easy to read language. Given thermodynamics' intricacies nestled in that FUNDAMENTAL CONSERVATION equations may not be derived, this book serves as a great main textbook or a supplement. The copy of the book I received is as described. The previous owner also left his bookmarks in. It is interesting to note, and perhaps obvious that most people focus on certain concepts quite uniformly world over! :)

The first time I learned Thermodynamics was 23 years ago; I recently read this book to help a first time learner of Themodynamics and found this book is far more superb than the book I had many years ago. Perhaps, the compliment does not say anything. I found this book is easy to read; I like authors give outline of the chapter - what will be discuss and why, and ties the current chapter with previous chapters so that, as a reader, I can solidify my understanding. I found this book has all those ingredients. Also the book has a lot of examples. I also like that the author takes effort to divide problems into different categories: the concept questions versus exercises versus challenging problems.Being quite satisfied with the book, I also sympathize with many readers who thinks they don't learn thermodynamics from the book. Thermodynamics is quite a difficult subject to learn; although the author has stressed that he believes in a systematic way to solve thermodynamics problems and he had make effort to include the 'process' of problem solving. I wonder if the author would take a step further to include "active thinking"-- reading a problem students should be thinking of characteristics of the problem. By helping a student who first learn thermodynamics, I realize that students have different approaches to a problem, and some of the approaches are not correct due to violation of the laws. I wonder if the author would want to include "other wrong" or "not preferred" solutions. By contrasting the "right way" and the "wrong way" or "not preferred" can be a great teaching tool.

The book I needed to study thermodynamics. This book has good explanations, example problems with solution and over several problems to pratice on. The tables are well organized...great book for thermo 1 & 2

This book and the one by Moran and Shapiro are the better of the Engineering Thermodynamics textbooks. Actually Moran and Shapiro's is the best. I have also used Cengal. I found it a useful reference.

The book is in great condition considering the price. Nice book for thermo!

Typical college textbook.

This book really explains thermodynamics well. Got me through two thermo courses in college.

I received the book as described. Thank you,

Kindle Unlimited, have read all the Captivating History books out so far, this one, well between knowing some of the history, reading some books as if Tesla had lived/lived in another time {or dimension or whatever} as well as sci-fi of course with him in it, this was more, and most times more is better, so really enjoyed this one, for sure.Explore the Captivating Life of Nikola Tesla Free History BONUS Inside!Obsessive, brilliant, and tortured, Nikola Tesla was lauded for his invention of the alternating current (AC), and other significant contributions to science. His claim that “harnessing the forces of nature was the only worthwhile scientific endeavor" both impressed and enraged the scientific community. Eventually, his peers could no longer dismiss his eccentricities and began to view him as a crackpot — a potentially dangerous one. Although Tesla’s work was a major factor in the success of the second Industrial Revolution, he died alone, impoverished, and largely shunned by the scientific community that once hailed him a genius.Beset by visions, without a wife or children, Nikola Tesla’s brilliant mind changed the world, even though at the time of his death he passed unnoticed into obscurity. Some of the topics covered in this book include: Childhood, Education and Early Career, Patents and Politics, The Eccentric Genius, Tesla’s Coil and the Niagara Contract, Influential Friends and the Lure of Flight, The Wardenclyffe Tower, 1914 and Beyond, And much more!World History: Captivating Stories of Events That Shaped Our Planet (Forgotten History, History of the World, History Books)Winston Churchill: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Winston S. If you are looking for an insightful look at the complex life of Tesla, this is not the book you want. It's written at the level of a high school research paper using tertiary sources that tend to be so disjointed they don't create a picture of the man and his genius. There are much better books about Tesla that you should read. Also about 20 percent is not about Tesla at all. Waste of reading time.

Not much depth to the book and does not give you nearly enough information about a man who was well ahead of his time and something of a genius. Disappointing.

I found the book, both entertaining and informative. I like the fact that it was consice.

thought it would be more interesting have to get better book

Absolutely a great read. I dare to imagine what the world would be like if Nikola Tesla had been given the recognition an funds he so deserved. To learn of such a great man's life is a honor. I wish I was taught this all in school.

I am loving the books. Keep them coming!

Disappointingly short, light on detail, haphazard in structure.

I've referred to this book for many years. It's helped me understand myself and also my family and friends. It's been very insightful. As my grandchildren have been born, I have read their paths to anticipate their unique personalities. This book has helped me be more sensitive to others. Understanding the motivations and challenges of the people around you can make relationships much easier.

This book is so accurate. Mine disappeared and am looking to replace it. It offers great insight into you and others close to you. You meet a new man or woman and want to find out how they are? Get their birthday and look it up in this book. It is HIGHLY accurate!!!!

It is full of GREAT information, but I struggle to find new or different information in this book that is NOT also available online for FREE. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I already read this stuff about myself online.

This book is cool. Learned about my destiny and even if it isn't all true it's cool to play with the idea. But one negative review I did see was it was broad and lacking individual content he said in my own words and I can agree. But yeah I liked the potion and I have also asked others for there birthday to see what the book said about them.

Always on point!

The series are amazing!! Worth every penny. The explanations in the book and how to use are impressive!

I own all three of these books. The writing in Destiny is more thought provoking because of the "Karmic Path" information. Heed the insightful words and watch life improve. Though the positive message and advice may seem disguised, there is much truth to heed in making the most of one's destiny. Are you being all you can, or are meant to, be?

A good reference tool. This comes in very handy when dealing with strange and/or difficult dynamics in Life & Relationships.

Review

BusinessWeek's best innovation book of the year A Fast Company best business book of the year The (London) Times business creativity book of the year "A must read for younger generation managers." -BusinessWeek "Roam shows that even the most analytical right-brainers can work better by thinking visually." -Newsweek "[Roam] shows you how to create simple drawings...that are simple but effective tools in breaking down complex notions and letting you share an idea across cultures and levels of expertise with aplomb." -Fast Company "As painful as it is for any writer to admit, a picture is worth a thousand words. That's why I learned so much from this book. With style and wit, Dan Roam has provided a smart, practical primer on the power of visual thinking." -Daniel H. Pink, author of A Whole New Mind "Inspiring! It teaches you a new way of thinking in a few hours-what more could you ask from a book?" -Dan Heath, author of Made to Stick "This book is a must read for managers and business leaders. Visual thinking frees your mind to solve problems in unique and effective ways." -Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures "If you observe the way people read or listen to things in the early 21st century, you realize that there aren't many of us left with a linear attention span. Visual information is much more interesting than verbal information. So if you want to make a point, do it with images, pictures or graphics...Dan Roam is the first visual consultant for the customer. And the message sticks." -Roger Black, Media design leader, author of Websites That Work "Simplicity. This is Dan Roam's message in The Back of the Napkin. We all dread business meetings with their mountains of documents and the endless bulleted power points. Roam cuts through all that to demonstrate how the use of simple drawings-executed while the audience watches-communicate infinitely better than those complex presentations. Is a picture truly worth a thousand words? Having told us how to communicate with pictures, Roam rounds out his message by explaining that 'We don't show insight-inspiring pictures because it saves a thousand words; we show it because it elicits the thousand words that make the greatest difference.' And that is communication that works." -Bill Yenne, author of Guinness: The 250 Year Quest for the Perfect Pint

I recently read a book (The three value conversations) that outlined approaches to showing people/organisations (your customers) value by creating, elevating and then capturing it. It delved into the world of powerpoint presentations and how we cannot have effective conversations. Our audience essentially takes in the start of the presentation and some part of the end; the middle is essentially forgotten.Back of the Napkin is the "how" and "why" of communicating with your customer, team or prospect. As the title suggests it is a very visual book with many images, acronyms and approaches on how to draw and have a conversation versus death by powerpoint. By traversing through the 6 "W" questions (i.e. What, Who, When, Why, Where and How), Dan Roam provides a stock set of templates on how to visualise this to provide impact in your conversation. Very well worth a read!Three key takeaways from the book:1. People like seeing other people’s pictures. In most presentation situations, audiences respond better to hand-drawn images (however crudely drawn) than to polished graphics; as long as you're credible that is2. Look, see, imagine and show is the four step process to getting visual. You don't need to be a phenomenal drawer because there are templated approaches for any situation3. Visual thinking is where it is at. We need to take advantage of our innate ability to see both with our eyes and our mind's eyes.

Like many books, "Back of the Napkin" seems to have begun with a brilliant very short concept that someone (correctly) thought would sell like hotcakes if padded out into a full-length book. The author really does present significant insights, but the irony is that they would have been best summarized literally on the back of a napkin, rather than dragging them out into full book form. So it reads like a 300-slide PowerPoint presentation advocating brevity. The sequel, "Unfolding the Napkin" (which I also read) is better thought out, serves more as a method, and contains more visual examples - but it still rehashes pretty much the same material as the first book in order to make its point, so reading both books was redundant in my opinion.

I took about a month and a half to convert a PowerPoint presentation into hand-drawn, anthropomorphized illustrations using "Back of the Napkin" (BOTN) tools.Fair amount of work, but wonderful, wonderful insights into how to "say" what I was trying to "say" in my slick PowerPoint slides. The book and tools hold your hand into much greater understanding and appreciation of how people think and receive information - and how thinking through the situation/opportunity/challenge using the BOTN methodology makes things clearer to both presenter and presentee.

This is a book about using graphic illustrations to communicate. It has scores of illustrations, most of them simple, many of them cute, all of them hand-drawn. The author wants to teach us how to use graphics and his copious use of graphics helps make the point. Unfortunately, however, the illustrations are printed in a book format that is too small. The physical size of the printed pages is 6 1/2 x 7 with wide margins whereas a more typical page size (a book grabbed at random from a stack on my desk) is 6 x 9. Everything about this book is too small, including the type font. The difficulty in reading the illustrations, many of which have short words and/or numbers packed into a small area around the graphic elements, distracts greatly from the flow of information. It actually had the effect on me of undermining the core idea of the book, that I should be communicating more through graphics. I propose rule #1 for graphic communications; graphics have to be easy to see and read if they are to have impact. The publisher (Penguin Group) and the author should be ashamed of themselves. The physical format they chose is oxymoronic relative to the subject matter and greatly diminishes the value of this book as a learning tool.

I use the practical tips from the book in my workplace. After I retired, I passed it to a young colleague, telling her this was my secret weapon in career advancement. In my work as content manager and editor, I seldom used PowerPoint; instead I found it quicker and easier to draw visuals on a whiteboard, using thick marker pens of various colours. This kind of visual illustration skill is precisely what the Napkin book teaches.Almost every page is presented with drawings. You can see some random examples that I scanned from the book.

It is ironic that today is the day Protestants like me are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and I am writing a favorable review of a book by a Catholic bishop. There are plenty of venues for Protestants and Catholics to redraw the lines of debate and raise our voices over differences between us in 1517 and in 2017.But we need to often lay down our weapons, huddle together, and seek to find those areas where we are needing to battle from the same trenches against a common enemy.Ours is a secular age. The early Church battled the forces of Greek and Roman paganism. The Reformation was a battle between contesting visions of Christianity and culture. Since the Enlightenment and increasingly after the 19th century, the world confronting Christians is a Secular World. It is significant that there are at least two major studies written by Protestants on the book titled A Secular Age by Catholic philosopher Charles Taylor. What Taylor and his Protestant fans are battling at one level is the same enemy that Father Barron battles. This book, which is being released today (October 31, 2017), is my first introduction to the life and ministry of Robert Barron. The book is largely written by John L. Allen, Jr. who has interviewed Bishop Barron extensively.Since I just received the book a few days ago, my overall assessment is incomplete. But I can speak favorably after reading about a third of it.First, Barron is a trained theologian and scholar (with a focus on Thomas Aquinas and Hans Urs von Balthasar. Yet, his labors are not in the library or among scholars and theologians. Barron's labors and mission is toward communication. He uses his documentary series on Catholicism and Youtube sessions to teach.Second, his is well versed in modern culture. At times in our history, we Christians suffered from a Christianity that took a fundamentalist approach to culture or a monastic view. (I am using/misusing the words "fundamentalist" and "monastic" in restricted and negative ways .) In other words, it was, to borrow from Richard Nieburh, "Christ against culture."Sure enough, there is plenty in modern American culture, society, and entertainment worthy of being scorned and disregarded. But that is not an adequate Christian answer.Barron likes the music of Bob Dylan. He finds rock and roll exhilarating. (I agree with his assessment of Dylan, but prefer older country music to R&R.) He knows and loves movies ranging from old classics like "Ben Hur" to modern more gritty movies like "Gran Torino." He likes baseball.I certainly believe this approach to life is one that I--a Calvinist, a Kuyperian, a Christian teacher--can glean from, borrow, use, and apply. The chapters in this book are on broad topics like truth, goodness, and beauty (a recurring triad of thought in the classical Christian school movement) and then on spiritual activities, such as evangelism, prayer, and the Bible. For those of us who enjoy life in our Protestant and Reformed enclaves, this book is a good chance to see another angle on what we are all trying to do in the name of Jesus Christ.

His Excellency Bishop Barron has been a huge and almost daily influence on my life since I returned to Catholic faith and practice. Bishop Barron's Catholicism Series (in both book and film versions) is indeed a rich display of beauty as well as a revelation of goodness and truth.Veteran journalist John Allen skillfully shares his primary research on the subject of Bishop Robert Barron. Through his multiple films, videos, audios and writings, Bishop Barron has revealed pieces of the themes and building block experiences that have shaped him. For me, John Allen enlarges the story of those themes and experiences in a way that puts it all together and makes it all so much deeper and understandable. Bishop Barron and his Team are great communicators on mission for the great Kingdom Cause of Christ and His Church. Here is further advancement for that mission that a wide audience from skeptics and atheists to Protestants and cradle Catholics can enjoy. May this book indeed advance a spiritual movement that builds more disciples of Jesus Christ and more disciple-makers.

The combination of the reflections of Bishop Barron and the commentary by John Allen works well to present Barron's views on numerous topics related to Church and living the Christian life. The three chapters that focus on Beauty, Truth, and Goodness are very helpful in seeing how these qualities can contribute to making life worth living (with a nod to Bishop Fulton Sheen, another great communicator bishop mentioned in the book). These chapters, indeed, the whole book, help us to see what is at the heart of Barron's thinking. In addition, the chapters on "Evangelization" and "Prayer and the Supernatural" are also excellent, and help readers see what moves Barron in his mission as an educator, administrator, priest and bishop. Other reflections, too, on obstacles to the faith and the Bible are also thought-provoking.Barron's faith shines through this book and does help awaken the mind. This book is light shining in the darkness of the world and even the Church. Barron is pretty clear about it being more than dimness, although he embraces the biblical teaching that the darkness will not overcome the light. There are so many challenges, but Barron reflects much hope. Grace is powerful and this comes through. This is a balanced and encouraging view of the challenges facing Christians and the Church today. We will be reading and discussing this in our Catholic parish book club next month. I will return then to share what the members think of the book.2/24/18--We discussed the book and it received generally positive comments from the book club members. Most found it engaging reading and the focus on Beauty, Truth, and Goodness an introduction to something new for them, and helpful.

I've been following Bishop Barron for last five years starting when I first entered RCIA. His Youtube videos have been instrumental in helping me to understand faith issues specifically around the Catholic faith. This book encompasses many of the topics that Bishop Barrons discusses in his Youtube videos. However this book adds a more personal touch to the topics through the one on one interviews. The book is very well done and is a reminder we all need to be involved in the New Evangelization effort and supporting Bishop Barron's Word on Fire ministry.

I love everything that I have read of Robert Barron's work. He really helps you see today's issues clearly and intelligently. I began to underline passages and realized pretty quick that each page was covered in yellow highlights. I will read this more than once!

Boynton's Greatest Hits Volume 1: Blue Hat, Green Hat; A to Z; Moo, Baa, La La La!; Doggies (Boynton Board Books), by Sandra Boynton

Amazon.com Review

Artist Sandra Boynton has been charming adults for decades with her whimsical, animal-centric greeting cards and her droll sense of humor. When Boynton transferred her weirdly wonderful critters to board books for babies, she made publishing history. These short, hilarious books are perfectly suited to toddler tastes, with their small size, few words, cheerful colors, funny jokes, and silly animals. Blue Hat, Green Hat is all about getting dressed, and stars a very silly turkey who just doesn't get it. (Feet in the hat, pants on the head, etc.) His continuing refrain is "Oops." Moo, Baa, LA LA LA! investigates the sounds animals make, including pigs who sing. Doggies is "a counting and barking book" about the many sounds dogs can make, and A to Z frolics through the alphabet with amusing animal antics from an aardvark admiring to a zebra zigzagging. Parents love Boynton as much as kids do, and these four books in a compact boxed set will no doubt become household favorites! (Baby to age 3) --Marcie Bovetz

These are some of the best board books ever! I got several of them almost 30 years ago for my kid, and I am thrilled I can give them to my grandkid.Great illustration and attractive use of language FTW!

This is a cute little set. My daughter LOVES the "Blue Hat, Green Hat" Blue Hat, Green Hat (Boynton on Board) and the "Moo Baa La La La" Moo Baa La La La books. She wasn't so big on the other two books ("Doggies" and "A to Z"). When I purchased more books for gifts for friends, instead of this set I just purchased the "Blue Hat, Green Hat" and "Moo Baa La La La" books separately instead of buying this set again. I also highly highly recommend the "Hippos Go Berserk!" Hippos Go Berserk! book by Boynton. My daughter LOVES that one the most but it is not included in this set.

We have several Sandra Boynton books and i dislike them. i find that many include messages that seem cruel. In the ABC book, each phrase is 2 words: subject and verb, such as "aardvark admiring" but for the U, the subject is ugly birds and instead of using a verb like unifying, unwinding, uttering, or even "umbrella-jumping" the phrase is "ugly birds being ugly." "Red hat blue hat" seems to be about a member of the group who sucks because he dresses funny, "Hippos go berserk" includes some hippos who show up at a party as servers to cater to the others. I imagine that i am not reading them as the author intended, but how is it okay to use "ugly birds being ugly" - She made a single exception to the pattern (beavers ballooning, cats cleaning) to apparently say that nothing else about these birds matters because they are ugly. "But not the hippopotamus" could be read as a story of how it is okay to make some people feel left out. I know other adults who see the books this way - so how many kids are learning horrible lessons from them? even if those are not the lessons that the author intended-

Package arrived in good condition (one corner of the outer box was a little mashed but not severely) and wrapped in cellophane - perfect for gift-giving! I plan to give these to my niece as an unexpected part to her baby shower gift. I recall hours of enjoyment reading these to my daughter. Hoping she finds as much happiness in reading these over and over again to her daughter.

Sandra Boynton is a favorite author in our home, for our toddler children through beginning school aged. This was a great way to add to our collection for a good price.Of the four books included, the favorite of my brood are "Blue Hat, Green Hat" and "Doggies." Admittedly, my children have expressed these are their favorites from the voices and emphasis that we have come to do with them. Even those these two are the faves, all the books are requested to be read at one point or another. We have never been disappointed with Boynton's works.

We love, love, LOVE the Boynton books! This is our second set to purchase. These were not quite as great as the first ones, but she totally loves them. Well made and great illustrations. Quick reads and awesome for bedtime stories!

Moo Baa La La La was our oldest daughter's favorite book when she a baby and toddler. The edges and corners are worn, but proof of her love. This set was a must for her first born and our first grandchild. We hope she loves Moo Baa La La La as much as her mother did!!

The box sets of Boynton’s books are a great buy depending on the price in compared to buying individually. Blue Hat, Green Hat and Moo Baa LaLaLa are a hit with my son. He laughs at the turkey in Blue Hat, Green Hat and says things like “oh, silly turkey”. It’s cute and funny. The other two books add additional value to the purchase with a counting book and A-Z animal book.

Purchased this for my 2 year old niece for Christmas. Great deal with the number of books you get. Plus it had some of our favorite titles in this set. Great add on gift for any child.
